Chapter Three~Piper's POV
I laughed along with my friends. Leo was just finishing his speech on the perks of Bluetooth sandwiches when my phone rang. I didn't bother to get up and just checked the caller ID.
It was Annabeth. Wonder what she needs. They only just left a couple minutes ago. Leo made a face at me and I laughed before picking up the phone. "Hello?" I asked. There was heavy breathing on the other end. She didn't say anything. "Sorry, what?" I asked. Jason gave me a puzzled look, still smiling. I waved him off.
And then she spoke and the smile was melted right off my face. "P-Piper?" She asked, her voice quivering. "What is it? What happened?" I asked, standing abruptly and startling everyone at the table. No one was laughing now as they strained to hear the conversation.
"Piper, help. There-there was a-a crash. Right outside of the New York Bank. I-I don't know what to do..." she trailed off in despair.
"Annabeth, talk to me. You got in a crash? Outside the bank? Have you called 911? Where's Percy?"
Everyone was looking at me with a mix of horror and confusion. We were all standing now, attracting the attention of everyone else in the restaurant.
"What's going on?" Jason asked. I held up a hand to quiet him, hanging on to every last word out of my friend's mouth.
"H-he's not responding. He shielded me from the wreck. He took the brunt of the impact. I-I can't... Piper I don't know what to do."
A tear escaped my eye and I wiped it away just as fast. I blew out a breath and raked my fingers through my hair. "We're coming. Hang in there. I'm putting Hazel on the phone. Keep talking to her and don't hang up."
I shoved the phone at Hazel who had no idea what the heck was going on and I wrestled Jason's phone out of his hand. I dialed 911 and ran out to the car and climbed in the driver's seat. Jason hopped into the passenger's side and Hazel, Frank and Leo dashed go the back seat.
I pulled out of the parking lot with the phone between my face and my shoulder.
"Hello, this is 911, what is your emergency?"
"My friends got in a crash outside of the New York Bank. From what I heard, it's not good. They need an ambulance. Please hurry." I begged.
The operator made me promise to stay on the line as they sent help. "Jason take the phone!" I yelled. He grabbed his phone back and answered some questions while I drove.
I could hear Hazel in the backseat trying to keep her voice calm and measured, but I'm an expert at reading emotions and I could easily pick out the tremble in her voice.
Leo was leaning close to Hazel and the phone and giving us a report on what was happening while Hazel focused on calming Annabeth.
"She's whimpering. Says her head hurts. Percy..." his voice cracked. "Percy won't wake up." Leo reported.
I took a deep breath and powered forward, my knuckles white on the steering wheel.
Frank groaned and put his head in his hands.
There was too much noise in the car. Too much commotion. Jason talking to the woman on the other end of the phone, Hazel soothing a distressed Annabeth, Leo reporting on the phone call, and Frank groaning.
And on top of that, the sirens. I turned into the street of the bank and gasped. I slammed on the brakes and we skidded sideways. "We're here." Hazel whispered to Annabeth.
I threw the door open and ran to the wreck, my friends right behind me.
