Chapter 14: Empty
Coralheart's mind was in complete disarray. After Lightpaw and Icetail had left, she had, rather than going back to the beach to tell the rest of them, she walked in the opposite direction, not caring where she was going. Her friends, her entire pack, was eradicated. Her home had been destroyed... and now her mate had betrayed her.
Eventually, she collapsed, falling flat on her face, feeling tears of misery roll down her face. It couldn't be a dream... or even a nightmare. The tears running down her face, mixing with the blood drying from Icetail's attacks, were real. Very real.
The next thing she knew, a wolf was standing over her. "Mother?" Snowy asked timidly. Star licked her mother's face, and Shadow stood by her. "Mother, I... what happened?"
The feel of her daughter's tongue reminded her of why she was there, because of those two wolves, because of-
"Icetail-and Lightpaw," she whispered.
"Yeah, we heard you yelling, and then some howling, and then we found you lying here in hysterics-" Snowy began.
"Your father," she said softly, "He left me. For Lightpaw. They... they ran away."
Star and Snowy gaped at her, and Shadow looked shocked.
"But... but why Light?" Snowy asked, sounding hurt.
"I think I know," Shadow said. "She kept telling me that she really didn't like the way you survived, but our-her mother didn't. Then she felt like you were treating the rest of us better... and Icetail was apparently 'helping' her to get over the grief... and, she felt like Sunfire liked Snowypaw better-"
"What's he got to do with anything?" Star asked incredulously.
Shadow shrugged. Star sighed, and Star seemed close to tears about the betrayal of her best friend. Coral just felt a big, empty place inside where her heart used to be.
