Chapter 7: Hurricane Strikes

The next morning, when Shadowpaw woke up in the alpha's family den, he knew at once something was not right. It was cloudy, and it smelled strongly of moisture in the air. He must get out. The whole clan must get out.

He glanced at Lightpaw. She was still sleeping. His parents were as well, barely stirring in a calm and unworried sleep.

"Mother! Father! Lightpaw!" he hissed urgently. They all slept on. "Mother! Skyclaw!" His mother woke at the use of her first name. She sniffed the air, and she too understood that all was not well. Almost as if on cue, his father awoke at the same time.

"Lightpaw!" his mother hissed. "Wake up this instant!"

Lightpaw opened one eye lazily and yawned. "What, Mother?"

"Get up this instant! I am through with this laziness!"

Lightpaw stared at her mother in amazement. Usually her mother not only didn't mind her sleeping in, she slept in as well.

"Mum, is... are you alright?" Lightpaw asked timidly.

"No", said Shadow before Skyclaw could answer, "There's a hurricane coming. A big one."

                                                                        **********

Starpaw lept out of her sleep. Something was wrong with the weather.

"Star!" Shadow cried, running to her side.

"Snowy", was all she could say, and they both ran to the healer's cave, where Snowypaw and her parents were.

"Star!" Her mother exclaimed. "And Shadow! What-"

"No time, mum, we have to get off this island", Star said urgently. "There's a hurricane coming!"

"But... what about Snowy?"

"We'll bring her along." It was her father that answered this time. "Shadow and I can help her swim."

Coralheart sighed, but nodded. "All right", she murmured.

                                                                *******

Starpaw, her parents, Lightpaw and Shadowpaw stood on the beach. Coralheart was trying to wake up Snowypaw.

"Snowypaw! Snowy! Snowypaw, you wake up!"

Snowy opened her eyes. "Wha... "

"Come on, we have to go. A hurricane is coming!"

Snowy nodded, and didn't ask any questions. She, gingerly, stood.

"Come on," she said, "What're we waiting for?"

They headed into the surf. Star caught a hold of Shadow. "Shadow," She said softly, "Your parents... "

"They'll be fine", he assured her, "They're just helping the others to safety. They'll catch up."

But some part of him doubted that was true.
