Called Out

It had been two weeks, and the Black Cat was packed again. Everyone in our department was there for Emily's going away party. Tomorrow she and Dylan were leaving. I was a little worried that he wouldn't come like he didn't for my anniversary. Everyone was having a great time, even Gray.

I watched Dana, Steve, Charlotte, and another researcher on Dana's team, Megan, dance. Nick and Chloe were chatting on the other end of the bar. Gray, Alex, and Vince sat at a table, drinking and laughing.

I was surprised to see Gray let loose. His laughter sounded warm-hearted and was refreshing to hear. I never thought I would use those words to describe him.

Emily sat next to me at the bar, waiting for our drinks. Her drink of the night was lemonade.

"UGH! When is Dylan going to be here?" Emily groaned as she stretched her arms on the bar.

"I'm sure he'll be here soon." I patted her back.

I glanced back at Gray's table and couldn't help but smile when I saw him laughing again. I didn't realize he had such cute dimples.

"What are you staring at?" Emily leaned on my shoulder.

"Oh, um. What are the guys laughing about?"

"Hmm. I don't know. Go ask!" Emily suddenly shoved me off my bar stool, and I stumbled in front of their table.

"Woah there!" Alex laughed. "How much did you drink?"

"Heh. I'm actually waiting on my third drink." I straightened up and blushed.

"Come! Sit!" Vince pulled a chair out for me.

"Oh, thanks." It was a little awkward. I hadn't interacted with Vince outside of work at all.

I listened to their conversations about work and sports. Soon, Emily came over with our drinks. She set them on the table and sat between Alex and me.

"So, did you figure out what they were talking about?" Emily grinned mischievously at me.

Oh my god.

"Oh, were you trying to ease drop on us earlier?" Alex winked at me.

I smiled and felt my face burn up. Alex caught me. I let my long dark hair hang in front of my eyes. I actually had all of my hair down that night.

"Uh oh. Miss Sawyer might have heard you, Gray." Vince laughed.

"Heard what?" I blurted out and looked up at them.

Gray wouldn't look at me. He stared down at his beer and then drank from it until it was empty. Once empty, he stood up and walked to the bar.

"Was Gray picking on my Ella again?" Emily glared at Alex and Vince.

"No! Nothing of the sort! Gray told me about her hard work on some top clients' reports, even though they were supposed to be Garrett's reports. Then we laughed about the look on his face when I fired him." Vince's contagious laugh boomed throughout the bar. Emily and I laughed with him. The image of Garrett's shocked face was priceless.

Once the laughter died down, Alex looked at Emily nervously.

"Emily, can I talk to you about something quick before you leave?" Alex asked her.

"Yeah, sure. What's up?" Emily took another sip of her lemonade.

"L-let's go outside." Alex glanced at me.

I raised my eyebrow, wondering what he had to say that he couldn't say in front of anyone else. Though, it didn't seem to faze Emily.

"Okay!" Emily hopped out of her chair, and they walked out the front entrance.

I continued sitting at the table and sipped from my pretty orange drink. It tasted tropical. Vince set his drink down and answered his ringing phone.

"Yes. Fine. Let's get it set up tomorrow." Vince hung up. He sighed and smiled at me.

"I have to head home and get some sleep. There's a new client I have to set up a meeting with tomorrow." Vince stood up from the table.

"Oh, okay. Have a good night." I felt a little guilty that he was leaving early while we stayed.

Vince waved goodbye. I watched him walk in front of the bar to the entrance. Gray had a new beer and headed back to the table. They crossed paths. Vince stopped Gray and said something to him that I couldn't hear. Gray nodded his head and came to sit at the table again.

We sat in silence for a few minutes. We drank from our glasses and watched our coworkers have fun on the dance floor.

I sighed. "I wonder what happened to Emily and Alex. I'm going to see where they are."

"Oh, I'll come with you." Gray quickly stood up from his chair.

"Okay?" I questioned Gray. I didn't expect him to follow me.

We walked to the entrance. Nick and Chloe were still sitting at the bar, flirting. I watched Steve twirl Dana around, and Charlotte cheered them on. Chloe had yet to mention Garrett at all in the last two weeks. She didn't miss him either.

The music began to fade out as we stepped outside. I scanned the parking lot and found Emily and Alex standing at the other end next to the street. It looked like Emily was having a good time. She laughed with Alex about something.

Suddenly, Alex got quiet and looked nervous. I couldn't hear anything they were saying. As I continued walking toward them, a car pulled up behind Emily.

"Dylan!" Emily cheered.

We watched Dylan jump out of his car and storm up to Alex.

"What do you think you're doing?" Dylan shouted.

"What the hell are you talking about?" Alex raised his hands defensively.

Dylan got in Alex's face, and they spoke in low voices. I couldn't hear anything. I started walking faster as I could see Emily trying to get between them. But then I felt Gray brush past me. He sprinted up to Alex and Dylan.

"Hey! Knock it off!" Gray shoved Dylan away from Alex.

I had never seen Gray look so angry and violent. I had no idea what was going on. I froze as I saw Dylan pushing Gray back.

"Dylan!" Emily screamed.

Emily's angry voice snapped me out of it. I ran up to her. Emily hugged me and started to cry. Everything must have been too much for her.

I rubbed her back. "It's okay, Emi. Hold on."

I let go of Emily and stormed up to Gray and Dylan, who were in each other's faces, daring the other to throw the first punch. Alex stood there and bounced his focus between the guys and Emily. He looked confused about what to do.

"HEY!" I roared once I got in the middle of Gray and Dylan. I placed each hand on their chests and pushed them away from each other.

"What the fuck are you guys doing? It's Emily's last night with us! Can't you see how upset she is? You guys are ruining it for her!"

Everyone froze. It was silent beside Emily's crying and cars driving by. I looked around and noticed the rest of our gang standing outside the entrance.

Charlotte looked shocked. But when she saw Emily crying, she ran up to Emily and wrapped her arms around her.

"Aww, sweetie. Shh. It's okay. You didn't do anything wrong. Shh. It will be alright."

Dylan sneered at me before he walked over to Emily.

"Let's go." Dylan curtly said as he put his hand on Emily's shoulder.

Charlotte reluctantly let Emily out of her arms. The look of disgust Charlotte gave Dylan almost made me chuckle out loud.

Emily wiped away her tears and agreed to leave. He stormed back to his car and slammed his door as he got in. Emily opened her door and faced us, and sadly waved goodbye.

We watched Dylan's car leave the parking lot. Once it was out of view, Alex stormed up to Gray.

"Why the hell did you do that? Why didn't you convince her to stay? Now she's gone!" Alex shouted at Gray.

"I was saving your face from being hit by that jackass! And you should have talked to her a long time ago!" Gray shouted back.

Alex frowned and closed his eyes. Then he sighed and slicked his blonde hair back again. He opened his eyes, and they went from Gray to me and then back to Gray.

"You're such a hypocrite," Alex smirked at Gray and walked back into the bar.

Gray turned his head slightly as if he was going to look back at me. Instead, he shook his head and walked into the bar too.

Charlotte and Dana walked up to each side of me. They asked questions about what had happened before they came outside. But I couldn't answer them right away. I was confused about what Alex and Gray said. Did Alex want Emily to stay that badly? I didn't realize they were that close. And why did Dylan run up and try to fight with Alex?
