Chapter 6
"I be telling you he was no good.", Mrs. Casey grumbled as Ted Casey switched to the news channel. A pale man with blonde hair slicked back with far too much gel appeared on the screen. He had dancing light blue eyes that would make ladies swoon— if he wasn't 4 feet tall. Rae was sure there was a stool he was standing on, because his head was actually visible behind the pedestal.
"Liam Wayland.", their mother growled, "Don't know how he be getting elected." Mr. Casey patted her back, but his expression looked somewhat amused. Rae, who was sprawled on the recliner, had to agree with her mother. Wayland's voice was about as powerful as he was tall. It gave the uncomfortable impression of a mouse squeaking for cheese.
He was making a speech after being elected, and he had gone as far to bring 5 guards in black uniforms, who stood behind him, along with another woman. They never moved, never spoke. Never needed to itch their noses. Rae didn't even think they blinked. To her, they seemed much more intimating and creepy then the president.
"People of this country! I be working every day to bring you the service you be needing!", a loud roar rose from the audience, who were not shown on screen. From agreement or anger, Rae could not tell. "You be electing me, and I be making sure you not be disappointed. First of all, we be clearing up room for what be mattering the most to us... YOU! We be removing sidewalks and replacing them with space for vehicles. This be resolving our concern about students be getting to school safely—"
This was followed by a string of cursing from Mrs. Casey. "Oh, like you be caring about safety. You not even be installing railings on them hunk of junk! First the lawns and now this, where we supposed to be walking then?", her face was becoming more flushed by the second, "You know what, YOU CAN TAKE YOUR CONCERN AND SHOVE IT UP MY—"
She was stopped from the sound of hurried footsteps. Ethan, looking worried, walked into the sitting room. "I just be finishing homework. What be happening?"
"Nothing Ethan.", Ted Casey laughed as their mother calmed down, "We just be watching president's speech."
"Be making room, will you?", he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and perched on the edge of Rae's recliner. She grudgingly obliged.
It seemed that the president was almost done his piece, as he gestured to the woman behind him. "My vice-president, Linda McGorray will be making one last announcement for you all."
Rae frowned as the pretty lady took his place on the pedestal. Now that she was up close, it was easier to see her copper hair and freckles. She sent Wayland a look before beginning.
"Thank you, Liam.", her voice was brisk and soft, but caught everyones attention immediately. "I be here to tell you all about a law, which has being unanimously voted in from your government. As we all know, overpopulation be the leading worry for todays world. It being cause of all hunger and suffering of our people. Your president", here she shot him another look, "thinks it be best— for the wishes of our people— to be either narrowing it down or be bringing in money to pay for the expenses."
Chatter rose amongst the people in the audience. Linda McGorray held up her hand for silence. "We be bringing back ways used in the past in some countries. After this law is passed— today, each family will have to pay for each additional child, that is, any more than one."
Rae felt like she had been slapped. She spotted Wayland, in the back, hiding behind his vice-president, letting her get all the backlash. Coward.
It took even longer for her to settle down the crowd this time. "Please. You be understanding that this be saving the human race in the long run! And it not be much, just an additional tax of about a few thousand dollars every month!"
"And that not be much?", Mrs. Casey growled.
"And for any family who cannot pay immediately, the government is generously providing camps to send the kids so they may work to um, pay it back."
"That be child labour!", Mr. Casey spoke, finally as furious as his wife.
"We know this be hard," McGorray said a bit frantically, "but we be wanting you all to remember that this be for the good of the people. Thank you and goodnight."
Then the television flickered off, as if not aware of the change it had made in their lives.
