Chapter Eight

It all happened so fast. Kaity fell forward as blood poured from her mouth. Josie let out a shriek as she saw her best friend die in front of her very eyes. Uncontrollably shaking, her instincts kicked in; her and Sarah had to get out of that tent, and fast. Before she had the chance to move, Sarah grabbed her knife she had brought with her in her backpack and lunged outside.
"SARAH, NO!" Josie yelled.
"WHERE ARE YOU, YOU COWARD?! I'M GONNA SLIT YOUR GODDAMN THROAT WHEN I FIND YOU!"
Josie stumbled out of the tent, numb from the sight of Kaity's motionless body. Her mind wasn't clear and she was hellbent on getting revenge alongside Sarah.
"Have you got any more weapons?"
"Check my backpack. In fact, bring it out here. We're going to find that spineless beast and kill him."
Josie did as she was told, and retrieved Sarah's backpack, once again having to see her dead best friend.
"I promise, we'll get justice for you, Kate. God, I'm so sorry that I brought you out here. It's all my fault. I love you so much and I never wanted any of this to happen," Josie whispered to Kaity. Before she left the tent for the final time, Josie placed a goodbye kiss on Kaity's cold cheek.
The girls set off into the woods, not only to get justice for Kaity, but to find Anna as well. The crunching of the leaves under their feet just sent Josie back to when the terrible event happened; if only they'd have checked outside...
Josie shook her head. She couldn't be thinking of that right now. The guilt would eat her up, and at this moment in time she wanted to stay focused on finding the intruder.
"How will we know where to find him?"
"Oh, we'll know, just keep your torch facing the floor and look out for footprints."
"What about Anna?"
"Oh crap, I forgot about Anna. Well I'm assuming that the intruder has her, so as soon as we find him, we'll make him talk."
They'd been walking for what seemed like an eternity before they came across a vital clue: a trail of blood...
Josie didn't know how to feel. Victorious for finding a lead? Or dreading what they might find? One thing was for certain; they had to find out.
Following the trail, the duo found that it led to a dead end. Josie was half relieved that she didn't have to see another best friend dead.
"So what now?"
"This can't just be a dead end, Jo. Here, hold my knife and give me the torch."
Sarah got on her hands and knees at the end of the blood trail, and scraped at the leaves. Sure enough, there was a trap door. Sarah looked to Josie, for consent to open the door, as she knew that once they did, there would be no going back.
Josie nodded in return.
Sarah grabbed the rusted handle of the trap door, pulled it back and let out a gasp when she found what was inside.
