chapter two

My eyes fluttered open to reveal the light of the early morning. I lifted my head, but immediately regretted it. My head was still pounding from last night, also my eyes were sore, my throat was dry and my body ached.

I groaned as I turned onto my side, looking forward at my bay window.

That's when I realized that I was in my bedroom and it was still spotless as it was when I left to go to dinner last night.

Last night...

My thoughts immediately started replaying the event at dinner last night. How my father kicked Dobby when he was only doing his job, how he used an unforgivable curse on me without a hit of guilt or regret, and how I should have known that my father wasn't going to change.

I never regret standing up for Dobby or saying things that I know are right. But I always expanded that my father or the rest of my family would somehow change in one second, see my side of the story, see why I do the things I do.

But every book that I've read has taught me that people change with time and it can't happen in a moment.

As I thought about all those things, I guess that most of my life is based on hope that things can be different.

My thoughts continued to wander as I lay looking out into the early dawn. After yesterday's dangerous storm, the sky was still filled with clouds but at least the sun was still shining behind them.

After a couple minutes of laying in my bed, I finally got the urge to get started with the day even though I knew that no one was probably awake at this hour.

I straightened myself, stretching out my sore body before I threw off the sheets and put my bare feet onto the icy cold floor.

Goosebumps appeared all over my arms and I shook off the cold feeling.

I got onto my feet and walked over to my bay window. The book that I was reading yesterday was still sitting in the same place and I started to get the urge to read which was a normal feeling.

Suddenly, the door opened and I jumped out of my skin.

I looked around, no one was there but then my eyes traveled to the floor and to my surprise, it was Dobby.

Everytime I looked at Dobby, it made me a little upset. He was very skinny and he wore a very dirty pillow-case as clothes. He has big sad eyes with a pencil-like nose, and he was also very short.

"Oh you're awake," Dobby says, he was holding a small roll of bread in his tethered hands. "I didn't expect you to be up this early, Miss. Malfoy."

"Dobby, for the last time," I scolded, "You can call Lilith or even Lili, I don't care."

"Ok, Miss. Lilith," Dobby stuttered, not meeting my eyes.

"What's wrong Dobby?" I asked, crouching onto my knees so I was level with him, "Did my father do something to you?"

Dobby shook his head fast, "No... no, Miss. Lilith."

"Then why are you so nervous?"

"Dobby doesn't like how you were treated," Dobby stammered, still looking at the floor, "Dobby doesn't need protection from you, Miss. Lilith."

"Dobby," I tell him in a small voice, "It was my choice to protect you. What my father was doing was wrong."

"Dobby doesn't need protection," Dobby whispers under his breath.

I rolled my eyes, "Still not your choice, it's mine and I will always choose to help you."

That's when Dobby finally looked at me and he smiled lightly.

"Oh!" Dobby says suddenly, remembering the bread that was in his heads, "I brought this for you."

Dobby handed me the small bread roll and it made my stomach rumble. I didn't release how hungry I was, I don't remember being very hungry last night but now I could eat a feast.

"Dobby, you know what would happen if someone saw you..."

"Dobby knows," Dobby tells me, still slightly smiling, "But Dobby thought you might need food."

"Well that is very kind of you, Dobby," I say as I take a small bit of the hard but still very tasty bread, "Thank you."

"Dobby is happy to be of service."

I rolled my eyes as I broke off a chunk of bread and put it in his very small hands.

After Dobby finished eating his bread a lot quicker than me, I was guessing that Dobby was more starving than I was.

Dobby left after that because he had some work to do for my father then I was back to being alone with my thoughts again.

I walked back over to my bay window and took a seat. I opened up my book and found the page that I left off on.

It only took me a couple seconds to get lost in the fantasy world.

~~~
Diagon Alley was a place of joy, happiness, and it was the place that every wizard or witch goes to get their supplies for the new school year. All the items that you are supposed to have for Hogwarts can be purchased at the beautiful cobblestoned shopping area. That's where Father was taking me and Draco today.
It has been a couple weeks since the dangerous stormy night but now I could finally relax.
My body was sore for a couple of days, I even had a black and purple bruise on my left shoulder. But luckily, all my clothes covered it. I haven't done anything to make my father angry with me but I was still super jumpy.
But now we were finally getting our supplies from Diagon Alley which means that I would be off to Hogwarts soon.
I would be away from my parents and away from my prison. But I still had to be a perfect pure-blood daughter and I also had to still be with my bratty twin brother. Still, those were really small things that I could handle.
"When can we go Father?" Draco asked, becoming impatient. Father was talking to one of his co-worker in the Leaky Caldron, a pub that leads to Diagon Alley. They have only been talking for about five minutes, but of course Draco came to wait for anything.
Father turned with an annoyed look on his face, "Patients, Draco only one more minute."
Draco rolled his eyes, he was just as annoyed as Father was.
But Father was right, it only took him about a minute to finish up the conversation with his co-worker, then we started over to the brick wall.
"What were you talking about Father?" Draco asked as his father started tapping the wall with his staff.
"We were talking about work, Draco," Father tells him flatly.
Suddenly, the bricks started moving, revealing the joyful wizarding alley.
My eyes widened as I looked around the place. The place was bright, positive, and everyone that I could see had a smile on their face. Most of the people here were teens and kids, while some of them were holding brooms andand different pets. This is what the wizarding world is supposed to be like.
"Where do you want to go first, Draco?" Father asked, as me and Draco both took our Hogwarts acceptance letters.
Dear Miss. Malfoy,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress
I turned to the other side and started reading through some of the books and supplies that we have to bring. I also ready some of the books that we need for some of our classes which my father will probably enjoy.
"Let's start with the books," Father says, looking over Draco's shoulder, "Then we will look for the other stuff."
For the next couple minutes or so we were looking around and getting our supplies. My favorite store so far had to be Flourish and Blotts because of all the books that they had. I would love to live in a bookstore, being to own a bunch of books that you could read whenever you wanted.
As I looked around the bookstore, my father suddenly became impatient just like Draco had back at the pub.
"I think we have all the books we need, Lilith," Father tells me in a chilling voice, "I think it's time we had over to Ollivanders."
I put the book that I was looking at back on the selves and started over to my father who was waiting for me at the open door.
Father walked me and Draco over to the store with the name Ollivanders written on the sign. There was no one inside so my father opened the door which made a bell go off.
I looked around for the owner in the messy store, but it seemed like no one was here.
Ollivanders were filled from floor to ceiling with selves that were crowded with small skinny boxes.
"Lucius Malfoy," A voice says, making me jump. I turned to see an older man with long white hair, light cherry eyes, and a long face, "I haven't seen you since you were here getting your wand all those years ago."
"Hello," Father says in a sly voice, "These are my two children, they are here to get their wands."
"What are your names?" Ollivander asked, eyeing to two of us.
"Draco."
"Lilith," I say in a small voice, "It's a pleasure to meet you sir."
Ollivander smiles, "It's a pleasure to meet you too. Let me start with Draco."
The owner turned to the left and grabbed a box. He took out the wand and handed it to Draco.
"This is a unicorn-hair, ash, 10 inches," Ollivander explained, "Give it a try."
Draco moved the wand in his hand and there was a loud thump. I looked down the small hallway to see that some of the wands had fallen on the floor.
Draco didn't say a word, he just put the wand back on the desk.
This went on for a couple minutes, Draco had tried four different wands and nothing fit.
"I have a good feeling about this one," Ollivander says as he hands a wand that looks like fathers. "This is a 10 inch, hawthorn, dragon-heartstring."
Draco did the same thing that he did with all the other wands but this time, some of the wands magically went back on the self.
Ollivander clapped and Father just nodded his head. Draco had a relieved look on his face as he put the wand back into the case.
"Now, it's your turn," Ollivander says, not being able to look at me in the eye.
Ollivander walked into his hallway a little ways and grabbed a box from the right side. He opened the case once he was in front of us again and then he said, "dragon-heartstring, rowan, 11 inches."
"Rowan?" Father asked, giving the owner a look of suspicion.
"Yes," Ollivander said as he looked at me, not my father, "I know my wands, I can tell that you are the one that needs to weld it."
"I don't understand," I tell him, crossing my arms over my chest, "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Are you scared?" He asked me, staring right into my eyes.
"I'm not scared," I answer.
I didn't understand what was going on. Why was he asking me questions? It seemed like as he looked at me, he was reading me like a book.
I looked over at Father to see that he hadn't taken his eyes off of the owner.
"Why don't you give it a try?" Ollivander says, handing me a beautiful thin black wand.
I copied what Draco did, I moved it around hoping that something good would happen.
To my surprise, a lamp turned on. Ollivander gave a small clap but that was the only noise in the store.
"Are you sure that you like that wand?" Father asked, still giving Ollivander the side eye.
"Yes," I answered honestly. I did like the wand, everything about it felt right and perfect.
Father nodded as he put some coins on the countertop.
I put the beautiful wand back into the case as my thoughts started to wander.
My wand is a dragon-heartstring, rowan, and 11 inches. I thought back to a book I read about wand cores and wands. Rowan was uncommon, I knew but I didn't understand why it was a big deal.
But then it hit me, Rowan is known for creating a very powerful defensive charm so that's why Ollivander asked me if I was scared because he has a feeling that I need protecting.
I don't understand how he knew. Did I not cover up one of my scars enough? What made him think that I need protecting.
Father held the door open from me and Draco as we walked back out into the crowded street of Diagon Alley. I knew that we still had more shopping to do and that we probably haven't been here for that long, I was already feeling tired.
The rest of the time at Diagon Alley was spent getting the rest of our supplies and as we left the beautiful cobblestoned shopping area, I put a mental countdown in my hand until September 1st, the day that I would finally be off to Hogwarts.
But after what happened at Ollivanders, there was another reason why I wanted to go to Hogwarts.
Before it was about learning magic, making friends, and most importantly getting away from my evil parents and my dark gloomy home.
But on September 1st, I will be off to Hogwarts, the place where I can learn to protect myself.
At Hogwarts, I will be able to learn spells that could stop my father from hitting me or using a curse on me.
I know that it will take time, but soon my father won't have any power over me anymore.
