Chapter 12

Wait, let me be getting this straight...", Asha sat across from Rae crosslegged. Her younger twin siblings Billy and Dion were hoarding the couch, watching mindless television, so they had to resort to the carpet instead. Rae held onto her bag like she was clutching onto her life.

"Your neighbor be owning an illegal library and now that she be dead, you get it?"

"Basically."

"And you be wanting me to— BE TURNING IT DOWN BILLY", for the friendly green dinosoar on T.V had started singing shapes be fun, shapes be great!. "to..."

"Help me spread the word at school and be helping me run it?"

"Which be most likely lead to jail."

"Yes?", Rae shrugged hopefully.

"I not be knowing Rae...", Asha said seriously, "What be if some excited kid goes babbling to the teachers?"

"But you took it well."

"Yes, but I be your friend. I be used to your crazy."

"Come on, if we can't be trusting our classmates, we can't be trusting anybody."

"Still, I not be wanting to get in trouble. Things be hard enough on their own at home..."

As if on cue, Mya strolled in from the kitchen, still in her nurses scrubs. Mya was the eldest of the Jones's children, and looked like an older version of Asha, with her hair shorter and her skin darker. She had recently gotten a job at a clinic and never let anyone forget it.

"Asha, mom be saying we have to eat dinner now. Rae, you be welcome to join us."

"No, that be okay. I not bring my pills, and I better be getting home soon anyways."

Mya nodded and started leaving for the kitchen, but Asha called back for her. "Where mom and dad go anyways? I not be seeing them since... you know."

She could've mistaken it, but it seemed to Rae that Mya's face darkened for a second. "Oh... emergency at work probably. Nothing to worry about."

"And you, shouldn't you be at work?"

Mya stood up taller, "I be earned a free day for my hard work. Now I be getting ready for dinner."

A second after she left, her voice carried from the kitchen. "And Billy and Dion, please turn that thing down!"

Asha snickered and turned her attention to Rae. "Like I said—"

"You not be understanding! These books— they can change the world, I promising. We can bring old language back— here, I be showing you."

And she reached into her bag, assured that Billy and Dion were much too young to understand what was going on, to pull out one of them. Asha's eyes widened almost immediatly. No matter how against the idea she may seem, it was still a book— an artifact that would be bid for millions of dollars.

"We be reading it together, okay?". Rae said gently, opening up to the first page.

"Uh... ok. Mr and Mrs. Dursley,", Asha's eyes moved across the page as she mumbled half to herself, "of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were... What this say?"

"Perfectly normal."

"perfectly normal, thank you very much." She looked up, "This be strange."

"I know."

"This be dangerous."

"I know."

"But..."

"You'll help me?", her voice took on that hopeful tone again.

Asha sighed, but Rae knew she had won. "Fine..."

"Thanks Jones! And keep that book, read it. I really be liking it."

They smiled at one another, but their friendly bonding was interrupted by an annoying green dinosoar.

Shapes are great! Triangles, squares and

"I SAID, TURN IT DOWN!"
