Chapter 31 | spy
What exactly was going on in that seaside town baffled you. And you couldn't stop thinking about it, both you and L couldn't stop thinking about it.
So when he came down to visit tonight you both walked into town to see the wreck that had been recovered, this time without all the water in it. It was closed off behind police tape, but you just wanted to gaze from a distance hoping you'd figure something out.
So you stood barefoot and wrapped up in L's shirt having just gotten out of the water, and L stood decked out in his yokai disguise and the two of you just looked at the wreck from behind the tape, hoping some kind of idea would come to you.
"That hole would have made the boat take on water really fast once it all cracked open..." you said.
"Definitely, they probably went under within less than an hour" L replied.
The rest of the town was on edge after hearing about the murders, and usually it was bustling with life at night. But now it'd grown rather quiet by the seaside town, most people afraid to go out too late.
"I just don't understand how there's no sign of anyone tampering with the boat the night before. It was clearly done then, but no one saw anything at the docks that night. It'd be hard to sneak around there too since people live on house boats" you pondered.
"This is definitely the strangest case I've seen. You think they used some kind of magic to tamper with the boat from afar?" L suggested.
"Well the crack in the hull maybe, but the missing engine parts and locks? There's no way. You'd need to do it by hand. So at some point someone was on that boat before the owners took it out"
The two bodies had been identified as the owners of the boat. Both fae folk, and long time residents of the area. Married couple Hyacinthus Billow and Alura Billow. Last seen buying fruit from the markets then heading back to the boat. The rest was obvious, they took the boat out and then it sunk.
They seemed to be random picks, no one in connection to them was suspicious. Whoever the killer is probably saw they were an easy target, at some point tampered with the boat and picked them purely because they could get away with it.
So who was the killer? You knew how the sinking happened, but not who did it or why. It didn't seem like a crime of passion so it can't be something like a falling out, jealousy or anger. Was it to steal something on the boat? Was it completely random? Was it because the couple reminded the killer of someone they knew?
It was just one big open ended question mark. No clue who or why could have done this.
"You've seen plenty of cases before L, you think there's a reason they were picked to be the victims?" You asked.
"Honestly it's a 50-50 chance on being completely random and just out of convenience, or because the killer was taking out some kind of internal issue on them because they were projecting onto them. I don't think it was to steal anything... since we didn't find anything apart from the hull, locks and engine tampered with. Nothing had been taken" L replied.
"Interesting, so if it's just completely random it's more likely the killer is doing this for some kind of pleasure rather than a personal strife"
"You know you're actually pretty good at this for never having solved a case before. That's usually how random killings go down, it's a sick pleasure thing"
Wow, a compliment on your detective skills from L himself. Quite the feat.
"Honestly I've just picked all this up off you and your stories. I guess unless something else comes out it's just a shot in the dark with one it is then huh?" You replied.
"Yep, investigators will have to go down both leads if there's no more clues. Hopefully there's no more victims, but if they do strike again then that will show if there's a pattern or not. If there's a pattern it's for personal reasons, if there's not it's random" L explained.
"Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but honestly with how planned out this was I wouldn't be surprised if they stuck again. Scary to think about, that the killer could be in the town right now and no one knows"
"That's exactly why it's so quiet out here recently, everyone's all worked up. At least people being careful increases chances of witnesses seeing something suspicious"
You'd stood there looking at the wreck and pondering for long enough, you both knew that unless there was another clue it would just be a matter of looking at both options. The two of you turned to head into town to get a midnight snack, wishing you had some kind of answer.
"You think they'll strike again?" You asked.
"Honestly? Yeah. That usually happens in these types of cases. I know it's morbid, since people will loose their lives but hopefully the town being so worked up will mean more witnesses to suspects. This looks like the start of a string of murders, I've seen it a lot" L replied.
Morbid as it may be, even with the efforts of law enforcement and the town catch the guy, L was right. The conditions were perfect for them to strike again, with the town on high alert yes there'd be more witnesses but that also meant people were distracted with their own safety rather than the people around them. And when you're distracted, things can slip past you.
You hoped L was wrong and there'd be no more bodies turning up, but if there was at least that might lead to more clues.
L was a little uneasy about leaving you alone now. He knew full well you were a powerful being and could absolutely drown a bitch in seconds if you had to, but it was his inner worried detective boyfriend telling him to make sure you were protected.
"(Y/n)... you can put people in trances with your singing right?" L asked.
"Yep, that's siren magic" you replied.
"If someone looks suspicious, promise me you'll like... sing them away from you ok?"
"Don't worry honey. I appreciate the concern but I'm a water dweller, we're fast. I have a very strong tail that can knock people out and swim me to safety. But if it comes down to it, I'll use my lure call to lure them away from me"
"Good... good. I just don't want anything to happen to you"
L had seen many cases like this, but the strange circumstances around it made it the most unique one he's seen as well. He had a bad feeling about this, he knew someone would at least end up hurt.
The question was, when?
