Chapter Two~3rd POV
Percy and Annabeth drove to Percy's mother's apartment after treating the Seven to a fancy dinner in the city.
With two hands on the wheel, at ten and two, Percy turned his head to smile at his beautiful girlfriend. She returned the smile with one of her own. "Keep your eyes on the road Seaweed Brain," she laughed.
He loved her laugh. He thought it was a sound purer than anything Apollo or the Muses could ever make.
Annabeth was playing a game on her IPhone, occasionally stealing a glance at her boyfriend who was singing along to the radio.
She didn't see the truck barreling down the street straight towards them. Neither did Percy. Not until it was too late, at least.
His hands shook on the wheel. He could see the driver. He was so close. So close to collision. The driver was quite obviously drunk. Percy's eyes widened and he gave a shout of warning as the events seemed to play out in slow motion.
He could hear the screech of metal, see how the hood of the car compacted like an accordion.
Percy's arm went out to protect a startled Annabeth who still clutched her phone in her hands.
Percy only had a split second. A split second to save a life. Off went the seatbelt as he threw himself in front of Annabeth as the car compacted and the windshield shattered.
One minute Annabeth was enjoying a nice car ride with her boyfriend and the next their car is a wreck. Her ears are ringing and she doesn't know what's going on. She can't make much sense if anything.
She's got that metallic taste in her mouth, blood. That's what she smells too. That and smoke and Metal. Her head hurts.
She lays like that for a while, a heavy weight on her chest, though she doesn't know what it is. She drifts off for about two minutes before she decides she should probably do something.
Was she alone when this all happened? Or was someone with her. "Percy..." she moaned. Her head was drowning in fog. What was going on exactly?
She tried to gather her senses and look around. It was dark except for the city lights outside the car. The truck in front of her was mostly intact, though the driver was slumped unconscious in the front seat.
The front of the truck was badly damaged she could tell. Now for her more immediate surroundings. This thing on her chest. Ugh, hair in her mouth. Wait. That wasn't her hair.
Her body tingled. Feeling started to return to her. Pain registered first. Then the body lying on top of her. She gasped. "Percy!"
He didn't respond. Didn't move. Just layer their limp. She started to cry. How fast the world can change. "Help!" She called. Her voice was hoarse, hardly voluble. She didn't know what to do. She should dial 911.
Miraculously, her phone was still in her hand. With a shaky hand she typed her password. She almost dropped the phone. Her other arm was pinned under her unresponsive boyfriend.
She opened the call app. The last call she made was Piper so she decided to click on it. She needed help and she didn't know how much longer she could hold onto consciousness.
She pressed on the name. She phone rang for a frustrating ten seconds before her friend picked up. "Hello?" Piper asked, a smile evident in her voice. Annabeth couldn't answer. She couldn't seem to form words.
"Sorry, what?" Piper asked.
Annabeth was trembling so badly. She must be going into shock. "P-Piper?" She asked in a meek voice.
