SABINE DIDN'T CARE MUCH FOR THE NEWS. She spent her time writing and exploring, she didn't particularly like going out or working. But she loved to people watch. Hang back at a diner and listen to the various conversations, get a glimpse into the lives of the humans around her. It entertained her, it gave her inspiration for a story. It was the only thing around her that was remotely fun.
Especially lately, the rail workers strike and it's effects on the economy making most of Canada pretty boring and sad. She didn't know why they didn't just move again, but they hadn't been there all that long, and they're newfound member was still settling in.
Sabine didn't know how she felt about the new girl just yet — a perky brunette called Alice who could see the future, and apparently saw herself joining their coven long before she actually did. It helped them out a bit, since she started practicing vegetarianism in preparation, but it also creeped them out that she had these visions. At least, it did for herself and Rosalie. Emmett seemed indifferent, and Edward could see her visions when he read her mind, so he wasn't at all wary.
Sabine had been nice to Alice, of course, but she didn't see her family all that much. When she wasn't writing her stories, or looking for inspiration, she was with Dale.
Ah, Dale. The love of her life. A tall, dark and handsome nomad she had met in Denali a few years back. The attraction was immediate, and reciprocated. They spent all their time with each other — and Dale often questioned why he couldn't just join their coven.
But it wasn't as easy as just joining. There had to be a reason — Edward was changed because Carlisle needed more than just himself to start a coven (and the fact that he was dying), and then Esme was changed because she was the love of Carlisle's life. Sabine was different; the circumstances of her changing, that is. But she joined the coven because Edward was her brother, and she wasn't going to leave his side. Carlisle changed Rosalie in hopes of her mating with Edward, but when that didn't work out, she found Emmett and he joined their family. Alice predicted herself joining their coven, and Carlisle couldn't exactly argue with her logic. But there wasn't any particular reason that Dale should become a Cullen.
Sure, he was dating Sabine. And she loved him, yes. But when she looked at Rose and Emmett, or Esme and Carlisle, she really saw their connection. She felt it. With Dale? Not so much. Plus, Edward sort of hated him.
With that in mind, Sabine rarely told her family when she was off to see Dale. They knew, of course, but she liked to avoid Rosalie's eye roll and mention of how she could do better. Hence why the only person who knew where she currently was was Alice, but Sabine didn't even know that she knew until she was bursting through the door.
She jumped, swivelling around in her chair to face the brunette who had appeared in the office she sat in. It was an old office at the newspaper building that they didn't use — they never noticed when she was there, since her steps were light as a feather — and she went there most days to write and clear her head without Edward giving his two cents. Nobody was supposed to know where it was, but she supposed the future-seeing thing defeated that.
"Alice?" She asked, confused as all hell.
"Sabine!" She grinned, "You'll never believe what I just saw!"
Sabine raised a brow, "What?"
"He's coming!"
"Who is?"
"Your mate!" Alice was practically bouncing off the walls, "He's coming!"
"Dale?" She asked, even though she had an inkling that Alice wasn't talking about Dale.
"I'm not talking about Dale," See? "I'm talking about your actual mate. Your soulmate! I saw him, he's on his way here, and you will meet him in the winter."
Sabine paused, not knowing what to say. Deep down, she knew that her and Dale weren't meant to be, but she loved him too much to admit it. But now? She was being forced to admit it, because her real soulmate was on his way.
"He's so your type, Sab." She grinned, perching herself on a filing cabinet, "He's blonde, mysterious. He's from Texas. He'a called Jasper, I think."
"Oh."
"But I feel like he's going to take Rose's name rather than Carlisle's because they look more alike, so he'll be Jasper Hale. Doesn't that sound amazing?"
"Right." Sabine nodded, eyes unfocused. She wasn't listening.
"We have to tell everyone!"
"No!" She stood suddenly, hand out and eyes wide. Alice screwed up her face, "We can't. Not...yet. Not until I tell Dale. Please?"
Alice nodded, "Okay, fine."
And thus began the worst two weeks of Sabine's existence. Keeping her mind guarded from Edward was hard, but keeping Alice's thoughts down were even harder. But she stuck to her promise, and all of them were none the wiser to what the future would hold. Until she told Dale, at least. She needed to get that out of the way before she told anyone else.
She met him in their usual spot — a cliff edge overlooking the snowy northern mountains where they had their privacy. She was waiting for him when he arrived, his figure breaking through the trees. She didn't look back until he said her name.
"Sabine." She could hear his grin, "Honey. Come on, show me that pretty face."
She turned, and met his wide grin. Dale was loud, brunette and from California. Nothing like Jasper Hale. She didn't know how she was going to break this news, but she needed to say it, because his grin was fading and he looked concerned.
"Are you okay?" He stepped towards her, but she held out a hand and stopped him, "What's wrong?"
She avoided his eyes, and forced herself to speak, "You remember my sister, Alice?"
"Right." He nodded, "The one who sees the future."
"Yes." She replied, "Well — Dale, she saw something. Someone."
"Who?"
"Jasper Hale." She sounded out, mostly to herself but he heard it and made a face.
"Who the hell is Jasper Hale?" He asked, attitude laced in his tone. "Sabine?"
"He's — He's my...mate." She finally looked at him then, anxious for his reaction, "He's my soulmate, Dale. And he's coming."
"What — what do you mean? Like, how does she even know that?" He asked her sharply, brows tugged together in anger. His eyes were darkening, she noticed.
Sabine shrugged, "She knows a lot of things before we do. But she wouldn't lie, not about that."
"So," He shook his head, glaring at her, "So what? You're leaving me? For someone who isn't even here yet? Who might be your soulmate?"
"He is, Dale." She spoke softly, trying to calm down his rising voice, "He is. I — It's not like we have any control over that sort of thing. But it's happening now, and he's on his way—"
"You don't even know him!" He shouted suddenly, speeding so close to her that their noses were practically touching, "You don't even know him and you're leaving me for him?"
"Dale, he's my — "
"Bullshit!" She flinched. Dale shook his head, stepping back, "No. No. I'm not gonna let this guy just waltz in and take you from me without any effort."
"Dale — "
"Sabine, don't." He shoved a finger in his face, "This guy is not your soulmate, I am. If you wanna test that theory, go ahead. It won't be long before you're crawling back to me."
"And if I'm not?" She questioned harshly.
"Then I'll kill him." He said darkly, "I'll rip him apart and burn the pieces. No matter where you run to. I'll find him."
She stood there in stunned silence, for a long time after Dale disappeared. And in that moment, she vowed that no matter how much she wanted to, Jasper Hale would never know that they were soulmates.
Then he would be safe.
