Chapter 9: Waiting

And so, for the next long while, they waited. The next morning Shadow told everyone that they could wait for both Snowy to get better, the storm to die down, and for their parents.

Later that day, the hurricane began. Star could see, from her place on the beach, as the waves swirled and frothed. It was a horrific sight.

Star stood, watching in amazement and terror. The waves swept across the island, knocking trees over and leaving everything in a state of destruction. Something in her realized she should go tell the others. But she didn't. She stood and watched, for what seemed like hours.

It wasn't until, hours later, the storm began to slow. Slowly, the waves stopped covering the island. The waves drew back into the ocean. All that remained of a horrific hurricane was a light rain.

She took one last glance at the island, then ran back into the forest. She tripped over, and fell on, Shadowpaw, who was heading to the beach himself.  He looked at her, and there was something in his eyes that she understood. She stood up without rejection, and they ran and began swimming, to their old island home, in search of survivors. But even as they did, something in Star's head told her that no wolf could possibly have survived that horrible of a hurricane.
