Act 2- Healing Mistakes
In the depths of the Elderspine, where the light of day barely penetrated. Wulf built a modest home, an outpost far from prying eyes, living amidst the tall trees and whispering winds.
He constructed a shed on the outskirts of his home's view, fashioned from sturdy wood and reinforced with iron, hidden among the dense underbrush. It was both a prison and a sanctuary. As the sun dipped below the horizon, Wulf would retreat inside, the weight of his fierce form crashing against the confines of the wooden walls. Night after night, he would howl at the moon, longing to be free of this curse, yet bound to the beauty that he once cherished.
Years drifted like fallen leaves on a breeze in the sanctuary of the woods. Wulf grew into a strong young man. By day, he was an unassuming craftsman, carving delicate wooden figures by lantern light. But as night fell, his skin would shimmer under the silvery light of the moon, transforming him into a majestic wolf. A creature of grace and power yet shackled by a curse that kept him perched between two worlds. Shadows of yearning grew in Wulf's heart as he longed for companionship, a connection with both the humans he had to distance himself from and the wildness that called to him every night. Just as every night he when he locked himself away, when the moonlight spilled through the shed, Wulf gazed out with yearning eyes, his emotions entwined with both sorrow and desire.
The boy who became a man grew bitter and resentful toward Lunaris, who he felt had abandoned him to this torment. For years Wulf had to grapple with his nocturnal transformation in solitude. As the childhood wonder waned, bitterness grew in its stead. Now an adult, Wulf prowled the night inside his self-made cage, his wolfish form a blend of sinew and shadow, muscle and rage. He loathed the curse, believing that Lunaris had stolen his life. When he caught glimpses of the moonlight, it reminded him of his solitude-the joy that had slipped from his grasp, leaving only anger in its wake.
One starlit evening, as Wulf paced within the confines of his shed, he listened to the night's symphony-the howls of wolves echoing in the distance. His mind, as always, filled with thoughts. "I am cursed," he would whisper to the stillness. And in the silence, amidst the shadows, the moon above shone its gentle luminescence, something he had begun to curse in bitterness from time to time.
He did not, however, expect to get a visitor. A familiar figure emerged before him from the shadows- the moon deity Lunaris, resplendent in their ethereal beauty. They glided through the air, a shimmering, ethereal vision adorned with beams of moonlight that danced around their form like silken threads. "My dear Wulf," they said softly, their voice like starlight undulating with an aura of both beauty and sadness. "Why do you lock yourself away? Is not my blessing a gift?"
For a startled moment, Wulf was in awe at the beautiful deity. Before remembering his pain and how it started. Wulf whirled on the deity, his eyes blazing with a mix of anger and desperation. "A gift!? It's a curse, not a gift! I lost everything to your so-called blessing." As Wulf stood, a sinewy wolf cloaked in an aura of pent-up rage, he snarled, "You cursed me into a nightly beast!" With fur bristling and eyes aglow, he glared at the deity. "Why have you returned?" he spat, bitterness lacing his words.
The moon deity was shocked at the outburst and weakly spoke with a symphony of silver tones echoing through the trees. "I do not understand. This is not a curse, dear Wulf, but a blessing. You are neither man nor beast, but a bridge between two worlds," Lunaris replied, as if hurt. "Beloved one, I left to gather my strength, and I return to see you've suffered alone. Allow me to understand. Let me show you the beauty of what you are."
Wulf hesitated, the bitterness in his heart conflicted by the glowing entity before him. Though he wanted to reject their presence, a flicker of curiosity tugged at the edges of his anger. "Beauty? I'm a cursed being by your hand!"
"Come, let me show you," Lunaris weakly offered again, extending a delicate hand as if to bridge the chasm of misunderstanding.
Though resentment simmered in Wulf's heart, the allure of Lunaris's radiant form glowing essence undulated with concern, revealing a depth of understanding that softened Wulf's ire. Reluctantly, Wulf let himself be led by Lunaris, though mostly because the deity truly looked hurt by his pain. Despite his rage, Lunaris was too beautiful to look this hurt. So, he allowed them to guide him through the wonders of the night.
Wulf began to see the beauty in his nightly existence once more. Lunaris guided him through the forests, teaching him to revel in the sensations of the night-the rustle of leaves, the sparkling dew on the grass, and the thrill of running as an embodiment of nature itself. The simple pleasures like the glow of fireflies, the murmur of the brook, the soft glow of starlit skies and the reflection of the night sky within still water.
"Listen, Wulf. Really listen. What do you hear?"
Wulf's ears twitched, his golden eyes, usually filled with resentment, narrowed in concentration. He'd been so consumed by the curse for so long, he'd forgotten to simply... listen. "...Leaves. Rustling. The wind, I suppose."
"More than that. Feel the symphony of the forest. The whisper of the leaves, each one distinct, rustling against its neighbor. It's a language, Wulf, spoken only in the dark." lunaris would chuckle caressing a tree leaves as the moon shone such soft lights.
They turn to lead on before stopping by a patch of grass dusted with dew. The moonlight caught each tiny droplet, turning the meadow floor into a field of scattered diamonds. "And these... look, Wulf. The dew."
Wulf lowered his head, sniffing cautiously at the dew-laden blades. He'd mostly ignored such trivialities before, his senses focused solely on survival, on the hunt. " ...Wet. Cold." he growls.
They chuckle, a sound like the tinkling of stars. "And beautiful. See how the moonlight catches each drop? Like tiny stars themselves, clinging to the earth. Beauty is in the details, Wulf, even in the simplest things. Especially in the night."
They began to walk again, and Wulf, intrigued despite himself, followed.
Each night, Lunaris guided Wulf deeper into the wonder of his form. They ran through sprawling meadows, leaping over streams that sparkled as if the stars had spilled into the waters. Together, they wove through silver-lit meadows, climbing hills that kissed the sky and diving into lush valleys. They explored the depths of the forest, chasing fireflies and the whispers of the wind. All the while Lunaris laughed, a sound like the tinkling of stars.
With each passing moment, Wulf felt the bitterness within him fade. They danced together amid the shadows with every leap over the silver-sprinkled fields, the cool breeze ruffling through his fur, leaping over babbling brooks, with the charges of excitement echoing in every leap. Wulf found a flicker of joy that had lain dormant within him since he was a carefree boy.
Fireflies blinked and danced in a silent ballet. "Ah, look! The spirits of the forest come out to play."
Wulf watched the fireflies, their tiny lights flickering on and off. He'd seen them before, of course, countless times. But tonight, with Lunaris's guidance, they seemed different. Less like insects, more like... magic.
"They glow... like fallen stars."
"Precisely! And listen..." they gesture towards a gentle murmur nearby. They approached a small brook, its water reflecting the starlit sky above. "The brook sings its lullaby to the night. Hear its gentle rhythm, Wulf. It soothes the earth itself."
Wulf listened, really listened. The rushing water was no longer just an obstacle to cross, but a melody, a soft, constant whisper in the darkness. He lowered his head to drink, and as he did, he saw the reflection of the night sky gazing back at him from the still surface.
"It's... the stars... in the water."
"The night sky embraces the earth, Wulf. Everything is connected, interwoven. You are a part of this, a vital thread in the night's tapestry."
They started to run, effortlessly gliding through the meadow, their silver light illuminating the path ahead. "Come, Wulf!" Lunaris called out, their voice lilting, filled with warmth. "Let the stars guide us tonight! Let the night flow through you!"
He reveled in the freedom of the night and the exhilaration of the hunt, the wind against his fur, the stealthy grace of the night hunters, the wild symphony of the nocturnal world, the thrill of the chase igniting a primal fire within him.
Wulf hesitated for a moment, then pushed off with his powerful legs, joining her run. The wind rushed through his fur, cool and exhilarating. He leaped over the burbling brook; the splash, sending droplets of starlight into the air. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, a feeling other than bitterness stirred within him. It was... exhilaration. Joy.
Wulf, once embittered, began to laugh as the moon showed wonders to him.
Time passed and Wulf found himself welcoming the transformation-not just for the freedom of running as a wolf, but for the chance to engage with Lunaris in this vibrant world.
Wulf began to open up to Lunaris as one would to a close friend. Finding a joy in the deity's reactions.
"So, you see, Lunaris, it wasn't always grand battles and cosmic alignments. Much of my time, while living amongst the humans, was spent in... simplicity."
Lunaris voice was a soft chime, "Simplicity? You speak of a world of mortals, beings so fleeting, so...limited. What grand purpose could be found in simplicity?"
Wulf only chuckles softly. "Purpose isn't always grand, Lunaris. Sometimes, it's in the small things. The warmth of the sun on your skin, the taste of freshly baked bread, the sound of children laughing. The peace of a full moon... These are things you wouldn't find here, in the celestial expanse."
Lunaris shimmering form brightens slightly. "Laughter... I do not comprehend its appeal. To express joy with strange sounds..."
Wulf snickers. "It's a release, Lunaris. A way to express joy, to share a moment of happiness with others. Think of a wave of energy rippling outwards, touching and uplifting everything it encounters."
"And you experienced this...joy? This laughter?"
A wistful look comes to his eyes. "Oh, yes. I remember one summer evening, mother and I were having a little picnic by the forest. I was attempting to fly a kite, and it kept crashing into the ground. Everyone was howling with laughter, even me, despite my frustration. It was... infectious."
Lunaris form flickers. "Infections are typically undesirable."
Wulf couldn't stop his laugh. "Not this one! This one spread joy, connection. That's another thing the mortal realm excels at - connection. They form these intricate bonds, these... tethers, that hold them together through thick and thin. They call them family, friends, lovers."
A ripple passes through Lunaris form, like a star shifting position. "Tethers? Bonds that limit...constrain?"
"Sometimes. But they also provide support, strength, and comfort. Think of a net, Lunaris. Each strand is fragile on its own, but when woven together, they can hold immense weight."
Lunaris was quiet. Then a low hum. "You speak of...sorrow as well. Do these ,"tethers" prevent sorrow?"
"Well... No. Sorrow is as much a part of the mortal experience as joy. There's loss, heartbreak, disappointment. But even in the face of sorrow, those bonds I mentioned often offer solace. They remind you that you're not alone."
Lunaris shimmer intensifies, almost painful to look at. "Such fragile beings, vulnerable to such intense emotions... it is a wonder to have such diverse reasons without much sense."
Wulf Looks directly at Lunaris, their eyes filled with sincerity. "Because Lunaris, it's a life worth living. Imperfect, messy, and fleeting, yes, but also vibrant, meaningful, and full of love... And I... I dream of showing it to you."
"Show me... human life?"
"Yes. I want you to see firsthand the beauty and resilience of humanity, even in its flaws."
Lunaris shimmer softens, becoming a gentle glow. "I have not let myself lower to a mortal's strange understanding. Last I have done, I only learned you are strange little creatures."
"I only want to share a piece of my heart with you, a piece of the world that shaped me. Would you... consider it?"
That fateful night, the night sky flickered with hints of dawn as Wulf had convinced Lunaris to visit his home. For the first time, the deity stepped inside a mortal dwelling. He observed Lunaris-hypnotized by their beauty as they examined everyday objects with childlike wonder. Watching the celestial being curiously navigating his small dwelling was an experience rich with joy. Lunaris, wide-eyed in fascination as Wulf introduced them to simple pleasures.
Lunaris standing in the center of Wulf's cabin, bathed in soft sunlight, beginning to filter through the window. Their eyes are wide as they remained in the homes shadows, fixed on a simple earthenware pot filled with wildflowers.
"What... is this? It holds captured stars, flowers from the fields and trees..."
Wulf chuckles softly at that. "mortals like flowers so much we bring them indoors to look lovely and freshen a home's scent. I picked them this morning."
confused lunaris reaches out a delicate finger to gently touch a petal. "Why do you keep such fleeting things?"
Standing beside them, Wulf smiles. "Because they're beautiful. And because their beauty reminds me to appreciate the moment. Life's fleeting, Lunaris. Everything changes."
Lunaris Tilts their head, considering. "Change is constant in the cosmos. Stars are born, they burn, they die. But... that's on a scale of millennia. You see this... fading, within a day?"
"That's right. It's like a bittersweet reminder of life."
Lunaris then examines a wooden table, running their hands over its smooth top. "This... is carved. With intention. Each curve... purposeful."
Wulf chuckles. "It's just a table, Lunaris. I carved it myself."
Lunaris Looks up, meeting Wulf's eyes. "But it holds your essence. What you create... it carries a part of you. The stars, the planets... they simply are. They do not... intend.
"Maybe that's what makes us different. Maybe that's what makes our lives so precious. We get to choose what we create, what we leave behind."
Wulf felt thrills sharing the wonders of a human's life with Lunaris, teaching them the intricacies of the mortal realm - a world filled with warmth, laughter, imperfections, and the unbreakable bonds that tethered human hearts. Lunaris gazed in awe as Wulf recounted tales of his life, of mundane joys, and of heart-wrenching sorrows. Their shimmering form would glimmer like the night sky itself as Wulf shared his dreams and fears and even expressed a desire to show Lunaris the world of mortals.
Lunaris was both bewildered and delighted by the mundane pleasures that filled Wulf's world. As they visited more.
The scent of wood smoke and stew hung in the air, a comforting aroma that filled Wulf's small cottage. Lunaris, radiant even in the dim light, watched Wulf carefully carve a piece of wood with practiced hands in the safety of the darkened house with all windows blocked off to give more shade.
"You do this... every evening? After a day of... well, what do you do all day, Wulf?"
Wulf chuckles, not looking up. "Hard work, Lunaris. Tending the fields, mending fences. helping who lives close to me."
"The... usual. And this... carving. Why?"
"Keeps my hands busy. Keeps my mind at peace. And maybe, one day, I'll carve something beautiful enough to trade for a loaf of bread... or to give to you."
Wulf finally looked up, a wry smile playing on his lips. Lunaris found themselves captivated by the genuine warmth in the mortal's eyes.
"You create beauty in the mundane. A loaf of bread... it seems such a small reward for such focused creation."
Wulf shrugs but was smiling softly. "It feeds the belly, Lunaris. And when the belly's full, there's room for other things. For seeing the beauty, like you said."
They sat in silence for a moment, Lunaris meticulously observing how Wulf used his hands to tear off a piece of bread, how he savored the simple flavor of the stew that seemed cool enough to eat now.
"Tell me, Wulf. What do you see when you look at the world?"
Wulf had to pause, thoughtfully chewing. "Lots of things. Struggle, for sure. Hardship. But also... strength. And kindness. Folks helping each other out, even when they barely have enough for themselves. Sunrises, rain on the fields, the laughter of children..."
"... Imperfect, though. All of it. Fading, decaying."
"Aye, it is. But that's what makes it precious, don't you think? Knowing it won't last forever. Makes you appreciate the good bits all the more."
Lunaris glow dimmed. "I don't understand. I have seen entire civilizations rise and fall, star systems born and extinguished. Impermanence is... expected."
Wulf leans back in his chair, the firelight dancing in his eyes. "But did you feel it? Did you feel the joy of the harvest, the grief of a lost friend? Did you feel it down in your bones, knowing that this is all you have, all you'll ever have?"
Lunaris was silent, his gaze distant, lost in contemplation. The deity, accustomed to the grand sweep of eternity, was struggling to grasp the profound simplicity of mortal existence.
"No. I... I don't think I did. Not until now."
Wulf smiles gently. "Well, then, Lunaris, you've come to the right place. There's a lifetime of feeling to be done right here, in this small cottage, sharing a loaf of bread. And maybe, just maybe, you'll finally understand why these imperfections... they're not flaws, Lunaris. They're what makes life beautiful."
As the nights rolled on, and under the celestial watch, Wulf's isolation turned into companionship. They roamed the woods together, Lunaris teaching him to appreciate the essence of nature and his newfound form. The playful spirit of the lunar deity infused life into Wulf's existence, making his heart pound with joy.
It was during these nightly adventures that Wulf began to discover an unexpected passion-one that simmered beneath his furry exterior, fierce and wild. He gazed upon Lunaris, admiring not just their otherworldly beauty but the sheer power they exuded. Their glowing skin appeared to shift like the sea of stars above; their laughter stirred something deep inside Wulf.
Wulf relised With Lunaris at his side, he transformed his bitterness into a fierce loyalty, an unusual bond blossoming between the beast and the deity.
Wulf's unwavering adoration showed in the way he would throw his head back in a wolf's howl, imbuing each note with emotion that resonated deep within their very essence. The way he danced in his wolf form in ways that were graceful and lovely to the deity's eyes.
Lunaris, for their part, noticed the burning passion in Wulf's eyes. Despite their inherent detachment from human emotion, they found a strange allure in his unwavering gaze, a vanity they had never acknowledged. His devotion, his unwavering adoration. They had seen many mortals, subjected to their reverence in the long past, but none had ever desired them so singularly, so intensely. It was intoxicating, a balm to their lingering insecurities.
Lunaris cared for him. But a tremor of unease that gnawed at their luminous heart as they knew they couldn't remain. One twilight, Lunaris confided in Wulf, their voice trembling with uncertainty about the impending confrontation with their sibling, Solaris, the sun god. "I must prove my worth to regain my powers," they confessed, their voice laced with uncertainty.
Lunaris began to tell Wulf of their past. And how they ended up sealed away.
