Chapter Seventeen
Their nightmare was finally over. The girls exchanged looks and hugged each other to celebrate their victory. They cleaned up the underground shelter and buried all the bodies so that no one would ever find out what happened on that fateful night. It was hard for Josie to bury Mark.
"It's for the best, Jo. We'd only get the blame for it if we told anyone."
When they opened the trap door to leave the shelter, they were blinded by the morning sun, whose rays were poking through any and every hole in the tree canopies.
"Lovely day today," Sarah remarked.
"Yeah, ironic really."
Josie got on her knees to cover the trap door with the leaves once again; some that were there from when they found the trap door, but also new leaves that had fallen during the night. Together, they made their way back to the tent. Initially the pair thought it would be quite hard to get back to the tent, as it wasn't close by. However, it just so happened that their luck was in order, as the trail they left behind with their crashing footprints led them right to it. Zipping the door down, the girls gasped from what was inside.
"Wha-?"
"This is the police. Please put your hands up where I can see them. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court. You have the right to remain silent."
Josie and Sarah slowly turned around with their hands in the air. They were surrounded by camouflaged police. No wonder they didn't see them, as they were well disguised. However, they were now forming a circle around the pair as two of the officers came forward, handcuffs at the ready.
"Wait! What have we done wrong?"
"No questions are to be answered until we get you to the station."
"Can I ask you one question?"
The officers remained quiet.
"Who called you guys?"
"Anonymous caller this morning."
The girls were bewildered. Who could've rung them? There was no one else out there... Was there?
Then it hit them. The realisation of who it was.
