What Is That?!
It had been a couple of weeks. Garrett's nose was trying so hard to go up my ass. It was infuriating. I had yet to give him a solid answer on what to do about our relationship, that is, if I wanted to have one with him again. And with how he acted, it didn't get any easier for me to come up with that answer.
Sure, for the most part, he was a pain. But he was being super sweet to me. And without me doing anything in return for him. I was becoming a believer that people could really change. Well, some people. I still doubted my ex-husband could ever change.
I would like to know the same about Gray. He had been all over the place lately. One day, he forgot a page in a report Vince needed for an important meeting. Another day, Nick made a mistake. Gray told him he would take care of it. And just yesterday, Gray called me over to his desk. I thought he would yell at me for emailing him the surveys I made for a client too late. Instead, he told me I did a good job.
Vince was the most shocked of us all when Dana updated him about Gray's personality shift. Everyone was wondering if Gray was sick or something. When I confirmed it with Vince, he pretended to faint in his big office chair. The three of us laughed in his office. Some of our co-workers tried to look inside to see what was so funny.
I returned to my desk and saw Garrett standing there waiting for me.
"No, Garrett, I don't need anything," I said as I sat in front of my computer.
He constantly asked if I needed coffee or anything copied or faxed.
"Actually, I was wondering if you could help me with something." Garrett frowned and leaned over to talk more privately.
I noticed he had a folder in his hand.
"I need help with this report. Gray has been on my ass extra hard lately. He's giving me all the crap jobs."
"Really? He seems to have been unusually nice to everyone else." I was confused. Why was Gray singling out Garrett?
"Yeah, well, I can't get it all done this week. Gray's going to get me fired." Garrett turned and glared over at Gray at his desk.
I turned to look. When I did, Gray looked back over at us.
"Ah, shit. Just email me what you need me to." I shooed Garrett away before he got me onto Gray's bad side again.
Too late.
"You two, get back to work!" Gray shouted out.
Everyone looked at us. I blushed. Goddammit. It had been peaceful with Gray calm.
Garrett ran back to his desk. I stared at my computer screen, forgetting what to work on next. Then I got an email notification. It was from Garrett. I was shocked he sent me an email so quickly. It must have been the report he needed to be done.
I opened up the file and sighed. I understood what Garrett meant by getting the crap jobs. I looked into all the information and noted what I would start with once I finished my work.
Later on, everyone was leaving work. I was still staring at my screen. I had just started to work on Garrett's report. I wanted to get most of it done right away. He was going to need it done in two days.
Garrett walked by my desk and mouthed the words 'thank you' as he walked out the door behind Chloe. I felt better helping him since he had sucked up to me lately.
-
I got home late last night. I almost didn't want to go in today, but I had to finish Garrett's report. I only got about five hours of sleep.
I was the last one to walk into the office. Everyone turned to look at me. It made me jump. What was everyone looking at? I looked down at myself, afraid I put on sweatpants or two different shoes. Nope, surprisingly, I have dressed appropriately.
"What?"
I scanned everyone's faces, followed their eyes, and looked over at my desk. There were a dozen roses on my desk.
"Oh my god."
It must have been Garrett. How embarrassing. Everyone was going to think we were dating again. I walked over and immediately found myself smelling the bright red roses. For a moment, I thought dating him again wouldn't be so bad this time.
"You like them?" Garrett crept up behind me.
I spun around. "Please, Garrett, you don't have to keep doing things like this."
"Yes, I do. I was a dick to you. Now you're helping me with my work. Again." He smiled at me.
I couldn't help but blush and smile back.
Suddenly, a chill went up my spine. In the corner of my eye, I saw Gray walking over.
"Could you two stop flirting and start working?" Gray glared at both of us. He had such a scowl look on his face.
Garrett rushed to his desk. He seemed so scared of Gray. What the hell did Gray do to him?
I looked up at Gray, studying his scowling face. What the hell was his problem?
"You look more tired than usual," Gray commented as he studied my face.
I scoffed. "What?"
I had to laugh at how blunt he was. Then Emily walked over to us.
"So, Ella, do you think you can look at something for me, please?" She grabbed my hand and took me to her desk on the other side of the room.
I wanted to say more to Gray. But thanks to Emily, I didn't.
"What the fuck is his problem now?" I asked her.
"Relax. You know how Gray can be. He's just awkward." Emily shook her head.
I folded my arms over my chest and watched Gray and Emily give each other the stink eye before he walked back to his desk. That was strange.
"So, what's up with you and Garrett? Are you back together or what?" Emily asked me with narrowed eyes.
"No, he's just trying to make up for being a jerk to me before."
"Okay..." Emily didn't sound entirely convinced.
We chatted about something Emily was working on. I returned to my desk and smiled at the roses. They looked and smelled beautiful.
A few hours after everyone else was gone, I finally finished Garrett's report and emailed it to him. It would be ready for him to give to Gray tomorrow. Soon, I yawned and stretched my arms over my head. I felt relieved it was done. Garrett wouldn't have to worry about being fired anymore.
It was funny that I went to Vince to ask for a transfer after our break up. He declined, explaining he couldn't transfer an employee who hadn't been there for at least a year. But he offered to transfer Garrett if it would make me feel better. I was surprised Vince would even consider doing that for me. But I didn't want Garrett to hate me.
I drove home and parked in front of my building. I was unclipping my seatbelt when I heard a tapping noise. I jumped when I saw someone standing right outside my door.
It was Gray.
I was shocked to see him out this late. I fumbled with my seatbelt and opened the door.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
I looked up at him and noticed he wore grey sweatpants, a plain white t-shirt, and tennis shoes. His dark curly hair looked unruly. Did he crawl out of bed just now?
"Are you just getting back from the office?" He asked in a demanding voice.
"So what if I was?"
I slammed my car door and tried to walk away. But Gray blocked me with his arms stretched out. His shirt lifted up a little, showing his lower abdomen.
What is that?
I blushed, realizing it must have been too long for me to go without a man.
"What were you working on? You sent me the last of your reports an hour before work ended. I was surprised."
"You were surprised that I finished them? Do you really think I'm that incompetent? I've been there for a year, for God's sake!"
I was shaking. I was so mad. Gray's personality was giving me whiplash.
"No, no! Nothing like that! I know you can do your job!"
Gray shouted back at me. I knew I yelled first, but it still surprised me when he yelled back. He seemed offended that I would accuse him of that.
"Whatever, I'm tired. I need to go to bed." I pushed past him.
I reached the door to my building and turned to look back toward my car. He just stood there, watching me with that stupid blank face. I didn't know what he wanted from me. I ignored him and went into the elevator.
Once I entered my apartment, I walked to the living room window and looked into the street. I watched Gray walk back into his building.
I rubbed my face with both of my hands.
"What the fuck?" I groaned.
I really didn't want to go to work the next day. I plopped down on my couch and ended up sleeping there.
