I knew that Ymir was an impatient individual but I didn't think she would have gone this far. She had threatened all of us a few minutes ago, in such a deranged fashion that I began to question her sanity. She had said that she would fight us all if we neglected to retrieve Christa, even if she injured Eren and I in the process. When asked why, she merely stated Christa was the one that smiled at her and was kind to her, even while knowing what kind of person ymir was. It was understandable, in fact, it was normal to feel this way about someone who has shown you kindess. What I didn't understand was when she said she didn't care about Christa's future, she wanted her, needed her, even if it meant destroying Christa's happiness, Ymir would cage her in and keep her all to herself. It didn't sound like love anymore, it sounded like obsession. The kind of nasty obsession Orochimaru had for Sasuke.
And so here we were, silently contemplating whether or not we should ditch her. Hanging from the trees and staring at her impatiently. Her body was protruding from the back of her titan forms neck as she hung from a nearby tree opposite of ours.
She smiled eerily, gleaming white teeth showing as she spoke. "What...Don't get mad, I do have a plan, I'll fight as well so it will be easier to get away than it is now."
"We can't risk it for Christa now..." Reiner muttered with hot steady breaths.
Ymir's smile faltered. She growled with anger. "So are we gonna fight here and kill ourselves?! Huh?! Just try me!"
Mt ears perked up at the sudden and familiar sound of hooves. They were coming, and from the sound of it, they were already on gears within the forest. My heart surged and my eyes widened. I hoped Levi was alright.
"We don't have time for this, we need to move now, Ymir, you can do what you want but right now my priority is getting Eren out of here, and I can only ask for your help..." Reiner breathed out with determination.
Ymir stayed silent, eyes shut and brows furrowed as she thought deeply. "Go ahead, I will stay behind as a distraction." She muttered after a long moment of silence and the sound of rustling leaves.
Reiner shook his head. "No way we can't trust you, how do I know you wont just run off..."
She smiled slyly at him then. "You don't."
I could see the veins of Reiner's neck rising. He was getting fed up with Ymir. "Don't linger for long, we'll be waiting." He muttered in agreement, although the tone of complete defeat was evident in his voice. He wasn't very happy with this idea but we had no other choice.
"Don't linger for long yourself, the clock is ticking." Ymir said with a tone of glee. She loved having things go her way, it was obvious.
Bertholdt, who was hesitant at first, jumped ahead, making me gasp and hold on to his shoulders tightly with the sudden movement that brought the cold wind against my face. It wasn't raining anymore but it was cold as hell. Reiner followed with a grunt, not bothering to look back at the small titan that clung to the trees as support from tumbling down into the king sized zombies.
"Are you sure about leaving her behind with that kind of task?" I said outloud over the sound of beating wind.
"I have to..." Reiner spoke out in reply, face hard and unreadable."I'm not an idiot, she stayed behind to get Christa, not as a distraction, we have to wait for her once she reaches the end of the forest...actually, we're already here."
We stopped at a nearby branch so suddenly that my head bobbed with the impact of Bertholdt's feet with the branch, making my chin hit against his head. Reiner set Eren down gently so Bertholdt could hold him, and I got off of the tall mans back shakily. We were at the end of the forest...I could see the wide open space of greenery in front of me.
"She's coming Reiner!" Bertholdt yelled. My head snapped towards the direction of his stare. I could see her. Ymir's titan form swinging from tree to tree with such speed that it was hard to keep track of her form. She was coming towards us fast.
"I know! Get ready!" Reiner hopped off the branch with his hand in his mouth as blood fell over the skin like rainy droplets of water on a winter day. He was going to turn. My mind raced. I thought about turning around and hopping back towards the others with speed equal to Ymir's. They wouldn't risk going back for me. But Eren...Eren was dead asleep and tied up against Bertholdts arms. I couldn't leave him. And I had less than a milisecond of fighting Bertholdt for him until Reiner turned. I couldn't run. Not while leaving behind the person that saved my life and stood up for me on the second day of me being stranded here.
So when Reiner's titan form landed on the ground with a godly bolt and quake, I followed Bertholdts example. I jumped after him and we both fell upon the armored titans shoulders, stumbling a bit at the process, Bertholdt more so than me from having Eren tied to his back. Reiner stood, and soon enough, Ymirs titan form leaped from the trees and onto his back as well, like a monkey leaping towards a humans arms. She hung on perfectly. I held on tightly as the titan started to run, moving with a fast pace and sending small quakes to erupt from the heavy footsteps it made. All I could do was look back between my swirling pink locks. The scouting legion members were all standing along the branches, looking ahead with such hopelessness, unable to do a thing. Although I couldn't see Levi from the distance, I could only imagine his expression at the sight of us running further away from him, beyond his reach.
...
She was slipping away through his fingers dammit. He couldn't leave her damn side for a second. She was leaving him...he couldn't understand why. He refused to believe it was for traitorous reasons. The two bastards that held Eren captive must have somehow convinced her to follow. He didn't give two shits about Ymir, but Sakura of all people leaving with the enemy willingly? He knew something was up...something had to be. If she turned out to be a traitor he would have a mental breakdown. He would be shattered...Humanities most powerful soldier would be reduced to nothing.
Even as they followed on the horses, the armored titan was faster. It was then that Levi's higher up and long time friend shouted loudly to the squads. "Everyone forget about fighting! Just chase the armored titan and let the other titans follow!"
It was an odd request, dangerous even, but Levi knew it was a good idea. Using titans to fight titans. He knew what Erwin was thinking even before the man himself realized it himself. Everyone turned sharply at Erwins request, reluctantly.
"Erwin you monster! Are you planning on using us as decoys again?!" The leader of the police squad shouted angrily. Levi grunted.
"That is not my intent!" Erwin shouted back in reply. "The enemy is running away with Eren and Sakura! They must be stopped at all costs, just trust me!" Levi thought that his voice sounded a little shaky. It wasn't like Erwin be nervous, and that made Levi himself a little nervous.
Jean, who was riding alongside Mikasa and Armin had hope. "We can catch up to his speed!"
"But if the armored titan were to remove the hardened skin from his joint areas, he should be able to move faster, if he didn't do that he probably wouldn't be able to run long distances but...at this rate even if we catch up we wont be able to stop him!" Armin shouted after Jean, long blonde hair swaying back with the force of the winter wind. Levi thought it made him look like a girl, the boy needed a cut.
Mikasa gritted her teeth in anger. "No...we'll manage this time." She spat, anger matching Levi's. "I will definitely kill them."
"And if she gets in our way, there will be no exceptions." Levi spoke out, dark eyes locking with Mikasa's. They both nodded. Levi knew if someone was going to rescue the two, it would be them. After all...they shared the same goal, and the same feelings for the captives. They rode on, determined and filled with anger.
...
The wind was seriously getting on my nerves. Not only that...there was a horde of titans chasing the scouting legion troops, who were chasing us, making me worried sick to my stomach. Levi was among them, and worst case scenarios played in my mind endlessly, tormenting me with visions of Levi's limps being pulled off and eaten. I was going to unleash hell if one of the giants grabbed even one person. I couldn't see who was who, but there was always the chance it could be Levi. That small chance was enough.
I turned at the sudden shifting of Ymir's body. The titan was spitting out Christa in her hand, and I grimaced as the petite landed on the palm of Ymir's hand, spit and hot sweat clinging to her body and golden locks like spiderweb.
"Christa!" I jumped slightly as Bertholdt shouted the girls name. She was unconscious, but as Ymir shook her gently, I could see the girl frown and cough. Her eyes opened suddenly, displaying those blue orbs that reminded me of narutos. She struggled in the giants grasp, only to be held tighter as Ymir emerged once again from the titans back neck. The dark skinned girl panted heavily.
"Ymir!" Christa yelled in confusion. Her sky blue eyes skimmed her surroundings, stopping at Eren's tied up body. "Ymir what is this?! We came here to rescue you!"
Ymir coughed at the steam rising from around her. "You didn't need to do that! Sorry for swallowing you back there...I imagine you're mad..." She muttered. I could hear the regret in her voice. Ymir felt bad about it. She rose her head to meet the blondes eyes. "I'm going along with Bertholdt and Reiner, you too Christa, come with me!"
The girl blinked her eyes, disbelieving what she was hearing. "Wha?"
"There is no future for us here." Ymir pressed. "There are no people outside the walls that will say you should never have been born."
Christa shook her head, becoming agitated. "Of course not! Titans are too busy trying to eat us!" She barked.
"Everyone! Everyone has a fault or two! If you can just ignore that bit then you will see they aren't so bad!" Ymir shouted back. I cringed. Was Ymir listening to herself? She was implying we ignore the titans and live out here...easy for her to say, Christa had no titan abilities. She was asking to much of the petite.
The blonde stared at me and I had to look away. "Ymir, what you're doing and what you're saying, it doesn't make sense at all! As I thought, you and Sakura are being threatened by Reiner and Bertholdt right?"
Ymir looked down with a frown.
"Just the opposite." Bertholdt said outloud.
"Yeah...I'm here because I refuse to leave Eren's side, Ymir is here of her own free will." I muttered.
Christa shook her head, not wanting to believe. "No...That's not right! Right Ymir? Right?" She stared at the brunette imploringly. When Ymir said nothing, Christa went on. "I'll fight together with you! Even though there are things you can't tell me, I'm on your side!"
Ymir's head shot up at Christa's words and she gave the blonde a sad look, as if she wanted to cry. I thought it was pretty, how much Christa cared for the rude and impossible woman.
"Ymir, just let her go! The scouting legion is already catching up!" Bertholdt shouted.
"Release me Ymir!" Christa begged. The brunette shut her eyes with clenched teeth. She was having a mental battle with herself.
"I can't! She stared at her in anticipation. "Historia..." Ymir whispered. "The reason I snatched you was to save myself." Her expression looked pained as she spoke. "Long ago...I stole the titans power from comrades of these guys. Their power is absolute, I'm not safe anywhere be it beyond or inside the walls, If I handed you over to them, these guys said that they would overlook my offense, you're an important person from the wall cult that knows it's secrets after all..."
Christa and I stared at Ymir as if she were a stranger. She had met these guys before...just what was her history?
"I'm scared of dying, I want to be saved. Even though I pathetically said it was all for your sake, in reality it was all for mine, please Christa, please help me!" Ymir pleaded. This was the first time I had seen her do such a thing. I wasn't sure how to feel.
After a long moment of silence, Christa spoke with such sincerity, it made Ymir stop her scared whining altogether. "I told you didn't I Ymir? I'm on your side." The girl said with a tearful smile.
I huffed. Things were getting complicated. Christa could stay with Ymir as long as she wanted, but I wasn't going to wait around. I was silently plotting how to untie Eren from Bertholdt's back. My hands lingered loosely around his feet. If I was careful, I could untie his feet without anyone noticing. Looking around, I made sure Ymir and Bertholdt were fixated on Christa's sudden crying. I seized the opportunity and reached her a leg, ready to untie the knots binding it to the other until I saw it. Eren's eyes were slowly opening. We stared at each other in surprise. He shook violently, eyes widened in panic and confusion.
"Shh Eren its okay!" I exclaimed, trying to calm him down. It was already too late. Bertholdt noticed and he turned sharply to glance at Eren. My friend tried to scream, spit flying off of the gag that was put into his mouth and I stood, noticing that wires were shooting up, digging into Reiner's body. The scouting legion had caught up.
"Sakuraaa!" My head turned at the familiar voice. Green eyes bristled and gleamed with joy as Levi flew towards me. Below him, I could see everyone else struggling to keep up with the horses, matching Reiner's pace.
"Levi!" I shouted happily. He was okay after all. I moved aside to allow him space to land as he shot a second wire near Eren, which made the boy scream in frustration and squirm some more, much to Bertholdt's dismay. My happiness was short lived, because Ymir's hand came down on the wire and she flung it off of Reiner's neck. With a snap, the wire gave way and I saw Levi's eyes widen in surprise as he fell downward.
"Nooooo!" I screamed in horror, hands raised creating a kage bunshin signal. Puffs of smoke erupted into the air as a clone of myself rushed forward, arms wrapping around the falling mans torso. She twisted, pink locks flying as she fell along side Levi onto the grass. It was enough to block the impact of the fall. Although the air was knocked out of his lungs, he was okay. The clone evaporated into the air as she blocked the fall. I frowned with worry. Kage bunshin wasn't my specialty. Unlike Naruto, my clones weren't as long lasting. Even so it was enough.
Spinning around, I grabbed onto Eren and pulled. "Let him go!" I shouted at Bertholdt, who was trying to kick me away.
We both stopped our fighting when a sudden swoosh made its way around us. It was another set of wires. A figure rose above us with ninja-like speed, spinning and slashing at Ymir's left eye. Blood gushed out of the large wound, splattering across the three of us. I lost my footing and tumbled, grabbing onto a slab of Reiner's armor for dear life. The figure stopped just short of the now screaming Ymir, and rushed at Bertholdt. It was Mikasa.
"Reiner!" Bertholdt shouted. The armored titan responded to Bertholdts cries by wrapping him around his hand as Mikasa slashed against it. Her blades were useless against the armor. She gritted her teeth in frustration.
I had to do something. Ymir was too busy screaming over her lost eye to stop me. Pumping chakra into my feet, I pulled myself up and stood on Reiner's shoulder steadily, using my chakra to hold me in place. I ignored the rushing wind blowing against my squinting eyes as I ran to the front where Bertholdt was balled up in Reiner's hand.
"Mikasa!" I shouted, earning the girls attention. "That wont work! You have to go for his joints!"
"I know that but I can't risk bringing him down with Eren trapped in there!" She shouted back. Her eyes widened and she pointed behind me. "Look out!" She screamed.
Not turning back, I jumped high into the air, dodging Ymir's hard swap. She was going to crush me against Reiner's shoulder. The bitch. Mikasa backed off too, trying to think of something quick. I landed on the top of Reiners head while Mikasa landed just below it. We looked at each other. Silently agreeing to team up against Ymir. She was blind from one eye she had a disadvantage. Pumping Chakra into my right fist, I crouched, getting ready to deal real damage. Until Christa popped out from behind Ymir's hair. The girl was standing above said titans head, tiny arms raised in a defensive gesture.
"Wait! Mikasa! Sakura! Don't hurt Ymir please!" She pleaded between pants.
Mikasa frowned. "Well that really depends on Ymir now doesn't it? I'm killing anyone who gets in my way! What are you going to do? Choose..." She spat.
"Wait!" Christa insisted. She just wouldn't give up. It made me feel sorry for her. I would do anything to protect Levi...just as she was willing to protect Ymir. "Ymir is doing this because she has no choice! If she doesn't comply, then they will kill her!"
Mikasa's expression looked solemn. "There is a limit to the lives I can care about...and that has already been decided six years ago, so...asking me for compassion is useless, after all, I have no heart or time to spare."
Christa gasped, gazing into Mikasa's stone eyes with a defeated look. A piercing scream erupted into the air as Ymir screeched angrily. Mikasa and I braced ourselves. "Stop it Ymir! Calm down, just stay still." Christa exclaimed. The titan stopped and stared up at the petite with those beady eyes. Mesmerized. It was amazing the kind of effect Christa had on her.
My eyes tore themselves away from the two at the sound of wired digging into Reiner's skin. Armin hopped on, along with Connie and Jean. "Eren is trapped inside his hand with Bertholdt!"I shouted, pointing, then my eyes widened at the sight of Levi. He landed on Reiner's shoulder elegantly, despite having fallen from such a great height. My clone did a great job.
"We have to get Eren out of there!" Mikasa shouted over me, stopping at the sight of me running towards the man I was head over heels for. My heart surged as I hugged him briefly. He stiffened, then patted my hair gently, giving me a knowing look. We couldn't be too touchy in public after all...but I didn't care. He was here and that's all that mattered.
"Why?" He asked, with confusion and pain. It alarmed me so much that I had to take a step back. To my utter horror, I understood the question. Levi thought I had betrayed them.
"It's not what you think! I had no choice! I was going to find a way to take Eren when I had the opportunity! I couldn't leave him!" I blurted out in panic. He had to believe me, he had to.
His stiff shoulders relaxed. "I know, I just needed to hear it from you." He whispered. then frowned and looked away with averted eyes. "Brat..." He muttered.
I tried hard not to laugh. He was upset with himself at having doubted me. He must have been worried sick. "I'm sorry." I muttered in apology.
He eyed me momentarily. "It's not your fault, what of Ymir?" He asked, glancing at the now calm titan.
"She's here because she has no choice too, Christa said they would kill her if she didn't comply." I said.
Levi nodded and walked over to the group that had formed along Reiner's clamped hand above his collar bone. It seemed he was trying to hide his sensitive skin while keeping Eren hostage at the same time. I stared as Mikasa banged on the hand. "Hey! Birtholdt! Give him back!" She screeched angrily. I gripped Levi's back.
"What do we do?" I asked.
He thought for a moment, and was about to speak but was cut off by Connies sudden shouts. "Hey Reiner! It's all a lie right?! All those things you did was just to fool around with us right?! That's cruel!"
My heart ached for him. I knew exactly how he felt. The expression on his face was like my own when Sasuke betrayed us. Part of me refused to believe it. Tho other part cried with sorrow and regret. That is why I joined in on Connies yells. "Yeah!" I hissed out. "How could you betray the people that care about you?!"
We watched Reiners expressionless titan face, eager for an answer that we knew wouldn't come. "Are you guys really going to run away like this? Cmon guys...Weren't we comrades that shared hardships under the same roof? Three years back?" Connie's expression was heartbreaking. "Was it a lie? What night when we all pledged to become old men, surviving and drinking together, was it all a lie?"
Mikasa butted in before Connie could go any further. "That doesn't matter! Just concentrate on cutting their necks." She breathed out from her perch on Reiners top neck. "If you hesitate even for a second, we wont be able to get Eren back. they are a plague apon mankind, and that is all we need to know." She finished.
Everyone flinched at the sudden screech that came from within the armored hand. Bertholdt's voice sounded as full of pain as Connie's. "Who...Who do you think actually wants to kill people?!"
The question took everyone by surprise and we stared wide eyed. What exactly did he mean by that? "Who want's to do something like this? Who would want to do this?! Being hated by people...Even if we were killed we only did what was natural, what is done cant be undone, but we...couldn't be forgiven...only the time that we were acting as soldiers was...enjoyable. It wasn't a lie Connie! Not everything was a lie!" Bertholdt said between the cracks of the hand that held him. "I really did think of us as comrades! We have no way to apologize but somebody...please, somebody just find us..."
I could tell he was crying by then but what he was saying sounded like a bunch of babbling now. Everyone stayed silent for a moment, contemplating what to do next. Until Mikasa spoke up. "Bertholdt...give Eren back."
"I can't." Was his reply. "Somebody has to do it."
I sighed. "I'm going to have to turn to force him to give Eren bac-" I was stopped short by another shout below us, making everyone turn their attention down towards the man that cut me off. It was that blonde man who was particularly friendly with Eren and Mikasa.
"Get away from there guys!" He shouted from his perch on the running horse he rode. With everything that was happening up here, I had completely forgotten about the troops that were following us. We stared at the man in confusion. "I can't believe he's trying to do this! Erwin!" He shouted in worry. He was pointing onwards, and our heads followed his fingers. I knew then why I had forgotten about the troops. They weren't present a minute ago because they were busy leading the giant hordes of titans around the open field and directly in front of us. If Reiner kept running, we were going to collide with them.
"You guys! Jump off at once!" The blonde man shouted again. Everyone did so without hesitation, using the gears to fly off of Reiners shoulders like scared flies.
My knees buckled as Levi grabbed on to my waist, and pulled me off my feet, carrying me bridal style. "What are you doing?!" I shouted.
"Getting you off!" He shouted back, steadying himself to use the gear to hop off as well.
"No! What about Eren!" I hissed, squirming in Levi's grasp, who protested. Eren was still inside Reiners hand dammit!
"He'll be fine, right now, you're more important!" He shouted back. Without another word, he rose high into the air, and I felt my stomach surge with the sudden movement.
Since there was double the weight on the gear, he struggled hard to keep his balance, and couldn't land on a horse like Mikasa. He skidded on his feet along with Jean and Armin, the two who were most horrible at using the gear. With a grunt, Levi let go of me and set me on my feet gently, as if I was a fragile glass vase that would break if dropped. Typical men...
"What now?" I spoke out, watching as he stopped a horse and hopped on it, lending me a hand to ride behind him. I slid it into his easily and let myself be pulled up. Wrapping my arms around his chest, I leaned against him, breathing the familiar scent of mint and wine as the horse rode ahead.
"We follow up with Erwin." He replied flatly.
"Everyone spread out! Disperse from the titans!" Erwin shouted. I watched as horses rode to the sides, letting the armored titan go head to head with the other titans. Since Reiner was bigger, their attention was fixated on him. I bit my lip nervously as I watched the collision. With a sudden slam, Reiner sped up and tackled the horde, sending a great deal of them flying back. Reiner was strong...really strong. This wasn't the outcome the scouting legion was hoping for. I could tell by their gasps.
I could see Ymir holding on for dear life like a rag doll, much to my amusement. It was mean, but she looked rather funny. I wondered how long she could hold until the titans caught up. Then, to my utter surprise and horror, I watched as a titan reached out for Christa, and flinched when a peircing scream erupted into the air. "Historiaa!"
It was Ymir's titan form. It spoke out as she slashed at the offending titans hand, slapping it away from Christa. Reiner was struggling now, with the many titans that started clinging to his body like parasites. They had him completely in their grip, chewing on his head as if he were a snack. Not even Ymir could fend them off, but she was trying. All we could do was stare as we rode around the pile that was made up of the man eating titans.
I spotted Erwin as he followed up towards us, handsome face shining in the sun as he stared ahead at the carnage. "What is this...is this hell?" I heard Jean mutter.
"No...this is the beginning." Erwin stated with confidence. He rose his arm, holding a sword tightly. "All units charge! Sakura, change into your titan form and lead the way, protect us!"
I could feel Levi stiffen, but remained silent. I nodded, I knew what I had to do.
"A-are you sure?" Jean muttered reluctantly.
Erwin turned to him. "The fate of mankind's existence will be decided by this moment! Without Eren, the future where mankind can inhabit this earth will never come!" Erwin shouted.
Jean nodded. He understood. I hopped off of the horse, letting go of Levi with hesitation. I thought I heard him mutter something a bit incoherent. It sounded like don't die. I huffed in annoyance. I hated that he was protective, but it only meant that he cared.
"I won't!" I shouted as I ran at full speed in front of the horses, biting my thumb with force and focusing on my goal. Save Eren at all costs.
