Third Wheel
The next day, I gathered up the courage to tell Emily about Gray and me. I was nervous about how she would respond, but I was determined to tell her. At the end of the day, I saw Emily walk over to Gray's desk again. I nodded to him before following her to his desk.
She started to talk to Gray about a report when I stepped close to him and held his hand. I thought it was best to rip the bandaid off. Before Emily could speak, I blurted out, "We're dating."
Emily's jaw dropped. Her eyes narrowed for a second, and I could see the wheels turning in her head.
"I know. I know. It caught me off guard too. It happened while you were away." I looked up at Gray and smiled. "Apparently he's had a crush on me for a while."
Gray blushed and pushed his glasses up. "Yes, well." He smiled and squeezed my hand.
Emily jumped toward us and grabbed each of our hands. "That's great! I'm so happy for you guys!"
Despite her seemingly happy reaction, I could tell Emily was trying to hide her disappointment. She hugged me tight, and I thanked her and hugged her back. We talked about other things as we walked to the elevator.
Once in the parking lot, Gray walked to the car for me and Emily to talk.
"Hey, are you okay with this? I'm sorry we didn't tell you sooner."
She smiled and said, "Of course, I'm happy for you. I'm just a bit surprised."
I could tell she was trying to be supportive, but I could also feel the subtle sadness in her voice.
The next day, things seemed to go back to normal. As normal as it could be with Emily back. At the very least, Gray and I didn't have to hide our relationship. Except it was fun to sneak into the stairway and steal a quick kiss without Emily seeing.
I caught Emily suspiciously eyeing us several times, but she never said anything. It was probably because I wasn't afraid to tell her how I disliked Gray most days before she moved. Though, everyone else in the office didn't seem that surprised when they found out.
With another day done, I waited for Gray to finish sending emails. We had planned to watch a new horror movie tonight. I watched him sitting at his desk and typing away on his keyboard. His lips twitched slightly whenever he had to send numerous emails. It was cute when he concentrated so hard on his work.
"Hey guys! What do you have planned tonight?" Emily stood up from her desk.
I smiled. "We're watching The Reaped tonight."
Emily frowned. "Ugh, I don't like those scary movies."
"What are you doing tonight?" I asked.
Emily rocked back and forth on her feet. "Well I want to hang out with you two."
I was about to say we could hang out tomorrow, but Gray joined the conversation.
"We can pick something else out, whatever you're comfortable with." He smiled warmly.
"Aw really? Great! I'll grab my purse!" Emily cheered.
"Oh, um." I couldn't get any words out. This wasn't what we planned at all. I watched Gray stand up and walk toward me.
His eyes twinkled as he grabbed my hand. "It's alright. We'll watch the other movie tomorrow night. I thought it would be nice for you two to hang out more outside of work again."
I smiled. I understood where Gray came from, but I wished he had talked to me before inviting her.
Once we got to our street, Gray walked across the street to his apartment to change out of his work clothes. I tried to coax him into a quick session of some hanky panky, but he said he would feel too pressured to finish in time before Emily arrived. I pouted but thought we still had the rest of the night.
I got into my apartment and changed into my comfy clothes right away. I started heating up popcorn in the microwave when I heard a knock on my door. It was Emily.
She entered and looked around the room. "No Gray?"
"He went home to change quick." I said as I stood back by the microwave.
"Ah, so you guys haven't moved in together then?" Emily plopped on the couch.
I blushed. "Oh no, that's too soon."
"Yeah, you're probably right."
Then, there was an awkward silence for what seemed like a long time before Gray knocked on my door.
He walked inside and noticed Emily on the couch. He turned to me and smirked. I knew he thought he was right. We wouldn't have had time to do anything before she came over. Of course, he was right. It's never been shorter than an hour for us.
I laughed at myself.
Gray chuckled and sat on the couch next to Emily. "So have you picked a movie?"
Emily sighed. "Actually I feel guilty for ruining your night, so I thought we could still watch The Reaped."
I spun around and looked at her, confused. She never wanted to watch horror movies. The one time I got her to watch one with me, she cried out and covered her eyes the whole time. I ended up stopping the movie halfway through because I couldn't take her screaming anymore. What was she screaming at anyway if she couldn't see anything?
"Really?" I was baffled.
"Yes, please, I don't want to be a party pooper." Emily smiled at Gray.
"Alright then." Gray raised a brow. He knew as well as I how she was with anything scary.
Soon, we were all sitting on the couch. Gray was in the middle. The movie's first twenty minutes went fine; not a whole lot had happened yet. But then the first jump scare came up, and Emily shrieked. I rolled my eyes.
Surprisingly, that was the only time she screamed for the next thirty minutes. We got a little past halfway when things started getting intense and terrifying. There were a couple of parts I even jumped. Gray laughed and placed his large hand on my thigh. It comforted me.
Suddenly, the demon attacked the main love interest and ripped their throat with crooked, sharp teeth. Emily screeched. Her hand grabbed Gray's arm and buried her head into his shoulder.
Initially, I rolled my eyes at her being so dramatic. But a few seconds of her not moving off of him irritated me.
I looked up at Gray, and he didn't seem to notice her. He continued watching the movie. I wondered if she had acted like this with him before when they used to do things together after work before she got back together with Dylan. Even so, I didn't think it was appropriate anymore with his girlfriend sitting right here.
I grabbed the remote and paused the movie.
"I'll be right back." I quickly stood up. I saw Emily finally lift her head up.
She giggled. "Sorry, I didn't think it was going to be this scary."
I scoffed and walked into my bathroom.
I did my business and washed my hands. Then I heard the floor creak right outside the door.
"Are you alright, sweetie?" Gray whispered into the door.
I opened the door and saw his concerned face. I grabbed his hand, pulled him inside, and shut the door.
"Actually, I'm kind of irritated. We had our night planned out and now Emily is jumping on you." I folded my arms across my chest.
Gray frowned. "I'm sorry. I should have asked you if you wanted her here. I just thought it would be nice for you two to reconnect."
I sighed. "I know, I know. But things are different now. I'm your girlfriend. You're my boyfriend. I don't feel comfortable with another woman hanging on you like that. Ever since she's been back, it seems like she's been flirting with you."
It was difficult to say all this to him, but I needed to tell him. I refuse to become paranoid. Just because Adam cheated on me doesn't mean Gray would.
Gray smiled. "You have nothing to worry about. She's always been this way. She's like a little sister to me. She's always called me her big brother." He cupped my cheek. "But if it makes you feel better, I'll talk to her about it."
I leaned my cheek into his hand. "Thank you."
We returned to the living room to continue watching the movie. I sat in the middle. For the rest of the movie, Emily didn't scream or jump once.
