Chapter 2

Bree stood shocked and all she could do in her state was yell.

"KAI! KIT!"

Bree stared in horror as the roof to the mall began to cave and the ground shook violently. Her eyes immediately looked at Mr. And Mrs. Hamasaki, "MR AND MRS HAMASAKI! RUN!!!" she yelled. The parents looked at her in horror as they practically shoved the little girl closer to her. The mother ran but she was too slow as the giant piece of concrete plummeted from the roof. Mrs. Hamasaki desperately threw the infant boy towards the young teen. She miraculously caught him and held the two kids close and used her body as a shield as the sound of a loud "BOOM" rang in there ears along with other noises of the disaster around them.

After a minute or two the dust began to settle around them and the world became silent. Bree checked to make sure the two kids were alright then looked up. She gasped and covered the eyes of the little kids, "Don't look..." she whispered, but all she could do was stare at the limp hand of the father that hung out from beneath the giant concrete slab and the face frozen in worry and fear of the now lifeless mother.

Bree held the small shaking bodies close to her and Kit looked up at her. "M-miss B-Bree? W-what-t j-just ha-hap-ppened!" Kit asked, tears streaming down her face making trails in the dust that had covered it. Bree shakily looked down at her and just pulled her closer to her chest, "It was a very bad earthquake..." she whispered. Kit began to turn her head to look at her mother and father but Bree immediately turned her head away and stood up with Kai in her arms. She began to try and find a way out of the rubble holding on to Kits hand and holding the crying Kai close. Kit went to turn her head once more and her eyes widened in horror before Bree covered her eyes and turned her away from the horrific scene. "Kit... you need to listen to me... don't look..."

Kit became silent and just nodded her head while she clung on to Bree's shirt and shorts in fear and desperation. The sound of an alarm rang throughout the mall and people began shoving past Bree and the kids muttering things like "slow poke..." or "gosh could you move!". People had no emotions whatsoever for what just happened and decided to push down some helpless kids for their own lives instead of helping the others around them. Instead of saying something, like she normally would, Bree was silent. She continued to walk through the mall for a couple more minutes and she saw the exit up a head while a police officer yelled "The exits this way! Please keep calm and keep moving!"

Bree continued to walk with a blank stare clinging on to the two kids until she suddenly heard the officer yell, "You! Come back!". She turned her head curious as to whom he was talking too. "Its Dangerous that way!" he continued as a girl turned her head towards him. Wait, that was the girl from before! But... where was the little kid? the girl continued to walk and the officer ran up to her while yelling "You there! Girl! Come back!". When he got to her he put his hand on her shoulder and said, "You can't go that way! The quake started a fire in that section. Now get out through the west entrance!"

The girl began to speak "B-but but I... I have to t-" she was interrupted by the ground beginning to shake again and she gasped before the police officer said, "a quake..." The ground began to shake uncontrollably again and the officer and girl fell away from each other. Kit screamed and dug herself into Bree while Bree held them both close again and felt the rubble from the roof pelt her back. Suddenly, there was a large crash and everything went still again. The section above where the girl had been had fallen and the girl had been pulled aside by a lady with a brown ponytail.

Bree checked too make sure Kai and Kit were okay and got up to watch the girl and the women. She couldn't hear what they were saying and decided to stay behind to see if she could help in any way. She followed them as they began to call out the name of the boy. "Yuki! Yuki!" The girl called out only stopping to ask passerbys for information. She got to a woman and asked if she had seen her brother and the women said she saw a couple boys in the toy shop.

Bree had a sudden flashback to when she was talking to the parents. She had seen that boy! She had seen Yuki run by the toy shop in the direction of the food-mart! Just as she was about to go and tell the distressed girl she was already off and running in the direction Bree had just came from.

Bree ran and followed her til suddenly the girl was running down a flight of stairs that were in ruins. After the stairway fell Bree ran to the edge to make sure they were okay. She went to say something but soon realized she couldn't. She began to panic and tried making noise but nothing was coming out. She calmed down remembering what happened whenever she inhaled smoke or dust. Her throat becomes to dry and she can't speak. She ran around to the other side where another flight of stairs were and she walked down them. Kai had fallen asleep from exhaustion of crying and kit had remained silent most of the time.

She saw the two seemingly fight over something and the girl ran off with the lady right behind her. She remembered the officer said there was a fire in that direction so she headed in the direction of the toy shop to meet up with them.

This continued for awhile of Bree trying to meet up with the girl and lady until she lost them all together. She decided to leave for the shelter area and wait to see if they found him there.

Bree held the two shivering children close as the rain poured. She tried her best to keep Kai warm as Kit clung onto her shirt. Her eyes looked around at the people that had gathered under the shelter as well. She saw the girl, the woman, and the little boy up ahead and they were talking. She gave a small smile, happy to see that they were okay. They fell silent and were looking at something ahead of them. The woman took out her phone and pulled something up Bree look to her right and saw somebody else doing the same thing. She leaned in asking if she could watch too, the man looked taken a back but nodded.

"To repeat today at 3:45 p.m. approximately 4 hours ago, a massive earthquake occurred centered in the Kanto region. The quake's epicenter was in the northern area of Tokyo bay at a depth of approximately 25 km. The scale of the earth quake is estimated at magnitude 8.0"

"A magnitude of 8..." She whispered. The man nodded "yeah we haven't had one this big since 2009, but even then this one was especially bad... I wonder how many people have died..." He said. The news reporter continued,

"Please be careful of aftershocks and possible tsunamis. Due to the effects of the quake all the emergency services in the city have been halted. According to the Tokyo fire department large-scale fires have broken out in all sections of the city. Residents have been urged to evacuate. If you are evacuating..."

Bree leaned back and stared out at all the fires and began to think. Although she didn't get very far before her thoughts were interrupted, "Bree what did the man mean by people died?" Bree hesitated to answer as the pure child innocence glistened in her eyes. "U-u-um w-well sometimes when you get really hurt or really old you need to go to sleep for a very long time... And um... D-during things like this... Lots of p-people... Get really hurt a-and need to sleep f-for a very l-long time... A-And they c-can't-t wake u-u-up..." Bree said looking away from kit. Kit looked scared, "Bree are you going to go to sleep!?" Bree's heart clenched. "Bree are mommy and daddy going to be okay? You told me not to look at what happened to them... D-did they go to sleep too?! A-a-are you going to go to sleep too Bree?!"

Bree pulled Kit close and hushed her as she began to cry. "Calm down Kit... Every thing is gonna be all right. Hush... I'm not leaving you or Kai, I promise." Bree said stroking Kits hair as she hugged her. "B-but h-how do you know if your not gonna go to sleep too..." Kit asked as she sniffled wiping her nose on her sleeve. "I just know..." Bree whispered then she smiled a big smile and said, "Besides I'm not tired enough to sleep that long! I've got you two to keep me awake anyway!"

Kit laughed a bit before leaning into Bree and falling fast asleep. Bree smiled and placed her head in her lap before realizing that Kai had not been fed this entire time. She looked around and saw a women with a couple of kids around her. Bree carefully removed Kits head from her lap and she gently placed it on a jacket that she had. She jogged down to the lady. This women looks like she'd be kind and help them. She also looked like she knew what she was doing.

Bree reached the women and tapped her on the shoulder. The women turned to her, "Can I help you?" She said with a smile. "Um... Yes.. Uh... Could you tell me where I could get formula or if you...could possibly...help. Its about his feeding time and I can't give him breast milk." Bree tried explaining. "You seem awfully young to have a child" she said. It took Bree a second before she realized what the women said. "Oh! No no no no! Hes not my kid! I was just babysitting him and was returning him to his parents! That was... Until...the earthquake hit...and Um... I'm afraid his mother was... Well, you know..." She didn't want to continue.

The women made an "oh" face and looked at her sympathetically. "I'm sorry, but it's really risky for a women to breastfeed another mothers child. He could get a disease or infection. I can, however, give you this formula." She said bringing out a small tuboware of formula. "I always keep some on me. Do you have a bottle?" She asked Bree.

Bree nodded her head as she took the formula, "Yes, Ma'am, I still have his bottle in my bag, Thank you so much!" Bree said bowing in appreciation. "No problem! And I'm sorry to here about the parents. I assume you know how to make the formula right?" Bree once again nodded but then frowned. "But wait... I can't heat it up." She said slightly bouncing the little baby as he began to wake up from his nap. "You should head to a convenience store and see if they have water and some thing to cook it with, is there anything else I can do for you young miss?" Bree scratched the back of her neck bashfully, "Uhh y-yeah one more thing... While I go to the convenience store could you watch his sister? She's asleep so she shouldn't be much of a problem!" The women nodded her head and Bree handed her Kai so she could run and get Kit.

Once the women was watching Kit ,who was still asleep, Bree headed to the convenience store with Kai in her arms. She heard his stomach growl a little and he started to get fussy and cry. She did her best to calm him down by giving him his pacifier and patting his back. She saw a convenience store up ahead with lots of people surrounding it getting water and food supplies. she looked at the time on her phone and saw it was 6 pm. They were only 2 hours into this nightmare! Bree ran up to a nice looking lady handing out waters and asked her if she had something to heat up his milk as Kai cried. The nice woman nodded her head and directed her inside where there was a microwave that was working in the break room.

Bree expertly prepared him 5 ounces of milk and hated it up. As soon as she was done she thanked the lady and began to feed Kai as she she walked back to the sheltered area. Once back, she sat next to the nice woman and Kit woke up a bit and looked around yawning and then put her head back on Bree's lap as Bree covered her with her jacket. She burped Kai and he spit up a bit. "Uuuugh, thank goodness I have his blanket!" she said with an annoyed look on her face. Kai giggled and began to chew on a teether.

"Tomorrow is gonna be a long day..." Bree said staring off into the rain. She wanted to cry. All she could think of was I'm always so organized, always so mature, I know exactly what to do in every situation! That's what everybody says at least...but...right now? I don't know what to do... Her thoughts wandered wondering how they were going to get through tomorrow. Were they going to be okay? Were there going to be bad aftershocks that cause more things to fall tomorrow? What if Kit ran off and got smashed? What if she didn't know how to comfort the kids in a certain situation? She felt the tears starting to roll down her cheeks and she nearly threw her hands up to wipe them but stopped herself because of the two sleeping children in her lap.

She decided to talk to the women next to her for a bit til all of her kids had fallen asleep. She thanked the women over and over again for her help. "Your a brave kid Bree... You know that? Just keep it up and you'll make it through alright! You should probably get some sleep now because your gonna need all the energy you can get for tomorrow!" The lady said kindly and turned away from Bree to lye down herself. Bree sighed and re-positioned the kids so they were all comfortable on the steps.

Although there were sounds of coughs and phones resonating through the area.

Although the ground was hard, cold, and wet.

Although she could feel the slight tremors of the earth every couple of minutes.

Although she feared Kit would get up and leave.

And although the air was filled with the freezing spray of the rain...

Bree fell into a deep, deep, slumber out of pure exhaustion.
