Chapter Twenty

They got closer and closer to the girls, leering at them menacingly. Josie and Sarah started to push their backs into each other, for reassurance that they were both still in it together, that they were both still present. There was a window in the wall to the side of them, through which the sun was shining, outlining the orbs of dust that were falling from the building. It was such a perfect day, you wouldn't have thought that the situation that Josie and Sarah were in was actually happening. But it was, and the crowd were closing in more and more on the two by the second. They were completely outnumbered, and deep down, even Sarah knew she couldn't fight them all off. She might've been brave and good with weapons, but these men were 10 times her size, and they came in packs. Josie lent her head over Sarah's shoulder and whispered in her ear.
"What are we supposed to do? Oh my god, we're gonna die!"
Sarah couldn't say anything supportive in return this time. All she could do was shake her head.
The heatwave was suffocating. Sweat started to cling to Josie and Sarah's clothes, yet strangely enough the crowds were completely cool, calm and collected. At one point, when the men had gotten within a foot of the girls, both of them closed their eyes tightly, grasped each other's hands and sunk to the floor as they knew it was their time. There was no way of making it out alive. Sarah gritted her teeth while Josie kept mentally praying over and over again in her head that this wasn't truly happening. Both of them were waiting for the final blow that would kill them, but it never came. After about 3 minutes, Sarah opened her eyes. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Squeezing Josie's hands to signal her to open her eyes, she broke the silence.
"They're gone!"
"What?"
"The men! They've disappeared!"
"Wha- How?!"
"I don't know Jo, open your eyes!"
She opened them to an empty corridor.
What?
"Were they... A mirage?"
"Maybe. Wait, where did Kaity go?"
Strangely enough, even Kaity had disappeared from the corridor. No signs that she'd ever been there. But how could all of this be happening?
