Fortunately, it had been a week since I saw any sign of Adam. The nightmares were less frequent, and Gray and I had gotten even closer. He said he had a surprise for me this weekend. The first thing to cross my mind was he was going to propose. There was no way that was going to happen. We hadn't even been dating for a year.
In Gray's car, we headed toward the airport. My next thought was he booked a surprise trip for us. But then he would have told me to pack my things. What was going on?
"Any guesses?" Gray asked as he parked.
I shook my head and smiled. "No idea."
"There's someone who's been dying to meet you." He smiled.
It clicked. His younger sister, Becky. She's been going to the University of Brighton overseas.
"Oh my god! Becky?" I bounced in the passenger seat. I've been wanting to meet her too. He's told me some funny stories of when they were little and the trouble she got him in. But he's always saying how proud of her he is.
He nodded, "She'll be in town for a couple weeks while her classes are on break."
Gray stepped out of the car and walked around to open my door. Always the gentleman. I don't know if I would ever get used to it.
We waited almost an hour in the large noisy crowd for her plane to land. Suddenly, walking out of a mob of people, was a more petite Gray with longer hair. I would have thought they were twins if I didn't already know they were nine years apart.
I was in awe when Becky ran up to Gray for a hug. They even wore similar business casual outfits. Dark curly hair, black-rimmed glasses, and dimpled smiles. They were incredibly adorable.
"Is this Gabriella?" Becky turned to me and then elbowed her older brother in the ribs. "Your girlfriend?" She teased.
"Hi." I said nervously as I gave her a little finger wave.
"She is too cute and wholesome for you!" Becky laughed as she stepped toward me with her arms stretched out for a hug.
"Did you thaw out my brother's heart?" She said in my ear.
I chuckled.
"I heard that." Gray grumbled.
"Oh now, don't be a sourpuss." Becky let go of me and looked me over from head to toe.
They looked alike, but each of them gave off totally different first impressions.
"Gabriella is a keeper, I know it. You need to tell me when the wedding is as soon as possible for me to plan my next trip over here." Becky wiggled her eyebrows at me.
I blushed and quickly glanced at Gray. This was so embarrassing, we hadn't talked about marriage yet. I don't even know if he ever wanted to get married. And I don't know if I really ever want to get married again.
Gray looked so caught off guard by her statement. "Please don't embarrass her, sister." There was a blush in his cheeks.
"You two are going to be so much fun!" Becky laughed as she walked over to the baggage claim area.
The car ride back to Gray's apartment was entertaining, to say the least. I tried to convince Becky to sit in the front seat with Gray so it would be easier to talk and catch up. But she refused and demanded I sit in the back with her. Apparently, I was the sole reason for her trip overseas. She joked, or at least I thought it was a joke, that even if Gray and I broke up the day before, she would have come over to meet me anyway.
Becky reminded me of an old friend I had in high school. We lost contact with each other after her family moved away right before senior year. I hadn't been great at making friends after that. Another reason why it was so easy for me to fall for Adam. But since working at Westlake Marketing, I have met so many nice people who seem to care a lot about me. Thanks to Gray, I have another person I know I will cherish for a long time.
After playing twenty, no, more like a hundred, questions, Becky seemed satisfied with all my answers.
"It's confirmed, she's too good for you bro." Becky crossed her arms and nodded her head.
Gray looked in the review mirror and met my eyes. "I already knew that."
A huge smile spread across Becky's face for a second before she made a gagging sound. "You have gotten so cheesy."
She looked over at me and winked. "I'm so happy you met my brother."
I looked at the two of them. "I'm happy too. And I'm happy to finally meet you."
After another half hour of us girls singing along to the radio and laughing, we pulled up on our street.
"Did you guys want to come over to my place first?" I asked.
Becky tilted her head. "I thought you moved in with him?"
Gray choked out a laugh. "I never said that."
"Well I assumed because you made it sound like she was over at your place all the time." Becky mumbled.
I laughed. "It's alright. How about we watch something at my place? I have a ton of movies. And wine."
"You'll love her horror movie collection." Gray pointed out.
"This girl speaks to my heart." Becky placed her hand over her heart.
Gray stepped out of the car and went to open up the trunk to get Becky's luggage out.
"Wait, weren't we just saying we'd go to your place?" Becky asked me.
"Yeah." I pointed to the building across the street. "My apartment building is right across from his."
Becky's jaw dropped. "No way! Is that how you guys met? Saw each other across the street and fell in love?"
I laughed awkwardly. "No, didn't Gray tell you how we met?"
Becky pouted. "No. He never tells me any details. Just that he met a girl and that she makes him feel all fuzzy inside."
I was so confused. I assumed Gray kept more in touch with his sister and told her everything about us.
"Oh, alright. Well-" Before I could tell her anything, Gray knocked on the window.
"You ready?" He asked just as the door flew open.
Becky jumped out of the car. "You shithead! You never told me you two were neighbors! That's some juicy stuff I'd like to know. Unfortunately, I need to live vicariously through you for any hint of romance."
I wondered what she meant by that.
"Okay, okay. We'll tell you the story when we get upstairs." Gray tugged the luggage behind him as he led the way to my apartment.
