Chapter 4

Rae noticed that there was a new hole in her sock. Maybe if she focused on that, she could block out everything else going on in the room. Yet— she could still hear each of Mrs. Terracotta's words ringing loud and true in her ears.

"Once again, I just really be thinking that Rae is really behind."

Her parents nodded, their faces turning more and more conflicted with every passing second. Rae's parents were sitting in her classroom opposite to the teachers desk. It was after school, and instead of reposing at home, she was forced to face this. It was pretty much any student's nightmare.

"And it isn't that she be not smart. She just not be trying."

Please let that be it, please let that be it, Rae was chanting in her head.

"And I'm sure you be aware of her texting incidenting?"

Rae braced herself.

"I be sorry," her father said first, "What be?"

Mrs. Terracotta looked surprised, "I thought you be knowing! The substitute teacher be the one telling me."

Mrs. Casey glanced at Rae quickly before shaking her head. A glance that let her know she was in big trouble.

"Well, Rae was caught texting. Be texting Asha Jones in class." You wouldn't have cared. Rae thought angrily, It was just because of that stupid substitute.

"Thank you," Mr. Casey said tentatively, "We be talking to her."

And get talked to she did. After catching one of the last rides home, Mrs. Casey went on a full-out tangent.

"Why you not telling us this?", her voice was surprisingly controlled. Maybe that was what made it so scary.

Rae just shrugged, she was done lying.

"Rae," her mother pleaded, "You be so much potential! If you just be paying attention— if be more like Ethan—"

"I not be Ethan.", she scowled adamantly, "Why not school let you talk to other people? Why it not be the teacher teaches us."

"That not how works."

"Well it be boring! It be boring and I hate it!"

That night, the parents locked Rae and Ethan in her room while they voted. The kids were, however allowed to stay up to watch the results. It was, of course, the one day the government allowed the energy to stay on until 10. The results grew decreasingly more depressing until it was announced, Liam Wayland had won the election.

"I don't know why you hating him so much.", their father said to his wife as they headed upstairs, "He be not seeming so bad. The speech was good, at least."

"Yes, but his policies be—"

"We be considering tax rates too."

Rae and Ethan too, started preparing for bed.

"What be they talking about?", Ethan gestured to their parent's bedroom.

"Grown up stuff."

"I not understanding it.", he frowned, like it was his biggest concern.

The lights went out, hiding his worried face. After seeing it happen so many times, Rae barely flinched. "Neither am I, Ethan."
