Chapter two

-third person-

Ruby crouched in the middle of the circle of angry dragons. She seemed to think if she crouched low enough, she would dissapear. The older dragons scowled at her, some turned their backs. Others just stared dissapointedly. Only one dragon still believed in Ruby, her small friend Opal, who was a year older but looked younger.

His almost rainbow scales glistening in the sunlight, Opal tried to decide what to do. If he didn't join in soon, he would be scorned as well. He didn't want to be hated, but Ruby was still his friend. Then maybe she'll just have to stop being my friend. he decided in his head, but something about that just didn't feel right.

Meanwhile, Ruby was already trying to plan her escape route. She could try to fly out of there, but she might get caught in the web of a bug dragon, and she hated bug dragons. Maybe she could skid under the legs of the older dragons, but a speed dragon might catch up to her. Tunneling wasn't an option, the earth dragons would make sure of that. Maybe fighting? No, the fire dragons would burn her to a crisp. And the water dragons would be waiting for her in the ocean. There were so many dragons, all with their own powers. They were so hard to escape from if you had none of your own.

The dragons were closing in angrily. Murmurs floated through the air.

Useless...
Pointless...
Don't need her...
Get rid of her...
She was no dragon anyway...

The murmurs merged together, and grew louder, until they were one continuous chant.

Kill the runt!
Kill the runt!
Kill the runt!
Kill the runt!

Opal screwed his eyes shut. He thought, maybe, if he blocked out the sight, he could forget what was happening. He tried and tried, but the eerie chant of the dragons echoed in his head. Should he help his friend? Maybe the older dragons were right, and Ruby was no dragon. But then again, he was no dragon if he betrayed friends willy-nilly. He flew up.

Opal grabbed his friend in his claws. Almost immediately the bug dragons started shooting up webs. Ruby screamed. She didn't like to and didn't tend to discriminate, but there was a line with bug dragons and she pretty much had a mental breakdown if you crossed it. While Ruby was panting, Opal dodged the webs and flew for the horizon. They had no idea where they were going to go, but they knew it would have to be far, far away.
