If you're actively looking for a dog or cat, PLEASE don't buy from a breeder.  Approx. 30-35% of all animals in shelters WORLDWIDE are purebreds, so just ask if they have any purebreds.

Another reason to adopt: It's so much cheaper. It's only $50 to adopt a dog or cat from a shelter, but breeders range from $150 to $2000 (or R25000 if you're South African, 1500 pounds or so in Britain I think). And ultimately, adopting saves a life, whereas buying wastes one. The really sad truth. 

There's an SPCA in every city worldwide - literally EVERY CITY. Google "local SPCA" for results.
