I had a major headache when I awoke, and my body felt freezing cold. The lamp light was on to a dim glimmer and I could hear voices to my left. Turning my head slowly, I could see Armin, sporting a white collar button shirt with blue trousers, seated on the end of Erens bed with Mikasa, who wore a baby blue collar shirt and white pants, seated beside it on a chair. Jean wore a brown shirt with his white pants, he was leaning casually on the wall, looking down with a somber face. I must have been back in my room, my familiar covers were pulled just below my collar bone. I moved to sit up slowly and grimaced as pain shot through my head, was it the blow that Annie dealt onto me? It wasn't even my real body but still, it must have affected me in some way. I needed some painkillers.
Armin noticed me first. "Sakura! How are you feeling? you suddenly collapsed...you had us all worried."
"Did I?" I tried to recall my passing out, but it was a little bit fuzzy. I did, however remember the shock of seeing the walled in titan. It seemed this whole city had a hidden mystery all on its own. My hand shot up to caress my head slowly and pumped healing chakra into it. Despite not having large chakra reserves, the rest helped me regain some.
"So I guess it's safe to say that the kings summon for Sakura and Eren is canceled." Jean muttered.
I looked down at my form before getting up. Someone had taken off my boots and jacket, along with my belts. They now resided on top of my drawer, neatly folded. Only the clean freak would take time to fold clothes now of all times. I made my way towards them, my bare feet made small stepping sounds on the underground floor. When I got close enough, I could see that Eren was still asleep. His covers were pulled up to his neck, and there was a tray with warm water and a folded cloth on his drawer. He was a bit worse off than me apparently.
"Yes." Armin answered Jeans reply solemnly, pulling his knees up to his chest.
"But that pales in comparison to all the other things that happened. Annie really turned out to be that female titan, wrecking havoc on the town, And turning herself into the sleeping beauty right after... and then to sum it all up, there are colossal titans inside the walls..." Jean broke off, eyes glazed as his mind swirled.
"Yes." Armin answered again. "They've been standing inside the wall for at least 100 years, and maybe...they are all going to decide to take a walk soon, all at once." He shuddered, eyes wide with fear and worry.
Jean broke into laughter. "Hahahaha! That's a joke right? That was a good one Armin!" He ruffled the blondes hair, attempting to make him laugh too, but his own smile faltered when he saw Armin was serious.
"Shh Jean, keep your voice down." Mikasa held a finger to her lips at him, for Eren's sake.
"Oh yeah, sorry..." He muttered under his breath with a slight blush. It didn't go undetected.
"You know, I never could determine how the walls were built in the first place, and there are no brick joints, or traces of peeling, or other normal things like that...I wonder if it was made by using the titans hardening ability, that ability could have a lot of applications, just like Annie's crystal shield thing." Armin trailed off.
My eyebrow rose. " It's been one hundred years and you just now notice you don't know how the walls were built?" I asked unbelievably. That couldn't be right...
"Well...no one really questioned it...wait, but if titans are really in that wall using their powers to build it, then that means...we were always being protected from titans, by titans." Armin breathed slowly. I frowned. Just what kind of weird conspiracy was this?
Jean stared down at Armin, eyes dead serious. "Is that a joke too? Cause it ain't funny." Mikasa squirmed in her seat, her face held a far away expression.
The door to the room suddenly opened and a man baring the survey corps uniform popped in. "Armin, come with me, the commander wants you in the meeting right now."
The blonde boy snatched his worn shoes quickly and hopped off the bed to put them on. "Coming!"
"Well we should head outside too, being in this damp underground room for too long is enough to depress anyone." Jean yawned lazily and made his way out the door but stopped to glance at me. "It's seven thirty five you know, people are already in the kitchen, and Hanji was looking for you, said your clothes were ready?"
I blinked several times. So I was asleep the whole afternoon and night..."Oh, right! thanks for informing me." I quickly snatched my boots and put them on before heading towards Armin and the man holding the door open for us.
Jean glanced back at Mikasa. "Mikasa? You should come to the meeting too, you can fetch something to eat with Sakura first and then join us."
The girl shook her head. "No, I would rather stay here." She whispered quietly. Her voice sounded so somber...was she feeling sorry for Eren? It didn't really hurt getting knocked out like that, apart from the headache, which was already fading thanks to my self healing.
"I see, good day then." Jean forced a smile before walking out with me in tow. Armin managed a friendly smile her way before departing but she didn't return it. The door closed, leaving her alone with the unconscious boy. I walked along side Jean and Armin.
"So where is Hanji right now? I really want my old clothes back..." I spoke to Jean.
He looked down on me for a while before replying. "Right now she's with Levi deep underground, yes deeper than here, with Annie." I stayed silent for a while.
"Where's that at?"
He thought for a moment, then sighed. "You want me to take you?"
I nodded. "Please."
He halted and turned to Armin and the man. "I'm going to the meeting later, I'm going to escort her to Hanji's domain." They nodded and continued to walk ahead without us. We began walking down another corridor that was lit by a few dim lamps. It was really dark down here, and it seemed like it would be easy to get lost. I was glad Jean volunteered to escort me.
"Oh yeah, here." Jean reached into his pocket and took out a wad of rolled up green paper. I took it slowly, examining the item. "It's three hundred dollars in American money for the scroll, hopefully that's enough?"
I frowned. "That's actually too much, but i'm not complaining, It's in my drawer right now, I can give it to you later." I grinned at him and pocketed the cash. "You're um...not going to really use it for uh...THAT are you?"
He snorted and I could see an amused gleam in his eyes, despite the lack of light. "I was only trying to lighten the mood, you know...so many of us died for nothing. Even so, being depressed all the time will get us nowhere, except make things worse, I learned that if you're going to survive in this world, you can't really keep looking back and be engulfed in your emotions, you have to keep going without letting them get in the way. Haven't you noticed how stoic our leaders are? Maybe that's what helps them survive. They know it all, they lived it, and they probably learned it the hard way." He sucked in a deep breath. "I wanted the easy way out, join the military police and live the good life...I didn't want to fight, but even people like me can change..."
" Anyone can change, if they want to." I muttered. I contemplated Jeans words silently. Was that why Levi never seemed to smile or show strong feelings of affection towards anyone? It made sense...but it sounded sad. "I suppose you're right." I murmured. We made a turn and came across a half opened door with stairs leading downwards.
"Watch your step." Jean said, his voice echoing down the corridor. We made our way down the stairs silently, our feet tapped against the surface of the stairs we we descended them.
"Why is this place full of tunnels?" I asked lowly. Jean shrugged.
"Because they are barely constructing I guess, Erwin's idea, he wants to build a fort here."
"I see." I saw a small passage farther down to my left and turned, Jean followed. I could hear a distant hum in the near darkness and a small wave of claustrophobia gripped me. Just how far down were we? All I saw around me was dirt and stone smoothed out to form walls. I tried not to think about a sudden earthquake happening while I was down here.
"Over here." Jean murmured as he made his way towards a hidden door. He opened it and we crossed the entrance. I saw a few people in their uniforms scattered about. Hanji was standing beside the large obvious crystal that was wrapped in ropes and bound to the wall. Annie. I made my way to Hanji quietly while Jean left, closing the door behind him.
"Hanji?"
She turned to me quickly with wide eyes. "Oh, Sakura, you startled me, how did you get down here?" She asked in a surprised voice. I smiled.
"Jean brought me here, he said you had my clothes ready?"
"Oh I do, but they're in my room, since i'm terribly busy at the moment you can go get them if you want, it's above ground by the office section, just pass through the corridor to your right and go up the stairs, you remember where the offices are right? you went to Erwin's before."
I thought for a second. Hanji was just going to let me into her room like that? Well...it was alright with me. "Yeah, I remember seeing Levi's office going there."
"CORPORAL" the sudden voice beside me made me jump. I turned to see Levi sporting dark clothes. He had his arms crossed and stared into the crystal with a blank expression.
"Oh, I didn't see you there." I muttered, stumbling back. He looked down at me with a bored gaze. I felt a small flush sweep through me as I briefly remembered him holding me as I was cut out of my titan form, but I quickly brushed that thought away.
"How are you feeling? You fainted." His voice held slight concern.
"I'm fine...I healed myself so..." I gasped as I remembered Erwin's injury during the Annie incident. "Oh that's right! Erwin is hurt, where is he?"
Levi huffed, closing his eyes. "He's in a meeting at the moment, didn't even bother to go to the infirmary because of the sudden summons from the court."
I blinked. Of course, Armin was called too...it made sense for Armin to be needed, he was the one who suspected Annie first. "I see, well i'll be going then, wait, a lot of people aren't wearing their uniforms, does that mean a day off?" I asked hopefully.
He nodded, to my joy. "Only for today and tomorrow, we are to clean up the mess that the fight caused in wall Sina afterwards." I grinned. It sucked that we had to clean up eventually, but two days off? I had time to experiment with the scrolls. I glanced quickly at the crystalized blonde.
"How long will she be held here?" I asked.
"As long as it takes, even if she thaws out and tries to transform, it won't work, not when she's this deep underground." Levi responded in a husky tone. Hanji nodded, glaring at the girl.
"Well I better get going, thanks for having my clothes washed Hanji, next time, can you show me the laundry room? I would like to wash for myself." I stated.
"Of course, but another time." She said with a grin. I bid them farewell before heading outside the door and closing it behind me. My foot steps echoed across the hallway as I made my way towards the stairs and sprinted up, slightly panting in the process. I opened the door once I got to the top and looked around the hallway. Which way did I come from again? There were exactly three hallways that led here. I stayed still, listening to the eerie underground hum, then groaned. Jean should have waited for me. I had no other choice but to pick a hallway. I chose left, my boots scraped against the ground as I ventured on. The humming and slight echo of my boots were making me nervous so I decided to whistle a tune. It helped in easing my odd nervousness. I kept walking in a steady pace, my voice carrying throughout the hallway. It was just my luck to get lost down here...but I would come across my room eventually, or the cell bars that Eren and I were held in. I would at least have some clue as to where I was then. Even so, the tunnel seemed endless as I walked on, it was like the walls were stretching. I sighed heavily and slumped my shoulders.
"Great...just great." I murmured silently, then froze. I stood quietly in the middle of the corridor, staring behind me and into the semi darkness. The dim lights weren't enough to fully illuminate the other end of the tunnel as I strained my ears to listen. I could have sworn that I heard faint foot steps behind me. But they stopped now...was it my imagination? Unerved, I continued walking, quietly this time to hear better. Why was I paranoid? It wasn't like other people couldn't be down here.
'If it was merely just someone else then why did they stop when you stopped' My inner voice whispered. I bit my lip. It was only my imagination, nothing more. I started to whistle again but stopped when I heard it again. Faint, heavy footsteps behind me. I ran, my heart was beating so fast I could hear it. The footsteps grew closer, whoever or whatever was behind me, started running too. I turned a corner sharply and gave a small scream as the tip of my foot got caught in a dent on the floor. I fell down on my stomach, scraping my hands in the process. The footsteps stopped, and a hand lay on my shoulder gently.
"Sakura? Are you okay?"
I looked up to see Bertholdt standing over me with a concerned look on his face, and quickly stood up, embarrassed and angry with myself for being paranoid over nothing. It was only Bertholdt.
"Y-yeah, sorry, I um, wanted to get outside faster, I have something important I must do." I lied sheepishly. He stared as I dusted my pants. They got slightly dirty when I tripped. He continued to stare, it was making me uncomfortable.
"Are you lost?" He asked, the corner of his lip curled up slightly. I looked down in defeat. I just couldn't fool him.
"Yeah."
"Would you like me to take you back up?" He offered. I nodded. Might as well, I was lucky to have found someone else down here, even if it was under embarrassing circumstances. He led me towards the opposite direction I came from. I could see his tall frame in the near darkness. He was taller than Erwin, and that was pretty damn tall. How did he manage to be quiet while I wandered over here? Was he purposefully following me? The thought was creepy.
"Where were you going?" I asked, deciding to probe. He shrugged.
"Nowhere in particular, I wanted to see Annie, she was my teammate you know, then I saw you wander over here."
My eyebrow rose. "You were in Annie's squad?"
"Yeah, it's a shock that she turned out to be a spy." His voice sounded odd, a little out of place. But I shook it off.
" Oh that's right, I was told that you were in her group, along with Marco, didn't she seem off, you know, suspicious?"
He shook his head. "Not really, she was always grumpy and silent, she kept to herself."
We came across the door I emerged from not so long ago after a few minutes of silent walking, and took the center tunnel. "They should put up directions or a map, or something." I mumbled. It would make life so much easier.
"I think they're planning on doing that." He said. We slowed down once we saw bright light by the end of the tunnel. I ran forwards and stopped in the end of the hallway, eyeing the brighter lights on the ceiling.
"Awesome! I can see my room now, thanks a bunch!" I shouted to him as he emerged from the tunnel.
"You shouldn't run, you might fall again." He commented, studying my face. I huffed and scratched my head.
"Don't remind me of that." I said with a half smile. He stared for a moment then smiled himself.
"Want me to accompany you to wherever your going?" He asked.
"No thank you, you did enough, see you!" I gave a small wave and departed quickly, scrambling to the far left side of the hallway to get out. I wanted to get my clothes first and then get something to eat. I climbed up the stairs and opened the door to the cafeteria. People were already seated down and eating, It was quite noisy. I caught sight of Ymir coming towards me and inwardly groaned. If she was going to cling to me again, I was going to have to elbow her. She didn't however. She merely stood in front of me with a smile.
"You're awake! Good, good, we wanted to talk to you, come." She grabbed my arm and led me towards the far end of the room. She seated me on a table beside Sasha and Christa. "Wait here while I go get you something to eat."
"Okay..." I murmered. Sasha was already munching on her breakfast hungrily, just like always. Christa sat opposite of me with a polite smile.
"Goodmorning." She greeted with a soft voice. It reminded me alot of Hinata.
"Goodmorning, what's with Ymir? She's being really hospitable all of a sudden." I said, looking back to watch her fill a bowl of what appeared to be cerial and a loaf of sweet bread.
"She wants to convince you to come swimming with us tomorrow. "
"Oh?" I stated.
Sasha swallowed what was left of the bread in her mouth. " We do it frequently, Mikasa joins us sometimes, Annie never bothered, It's this small lake beyond the small forest. That place is always deserted because there's no town set up there, just empty roads and a bunch of trees, the water is always warm in the afternoon."
"How far is it?" I asked.
Ymir came and set my plate down in front of me with my sweet bread beside it. "Not that far, we use the horses to get there."
"I see, but I have no swimming attire." I exclaimed. I was supposed be productive and experiment with the scrolls...not go out and have fun...as tempting as it sounded.
"None of us do, just go in your bra and underwear." Ymir chided with a grin. I shuddered. I wasn't sure if Ymir was a lesbian or just acted like one to be funny, but I didn't feel comfortable at all with her.
"I-ill think about it." I stuttered. "Wait, what If someone see's us?" I took a spoonful of cereal in my mouth and chewed.
"They won't, no one but us knows about that place, c'mon, ." Ymir drawled.
"So your coming? It's better with more people." Sasha waited for my answer. I sighed. It would only be for a short while.
"I suppose so, but I won't stay long." I warned.
"Awesome! we'll meet in the horses stables in the afternoon first thing tomorrow." Ymir winked. I nodded and took another spoonful of my cerial before grabbing the bread and getting up.
"Yeah, I gotta go, Sasha you can have my food." I pushed the plate towards her. She smiled wide, her eyes lighting up as she took it.
"My goddess! You have spared my life with your graciousness! Thank you!" She squealed.
I deadpanned. "Ahhh...your welcome?" It was no secret that Sasha was a food addict. She ate like she was starved for weeks. I waved at Ymir and Christa, then went outside and looked around. Today was pretty nice, there were hardly any people around, and the weather was a bit warmer than yesterday. I smoothed out my white collar shirt while I made my way around the building, gobbling down my bread. The fallen leaves crunched under my boot as I walked. There was a door to the side of the wall...It must have been the entrance. I went to Erwin's quarters in another route but since I didn't want to go through the trouble of finding it, this way seemed easier. I opened the enterance and stepped in, letting a small gush of air inside. The hallway was empty, save for someone seated on a bench reading a paper. I walked past him. I saw the door to Levi's office again and glanced inside quickly while I walked. The lights were off so I couldn't see much, but I did see a big glass drawer holding different glass bottles of liquor. Did Levi like to drink? What kind of liquor did he perfer? I shook my head. Why was it my business...It wasn't like me to suddenly want to know everything about him...Jeez what was wrong with me? I turned right and saw stairs leading upwards. I moved to climb them quickly, taking two steps at a time. After the fourth set of stairs, I could see a couple doors displayed across the wall in the corridor I was at.
"Great...Hanji didn't tell me which door was hers..." I grumbled, walking over to the second one to my right. I opened it slowly and peeked inside. It was really clean and tidy. The queen sized bed in the middle had white spotless sheets and neatly organized pillows. There were two small drawers on each side of the bed with a nice fancy lamp on one, and a few pens and other random stuff. There was also a wooden bureau-like glass panned drawer with old fashioned looking wine, whiskey, and other alcoholic beverages. I walked in to peek out the white curtain covered window and saw a couple of the survey corps members training below me. None of them looked familiar so I turned my attention to one of the drawers and walked to it to pick up the lone picture frame. My thumb caressed the surface sensually. It was Levi's squad. I could see Petra with a flushed face and Levi with his usual frown, standing beside Oluo and the others. Fear gripped me. This must have been Levi's room then.
It was too clean for it to be Hanji's. "Crap crap crap crap...I gotta get the hell outta here before he suddenly shows up, which is impossible because he's underground but my overeactive imagination wont listen..." I mumbled nervously, setting the picture frame down and scurrying out the room. I closed the door quietly. My heart beat increased a little bit with the sudden andrenaline but It was all good now... I looked around me silently, swiping my pink bangs away from my face. Hanji's room was around here somwhere, I just had to look. I walked towards the third door and opened it. It smelled like cigarettes, Hanji didn't smoke. I shut it and opened the forth door. This room looked like a hurricane hit it, clothes were all over the floor and the bed was unmade, with pillows scattered about. I spotted my red top laying on the bed and my black boots. This was Hanji's room alright...I walked in, nearly tripping over a shoe in the process. Grabbing my belongings, I made it out and closed the door behind me quietly. I was relieved I had my clothes back at least, I missed them. Climbing down the staires and turning sharply, I nearly staggered back as my face collided with a chest.
"Watch where your going."
I looked up to see Erwin. My mouth hung open. "Oh! S-sorry, wait, the meeting is over? I babbled. He smiled warmly.
"For now, There's another one to be held soon, but there's no need to worry about you being suspected, you're safe." He exclaimed.
"Alright..." I stared at his chest for a while. The duct tape was still visible. "You haven't taken that off?"
He looked down at his bloody and torn shirt. "No, I was actually going to the infirmary."
I smiled brightly. "I can heal you, if you'll let me."
"If it's not a problem." He motioned for me to follow him. He was taking me into his office. I held my clothes and boots tightly as I followed him into his domain . Now that the place was fully lit, I could see a bunch of scattered papers on his desk and a half finished liquor bottle. It seemed people liked their alcohol here. He sat down on the chair and tore his shirt open giving me access to his chest and stomach. I gulped, trying hard not to show my sudden shyness. I mean, he was well built...I couldn't help but notice the toned muscle. I set my belongings down on the desk and bent to remove the tape. He winced slightly but kept his cool, shutting his eyes. Good, at least he didn't have to stare while I worked. I examined the wound carefully. It was a clean cut thankfully, and she didn't tear too much flesh. It was only a little deep. I pressed my hand to his chest and let my chakra flow into him. I felt his tension leave as he relaxed.
" Hmm It feels nice." He muttered. I shifted, trying hard not to feel flushed.
"It's supossed to, it means it's working." I muttered back, reaching to sound professional. He kept silent as I fixed the cut and mended the flesh back together.
"How often did you do this?" He asked after a while of silence.
I looked up into his blue eyes. "Often, I would work shifts in the hospital back in my village, my mentor, the hokage, worked me a lot, it's not so different from Levi, except Levi makes me clean too much, it's annoying, i'm a medic not a maid."
"If it bothers you that much I can get you a part-time position in the infirmary." He offered. I stiffened. I didn't mean it like that.
"That's fine. It's nice to have a break, and I don't mind it all that much, Levi is...sometimes pleasant to be around, he really cares about the people around him, even though he doesn't really show it." I said quickly.
He gazed at me carefully. "Levi was different when I introduced him into the survey corps, he was a skilled man with no manners or etiquette, experiencing life outside the walls made a good change in him."
I stared at him, immensly curious. "You mean he wasn't a clean freak?"
He laughed out loud, his chest shaking with the sudden movement. "Why does everyone call him that? Anyway...no he didn't really care about anything, he was so uncooporative and hard to deal with it was a hassle having him around, He was a thug after all, living in the streets, stealing to survive."
I was alarmed at this new piece of information. Levi a thug? I just couldn't picture it...I could only imagine him sweeping the streets in an apron and headpiece, then laying a clean white sheet on the ground to sit on it. Seriously..."Why would you recruit someone like that?"
Erwin gave a heartwarming smile. "Because he was perfect, he was strong, he had so much skill I couldn't just let him go. He is humanities strongest soldier, no one has mastered the gear like he did."
I thought about that for a while. I knew what Levi was capable of, But it was very brief, in his fight with Annie. He was so fast...so...so...perfect. Like Erwin had put it. Was he even human? What else was he capable of? I knew nothing about him, but I wanted to, curiously. I felt myself drawn to him. He was just so mysterious.
"Whatever happened to his parents?" I asked, hungry for more information.
Erwin shrugged. "He never talks about his past, and we don't ask." I sulked. The wound was finished healing and I removed my hand.
"It's done." I stated. He looked down and caressed his chest with the palm of his hand, then looked up at me as I stood up.
"Thank you." He smiled. He did that quite a lot, something Levi could really use practice on...
"Your welcome!" I replied happily. I picked up my belongings as he stood up and stretched. "Oh, I wanted to ask, do you know where Petra used to live?"
He thought for a moment, then shook his head. "No, sorry, Levi might know, they were close, you can ask him why?"
"I wanted to see the cherry blossom trees she told me about." I muttered.
He led me outside the room and locked the door with a set of keys. "I see, Winter is on it's way here, so there might not be much to look at, but there are still some that are alive and in bloom I think."
"Yeah, thanks for telling me." I turned around to walk back outside.
"Thank YOU, and enjoy your day." He said as we parted ways. So Levi must know, wether he wanted to show me to her home or not was another thing. Would he feel awkward after his confrontation with her dad? Either way, it was a perfect opportunity for me to tell him about her feelings for him. It was the least I could do for her. I wanted to get dressed and look for him afterwards...I was going to convince him to walk with me, and who knew? Maybe he would say a few things about himself, if I was lucky. I hurried over to my underground domain once again, contemplating how the rest of my day would go.
