chapter four

"Right, then! First years, this way, please! Come on now! First years, don't be shy!"

I climbed out of the train and looked out into the beautiful starry night. The stars were shining brightly overheard and it reminded me of sitting at my bay window in the middle of the night. I would get lost in the shining lights, thinking what it would be like to be up that high.

"Lilith, come on," said Annie, bringing me back to reality. She grabbed my arm and we walked over to where all the other first years were standing. My eyes soon moved to the tall, long haired man in front of the crowd. I looked over at the boys to see that they were eyeing each other then looking back at the teacher.

"Right, then," He said, "This way to the boats. Come on now. Follow me."

My eyes were moving around, looking at everything. Excitement bubbling up inside of me, a small grin coming onto my face. After I looked around, I turned to see the first years walking away from the train and probably towards the boats that the professor was talking about a couple seconds before.

I had to jog to catch up with the group and my face lit up as I saw the lights of the castle in the distance.

It only took a couple seconds to get to the boats, the professor turned around to look at us and said, "Five people to a boat, let's get going."

My thoughts were still far away but I followed Annie and Pansy towards one of the boats.

The three of us climbed inside, Pansy sat in the back as me and Annie sat in the front. I tightened my grip around the light that was inside the boat as the boats magically started moving forward.

As Hogwarts got closer, it became even more beautiful. It continued to grow and the lights from inside started to become brighter.

"Amazing, isn't it," Annie whispered to me, a small grin on her face.

I nodded then turned back to the castle, my thoughts wandering off again.

It didn't take very long to get to the castle, but soon we were off the boats and starting towards the entrance of the castle. The inside of the castle was just as anyone would expect. There were old stone walls with long staircases and old patterns on the pillars.

The first years in front lead us up the staircase that was right beside the door that we entered from. As I walked up the stairs, I looked to see a elder witch with black outfit waiting for us. I could guess that she was a professor and she was waiting to show the Dining Hall.

The group came to a stop in front of the professor and that's when she started talking.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," She said in a welcoming voice, "Now, in a few moments, you will pass through these doors and join your classmates, but before you can take your seats, you must be sorted into your houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin."

Draco grinned, turning his head to look at me. I rolled my eyes at him and turned back to the professor.

"Now, while you're here, your house will be like your family," She continued, "Your triumphs will earn you points. Any rule-breaking, and you will lose points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup."

"Trevor!" A boy yelled. I turned to see a rather plump boy taking a big toad into his hand, and he was standing right in front of the professor.

Some students laughed at the boy and I knew that Draco probably cracked a grin at the boy. But I just rolled my eyes, just wanting to move on.

The professor gave the boy a look as he got to his feet and mumbled an apology.

She looked at the boy once more before turning back to the group and saying, "The sorting ceremony will begin momentarily."

That's when she turned and started towards the doors behind her. She was gone in a second, leaving us alone.

"It's true, then," My twin brother says as he eyes a boy in the front of the group. A boy with brown hair, circle glasses, and a lightning bolt scar turned to look at him, it was the famous Harry Potter, "What they're saying on the train. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts."

That's when everyone started mumbling and gossiping, this was probably the most exciting news to them since they got their Hogwarts letter.

"Let's see what happened," I heard Pansy whisper to Annie. The two girls were standing behind me and I knew that Pansy was probably thinking about the bet she made with Crabbe.

"This is Crabbe, Lockwood, and Goyle," Draco said before he walked over to the famous boy, "And I'm Malfoy. Draco Malfoy."

I heard a small snort and I looked to see that it was the red-haired boy standing next to the famous Harry Potter.

"Think my name's funny, do you?" Draco asked, trying to look serious and sly, "No need to ask you yours. Red hair and a hand-me-down robe? You must be a Weasley."

The Weasley boy eyes fell to the floor, saying nothing else to my twin.

Draco turned back to face Harry, who didn't look thrilled at his comment. Draco grinned and continued, "You'll soon find out that some wizarding families are better than others, Potter. You don't want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there."

That's then Draco stock out his hand, thinking that the famous wizard was going to take it.

Harry eyed Draco's hand then said, "I think I can tell the wrong sort for myself, thanks."

I heard Pansy give a small laugh and Crabbe let out a sigh. Draco's face was priceless as he looked at the famous Harry Potter, he probably had never heard the word no in his life.

That's when my father's voice creeped into my head, making me think of something. Something that would end with me getting stabbed in the back.

But that's when I took a step forward, towards the famous boy and my twin brother.

"Come on, Draco," I said as I stood beside him, "You gonna embarrass yourself more if you keep standing here like an idiot."

Draco turned and glared at me, "Oh shut up."

"You shut up," I rolled my eyes after I said that.

Draco rolled his eyes back at me as he walked back over to his friends.

I was about to go after him but that's when Harry asked, "Who are you?"

I turned, looking back at the famous boy. He wasn't that attractive, the glasses were probably the turn-off and to me it seemed that he was just a normal kid, like the rest of us. Not this famous person that everyone knows about.

"I'm Lilith Malfoy," I answered, "And sorry that I bothered you. I know that famous people don't like to be bothered."

Harry gave me a look then I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned quickly around to see that it was the professor. She didn't look angry with me but I quickly went back over to my brother and the others. Draco still had an annoyed look on his face and the three boys also looked rather annoyed. The only people that were smiling were Annie and Pansy.

The professor's eyes were still on me for a couple seconds but then she turned to look at the group.

"We're ready for you," The witch said, "Follow me."

The professor turned around and started walking towards the door, all of us following close behind. The doors to the Great Hall opened automatically and we all walked inside.

The Great Hall was just as the books describe it. There were four long tables that were filled with students then a table in front filled with teachers, candles were floating overhead with a magical sky, and it was just amazing.

We walked down the middle row until we came to a stop in front of the teacher's table.

"All right," She said, "Will you wait along here, please? Now, before we begin, Professor Dumbledore would like to say a few words."

That's when the professor in the big gold chair got to his feet. He had very long white hair and he was wearing a red robe with a hat that matched.

"I have too few start-of-term notices I wish to announce," Professor Dumbledore says, "The first years, please note that the dark forest is strictly forbidden to all students. Also, our caretaker Mr. Filch, has asked me to remind you that the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a most painful death. Thank you."

Professor Dumbledore sat back down as curiosity started to bubble up inside of me. Of course, I didn't want to die a painful death but for some reason, I wonder what could be in there that is so dangerous.

"What do you think is in there?" I asked Annie, who was standing right next to me.

Annie shrugged her shoulder and looked back up at the professor.

That's when my eyes fell onto the old, weird hat that was sitting nicely on a stool in front of us. I knew what it was immediately, it was the sorting hat.

"When I call your name," The witch said to us as she opened up a piece of paper, "You will come forth, I shall place the sorting hat on your head... and you will be sorted into your houses. Hermione Granger."

I watched as the girl from the train walked up to the stool and took a seat. She looked rather nervous to me, but I could feel my stomach knot up at the thought of me going up there.

"Ah, right, then." The sorting hat mumbled, "Hmm. Right. Ok... GRYFFINDOR!"

The girl immediately grinned from ear to ear as the other Gryffindors started clapping and cheered for her. The hat was taken off her head and she skipped over to the Gryffindor table.

The professor eyed the list again before she said, "Draco Malfoy."

Draco looked around for a second, he even looked a little nervous to my surprise. He walked up to the stool and took a seat but the hat already yelled, "SLYTHERIN!"

Draco grinned as Slytherin cheered loudly. He got to his feet and walked proudly over to the Slytherin table.

My breath caught in my throat as I heard the professor say, "Lilith Malfoy."

I took in a deep breath as I started towards the stool and the magical hat. I tried not to look nervous but I knew that it was showing all over my face. I looked over at Draco, who was giving me a cunning smile, it was almost threatening.

The hat was soon placed on my hat and it was honestly lighter then I thought it was. I took in another deep breath and waited for what the sorting hat was going to say about me.

"Hmmm... this is interesting... very interesting..." The sorting hat mumbled, "You can't be a Hufflepuff that's for sure. But you have the smarts of a Ravenclaw, the cunningness of a Slytherin, and the bravery of a Gryffindor... but where to put you... Hmm... I will say... SLYTHERIN!"

I finally let out a breath, I have never felt so relieved.

The Slytherin's clapped loudly once more as I came over to their table. I sat opposite Draco, who looked somewhat happy of my sorting. But I didn't care about what he thought, Father was going to be so happy.

"Susan Bones!"

The sorting was a lot more relaxing after I was sorted. Crabbe and Goyle were sorted into Slytherin along with Annie, Pansy, Aidan, and a couple others that I can't remember. The other girl from the train, Isabelle, the red-haired boy and a couple were sorted into Gryffindor.

But things got interesting after the famous Harry Potter was called for his sorting. Everyone was sitting on the edge of their seats, including the teachers. Almost everyone in the Great Hall was interested in where Harry Potter would be sorted. Every house wanted him, which house would he get was the question.

Most people mumbled to each other as Harry walked up cautiously to the sorting hat. He sat down and the hat was placed on top of his head.

"Difficult, very difficult," The sorting hat murmured, "Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind, either. There's talent-- oh, yes-- and a thirst to prove yourself."

"He only has to move a finger to prove himself," Someone from the Slytherin table mumbled.

"But where to put you?"

That's when Harry and the sorting hat started mumbling stuff to each other, going back and forth about where to put him. Everyone seemed to lean a little closer, becoming impatient.

"Well, if you're sure..." The hat said, "Better be... GRYFFINDOR!"

A grin that was bigger than Hermione's came on to the boys face. The Gryffindor table started cheering and chanting, "We got Potter! We got Potter!"

Most of the teachers seemed rather excited by the choice as well. But beside the teachers and the Gryffindors, everyone else seemed upset. Some people mumbled to each other and some just wore snarls on their faces. I could even see that Draco was a little upset by the fact that the famous wizard wasn't put in Slytherin.

After what happened with Harry Potter, the sorting seemed to become a bit boring but it only took a little while until everyone was sorted into their houses.

That's when a glass dinged, making the mutter go silent.

"Your attention. Please," says the witch that I learned was named Professor McGonagall.

Professor Dumbledore got to his feet once more and said, "Let the feast begin."

That's when a bunch of food appeared in front of us making everyone's eyes widen. That's really when the Great Hall came alive, with everyone chattering and eating the very delicious food.

I didn't talk very much, like I did on the train. I only listened to what Aidan, Pansy, and Annie were bickering about this time. I also listen to some of the conversation that I overheard with the older kids, most of them talking about their summers and sometimes bring up the whole situation with Harry Potter.

"I'm telling you now Aidan," Annie said as she took a bit of some turkey, "I am going to be better at flying than you will, my mother is a quidditch coach for bloody sake."

Aidan snorted, "That does not mean anything, Annie. You could really suck at it."

"There's no way."

"I believe it."

"Don't tell me that there's going to be another bet," I mumbled before eating some of my own turkey.

"Really, Lilith," Pansy asked.

"What."

Annie gave a small smile and said, "We're not going to bet on it, we're just going to have to see who is better in class."

That's when the two went back to eating and they didn't talk for the rest of the feast.

Now that I am officially a Slytherin, I hope that my father will be happy with me for once. But I knew deep down inside that he wouldn't be, he would be convinced.

But I knew that I couldn't worry about that right now. I just need to think about classes tomorrow.
