Dolls and Tea
A bell rang as I opened the door to Angel's Wing Antiques. Immediately the tune of London Bridge is falling down once again floated into my ears. I looked around and saw that the shop was full of different types of dolls, and also some lanterns.
"Welcome." The music came to a halt as the voice sounded. The owner of the voice has orange hair underneath a black top hat. He wore a lengthy blue tailcoat and was carrying a music box. Drossel Keinz.
"Hello?" I said uncertainly. I don't know how I got here and why I came here in the first place.
"That ring..." Drossel said as he stood up in a mechanical motion.
"Oh this?" I raised my hand showing the Shard of Hope.
He frowned slightly, "Oh? It has chosen you as its owner. And so I think to myself, 'What rare occasion. It has not occurred to me that this cursed stone would ever choose an owner.' "
I gave an awkward laugh, "Yea, what does that mean?"
He tilted his head a bit more than a normal person should be able to, "So I thought to myself, 'What do I do now? I know, I must bring her to Master.' Please will you follow me?"
"...Sure." I followed him to the back of Angel's Wing Antiques. he opened a door and beckoned me in. Through a corridor, a giant castle-like mansion appeared before my eyes. It was an oddly built castle and it gave off an eerie feeling. Drossel came through the corridor after me and shut the door. We walked to the front of the castle and he pushed open the plain double door revealing a dimly lit hall with blue and white ceramic flooring tiles. The walls were of an aqua color and at the other end of the hall was another door. However, what was most peculiar about this room is that there is a single girl stood on a wooden platform in the centre of the room. Her skin was as white as porcelain but as we got closer to her I saw that her eyes looked like eyes of a dead fish.
Suddenly the girl rolled her eyeballs to stared at me without moving her head as I walked pass her. She raised a hand and was about to bring it down on me when Drossel started playing his music box, producing the tune of London Bridge. As soon as she heard the music, she seemed to calm down and she went back to her original standing position.
"What was that?" I asked, a bit startled.
"Fear not. Master will answer all your question." Drossel said without looking at me.
I have an idea of who the 'Master' could be after watching the anime, but I still wasn't quite sure if my guess was right. Well, I'll just have to wait and see.
After continuously walking through countless number of rooms and corridors, we finally arrived at the top room of the mansion. Behind the firm-looking double door, there was a decent sized room with enormous windows all around the room, allowing curtains of moonlight to fall onto the floor. As my gaze follow the silver moonlight, I saw that there was a strange symbol on the grey floor. I squinted, trying to think of what this familiar symbol was, then I remembered. It was the same symbol that was burned onto Ciel's back, the mark of a 'noble beast'.
"We meet again, my pure one." A familiar voice spoken from the dark corner of the room. It startled me and made me jump slightly. Gosh, I seemed to be easily startled lately. A person walked out into the moonlight. As I expected, it was Ash.
"Yes, long time no see." I said sarcastically. We saw each other like half an hour ago.
He chuckled, "I wouldn't expect you to be the one to have picked up the ring. But then once again, you never fail to surprise me."
"Master, I shall be taking my leave." Drossel bowed before he went out of the room and shut the door behind him.
"So how does the ring work? You know, luring people here and stuff?" I asked curiously.
"This stone has been cursed. During the long history of the Hope Diamond, it was uncertain who owned it at around the year of 1972, after it had been stolen in the French Revolution from Marie Antoinette. In fact, it has somehow gotten into the hands of a fallen angel. As you know, in order for the fallens to return back to heaven, we have to cleanse and purify the unclean souls. The great fallen one used some long lost angelic power on the stone of Hope, making it able to detect the pureness of one's soul. It also has the power to attract the current wearer to the angelic owner so they could be cleansed. And that is how." Ash explained standing upright like the butler he should be.
"Okay, so it's some sort of mysterious 'long lost angelic power'. Mmm.. I'm sure I'm not the first one to come here with the ring. What happened to the rest?" I asked.
"So far, up until now, none has yet to have a pure soul. I have made them into things which can preserve only their outer beauty." He paused, "Tell you what, follow me, I shall show you, pure one."
I followed Ash downstairs and into one of the rooms I have yet to be in, in the complex, maze-like layout of this grand mansion. The room had a hollow feeling to it and it was dark.
Ash clicked his fingers and a ghostly blue flame appeared in midair. It floated to the nearest candle lighting it up. All the candles in the room seemed to be connected by tiny strings, causing a chain reaction. This made all the candles in the room lit up at once. I had to turn my head away due to the sudden light.
As my eyes got used to the brightness, I saw a startling sight. Rows of young girls were lined up neatly. Just like the girl in the front hall, they all had porcelain-like pale skin and expressionless faces.
Ash walked between the rows of motionless young girls and he stopped in front of one with chocolate brown hair and dead-looking big blue eyes.
He lightly stroked her face, "Isn't she a thing of beauty? However, this one s a failure." He suddenly snapped the girl's neck without even having to put in effort. Straws fell out of the severed head and Ash tossed the head to the side of the room.
"Oh, so you made them into dolls." I said nodding.
"Precisely. Their souls are now purified and sent off to heaven."
"How come it's only young girls that's here? Surely people other than young girls have picked up the ring before." I asked without meaning to.
"This is because I believe that the purest soul would be found in young ladies. The young are untouched by the uncleanliness and sins of the world, and men of all age are just full of lust and wrath. Therefore I have ordered Drossel, the person who led you to me, to arrange such that only young ladies would pick up the Shard of Hope. Unfortunately, all of them here is unclean and I decided to turn them into dolls. I think doing so is the best option. I'm sure you would understand and agree with me, my pure one?"
"Er.. Yes, of course."
He smiled, "I knew you would agree. I'm so glad I found someone in this world who understand the way I think."
I asked, "So...now what? You are not going make me into one of them seeing as I picked up the ring, right?"
"No, no, no, of course not! You are pure, and therefore I have no reason to further purify you. My pure one, now that I have shown you my collection, let's stand here no further. Let us proceed to the tea room and sit for a while."
We went to the tea room of this mansion and once again, Ash once again lit up this room with his 'magical' flame. He pulled a stick on the wall with the label of 'servant calling' on top. We sat down comfortablely on chairs and soon Drossel arrived.
"Master, m'lady, what would you like?' Drossel asked as he humbly bowed down.
"Bring us some tea, Drossel."Ash said without looking at him.
"Very well, master." Drossel bowed again before exiting.
"This is supposed to be the mansion of the Duke of Mandalay, isn't it?" I asked, "How come you are occupying it?"
"The last Duke of Mandalay died years ago. This mansion was empty, so I decided to use it as a place of cleansing."
"Was Drossel a servant of the Duke as well?"
"Yes, he was the head butler of the Mandalay household. But when the Duke of Mandalay died with no relatives, he was the only one to have stayed in this mansion. I thought that was a very beautiful servant and master relationshp, so I purified him by turning him into a doll. I also fed him the memory of me being his master. Since then, he has served me with much loyalty."
I laughed a little, "Wow so angel is like all powerful, changing memory by meddling with the Cinematic Record, magical fire power, epic healing skillz and dem wings."
Drossel came in with a cart of tea, "Excuse me master and m'lady, your tea is here. It is Earl Grey." Drossel poured the freashly brewed tea into to china tea cups and set one in front of each of us. He then left with the cart.
I took a sip of the hot tea and it warmed my up from the cold English weather. Ash also took a sip of his.
"I thought angels don't drink or eat." I said.
"We do not need to. However we can consume food and drinks if we wish to. Unlike demons, our taste is the same as humans, so we can eat and drink for the pleasure of it." Ash continued to drink his Earl Grey.
I nodded showing that I heard. We carried on drinking our teas in silence. I couldn't help but to sneak glances at Ash, amazed over the fact that I am here, just calmly drinking tea with an angel, a fallen one. And I am like bff with a shinigami, Undertaker. And also I am friend with a demon, Sebastian. Though this friendship is probably only one way, considering how apparently demons are not supposed to have emotions.
That reminded me, "You know, Earl Phantomhive and his demon butler Sebastian is probably looking for me right now."
Speaking of the devil, Drossel suddenly came back in and said, "Sorry for the interruption, Master and m'lady, but there seems to be three visitors in the front hall. Ciel Phantomhive have brought two friends, one in red, and one seems like your demon hound, Master. I have tuned the dolls into holding them off for the moment, but they should be here soon."
Ash put his half empty tea cup down swiftly, "We must hurry then. My pure one, come."
We walked out of the room and he stopped in front of a big window. He opened it and stepped on foot onto the window seal.
"Oh god." I said involuntarily as Ash scooped me up with one arm. He jumped out of the window and spread his majestic angel wings. We started travelling in the air rapidly. I looked ahead to see that we were heading towards a tall, lone tower near the mansion. Ash landed us on a window seal of a conveniently opened window of the tower, and walked me into a room with creepy doll parts scattered around. I noticed that the room's roof was incredibility high.
He put me down onto a chair gently stood back up straight, "My pure one, I'm afraid I have to take my leave now, wouldn't want to be caught by the Earl would we?"
I simply nodded. He continued, "Have you thought of what tell that Phantomhive and his demon when they get here?"
"Not really. What do you want me to tell them?"
"Please do not inform them about me being a part of this case. The rest, tell them whatever you wish to."
"Alright, I'll just say something along the line of I found the ring, and somehow got here without knowing, and got kidnapped by Drossel. I won't mention you. Sounds good?"
"Yes, that will be fine. One thing, I am aware that you are yet to be conferred as Baroness, but would it be possible for you to start keeping an eye on the Earl of Phantomhive? Her Majesty wishes to know even the slightest hint of betrayal. I believe you still have the royal stamp in your possession, am I right?"
"Yes, I do. And sure, I'll keep and eye on Ciel."
"I thank you in the place of her majesty. Please wait here, I'm sure the Phantomhive butler would find you soon." He saw me frowning slightly, "Don't worry, no harm shall come to your way, you have my word on that. Now then, farewell, my pure one."
"Bye... farewell." I waved with a smile.
He walked out of the room and shut the door behind him. I sat there for a bit, but then I got bored and decided to have a look around this strange room.
I walked to the nearest table. On top was different parts of porcelain dolls, be it head, torso, arms and legs. Some were unfinished, some half painted, and some were broken. There were also blots of different color paint and glue on the table. I raised my hand to pick up one of doll heads. But before I could, a voice interrupted.
"You mustn't touch that." Drossel Keinz's voice sounded somewhere above. I looked up and saw that the room actually stretched across several floors, and Drossel was stood on the one above.
"Oh, alright."
Suddenly tiny strings flew around me and tightened. I struggled instinctively but found out that I could not move my body according to will. I realized that Drossel was controlling me with his puppet strings.
"Hey, I thought your master said not to hurt me?" I said loudly, a bit mad that my freedom tof movement was taken away.
"Yes, but he did not instruct me not to use my strings on you. It isn't hurting, is it?"
True, it didn't hurt, but it was just annoying having someone else controlling what you do.
Drossel made me sat back down on the wooden chair silently. We stayed like that for quite a while.
Out of nowhere, I heard a distance howl. There was also a distance 'clonk' sound. Drossel made me close my eyes as soon as that happened. Wait, how was he controlling my eyelids as well?
Not long after, some people barged into the room. I heard heals running over to me. The person put his/her hand on my shoulder and shook slightly.
"Are you alright? Can you hear me?" That person said with a concerned voice. I recognized it as Ciel.
I wanted to speak but Drossel made me keep my mouth shut.
"It looks like we were a little too late." Grell said with his flamboyant voice that I would recognize anywhere
"No.." Ciel whispered.
Drossel made me open my eyes and I saw that standing in front of me was three people: a small Earl, a demon in black , and a shinigami in red.
"Thank goodness..." Ciel exhaled when he saw me opened my eyes.
"The ring..." I said, raising my left hand with the Hope diamond ring on.
"The Hope diamond? Why do you have that?" Ciel asked.
All of a sudden I felt the strings tightened around me and I was forced to move out of the chair.
"Yes, why?" Drossel said from above, still controlling me, "Why does her body move independent of her will? And.." A halberd shot towards me through the air. I shut my eyes intuitively waiting for the impact, but I felt that Drossel control my arms so that I would catch the halberd smoothly. "Why does she hurt her friends?"
Drossel made me swing the halberd down on Ciel. Of course, Sebastian jumped in the way and quickly got Ciel out of the way. However, Drossel didn't seem to be giving up any time soon. My body kept on pursuing them with the Halberd, each time unsuccessfully. Woohoo, bucket list: attempting to chop a demon, ticked!
While dodging around with Ciel, Sebastian said, "Grell. You can see this too, can't you?"
Grell was just sat cross-legged cutting his fingernails with his death scythe scissors, "I suppose. But I might chip my blades, so.."
Sebastian caught and held the Halberd, and he smiled charmingly to Grell, "Please?"
Seeing that, that one horny shinigami instantly jumped up, "Oh, Sebas-chan! you're asking me for something? In that case, during the kiss, can there be... can there be tongue?"
"I haven't the faintest idea what you mean. But in fact, I can tie a cherry stem in a knot with my tongue." Sebastian is such a tease.
"Oh, yes!!!!" Grell looked like he was was fantasying kissing with Sebastian. And I can assure you, he wasn't the only one there doing it.
Grell maneuvered quickly to me, "It's unfogivable for you to have a better blade then me." He swung his death scythes quicker than the eye could see. All the restrains on my body are now gine and I fell over to the floor.
Sebastian picked up one of the strings, "It's a puppet string."
"This sharp cut only comes with a death scythe. Well, Sebas-chan? I'm amazing, aren't I? Compliment me, Compliment me!" Grell said waving his tiny scissors around. Ah, that's why I love Grell so much, he's so cute!
"Good for you. Not just anyone would run with scissors." Sebastian said emotionless. Was that even a compliment?
"Oh, I'm flattered to DEATH!" Apparently Grell took it as one.
"And the puppet string leads to..." They all looked up.
"So I thought to myself," Drossel made his puppet strings tie around the three, "What should I use to make my new dolls?"
"Then I will ask you this- what are you made of?" Sebastian asked, unfazed.
"Hmm? What am I.., made of?"
"Yes. You see, you don't seem to be made of very high quality materials." Sebastian, that was harsh.
"So I thought to myself: 'I know I must be human, yet lately I often find termites crawling out of my ears.'"
While Drossel was distracted, Sebastian suddenly kicked the halberd on the floor and it hit Drossel very hard. Then, using Grell as a stepping stone, Sebastian jumped up and slashed Drossel with the halberd. Both Drossel and the halberd fell on top of poor Grell.
I was watching all this leaning on the wall.
"I would never loose to a man without style." Sebastian said after landing.
Grell inched towards Sebastian lovingly, "That's my Sebastian! So stylish!"
Ciel ignored him, "So he was a doll too?"
Grell stood up, "Drossel Keinz. His soul was collected five years ago. But for some reason, we detected signs of survival."
"Someone must have fitted him with a makeshift soul." Sebastian said.
Drossel started moving again even though his head was split opened and straws were falling out, "So I thought to myself: 'I will report to my master.'" He started walking.
"What wrong with him? He's all torn up and he still wants to serve his master?" Grell said, disgusted.
"I can understand. You see, he is merely a butler." Sebastian said.
Drossel fell over opening another door in the room. Behind the door, there was a chair in the center of the room facing away from us. Also Pluto was there laying on his stomach.
"Pluto!?" Ciel said.
Pluto looked over here, but then licked the sleeve of whoever was sat on that chair.
"Why is he being so friendly?" Ciel said.
"I'm very sorry." A voice sounded form the chair, "My butler is so incompetent, I'm unable to offer you hospitality."
"So you are behind this. Why would you make girls into dolls?" Ciel asked.
The voice explained how beauty can be preserved by doll-making, and how it is a 'noble work'. He then started say how Ciel was fated to die, "I cannot allow someone like you to exist in this world. Unclean, unnecessary, unfruitful. And therefore I try to snuff you out."
"What!?" Ciel was shock.
"Snuff out the unclean, the unnecessary, the unfruitful... Snuff him out! Snuff him out! Snuff him out!" As the voice repeated it got weirder and squeakier.
"Don't play games with me!" Ciel shouted madly and ran over to the front side of the chair. I followed Grell and Sebastian over there as well. There was a sudden pain in my ankle but I ignored it.
Turned out there was a small doll there, and it suddenly did a jump-scare on us. If I was not expecting this because i have seen it in he anime, I probably would have screamed.
The small doll ran away quickly. Grell was hiding behind Sebastian, trembling.
"Catch it, Sebastian!" Ciel ordered.
"The person manipulating it is not here, my lord." Sebastian said.
"Let's get out of here, I don't want to be here any longer." I said.
Ciel nodded and we started walking. But just as I stepped on my right foot the pain shot through my ankle again, and I fell over.
"What's wrong, milady?" Sebastian ask bending down.
"I seem to have hurt my ankle during all this." I said rubbing my ankle.
"I apologize for the contact." Suddenly Sebastian picked me up bridal style. A lot of people seem to have carried me lately. I mean, tonnes of fangirls would pay everything they have to be in my position right now. Wait, have I said that before?
"Hurry up, let's get out of here." Grell shooed.
We walked down the long stairs to the grassy bit in front of the mansion.
Grell jumped into the air towards Sebastian, "Sebas-chan! Now for our passionate kiss!" Sebastian dodged and Grell hit the floor face first, causing dust to fly everywhere.
"So Grell," I spoke up, "I am about to inherit the title of Baroness, which was previously Madam Red's title. Do I get to inherit her butler as well?"
"What are you saying... oh. Girl, I'm busy with job of the Dispatch. I have to collect a lot of troublesome souls before I can get my beloved red chainsaw death scythe back!" Grell fake cried.
"Aw shame, I would love for you to be my butler, however incompetent you might be as one." I said.
"You starting, girl?"
"No, you might not be an experienced butler, unlike our Sebastian here, but you were a good actor... I mean actress when you pretended to be Madam Red's butler."
"Aww, thanks, girl!" Grell smiled with his shape teeth.
"And you wouldn't really want to turn down an offer by a cute girl like me!" I said half sarcastically.
"I have no interest in girls. Though I have to say you look good in that red gown."
"Thanks, Grell! I know right, red is a good color! And I love your hair as well. You really have to tell me your secret of how to make your hair look so nice, and how you keep them neat and in place even after you fought a demon!"
"Oh, girl you flatter me to Dea-"
Grell was cut off by Ciel, "Enough of this chit-chat."
Sebastian look at Grell, "What shall we do, young master? Would you like me to avenge Madam Red now?"
As soon as Grell heard that he hurriedly got up, "F-Fine, Sebastian I'll leave your lips for next time!" Grell jumped up inhumanly high,"Bye-bye! Smooch!" He then disappeared into the trees.
"Let's get back quickly and treat your injury." Ciel said in his usual monotone.
Ciel's carriage was parked in the parking lot of an inn not far away. We got into it and drove back to Ciel's London town house. Sebastian sat me down on a sofa at the living room and got some bandages to wrap up my ankle.
When Sebastian was wrapping my ankle he said, "You are just like young master. You both have a talent in getting kidnapped."
"Mmmm, not sure if I should, but I'll take that as a complement." I said.
Ciel walked into the living room and stopped to the side of the sofa I was sitting on, "I need to talk to you about what happened, and also about that ring."
"Young master, excuse my rudeness, but please be patient." Sebastian said as he continued wrapping my ankle, "The lady here is injured and has just been kidnapped, I'm sure interrogation is not the priority here.
Ciel sighed and nodded. As Sebastian was finishing wrapping my injured ankle, Lizzie suddenly barged into the manor and screamed, "Ciel! Let's have a birthday party!"
