Dad
Mom wrapped her arms around me, making me want to hold her even tighter. Her embrace felt comforting. I could never do this in werewolf form, I was more of a cuddler, but this was nice too.Eventually we pull away so she can look directly in my eyes. When she did her eyes went back to normal. As her eyes changed I could feel myself being sucked backwards into something and in a blink of Mindy's eye I was back looking at a screen.
"How did you do that?" I could hear Mindy talking to me.
"I don't know how I did, I thought you did it?"
"I had no idea what happened, but that was so cool!"
Mom coughing got us to focus back on her as we were talking between the two of us.
"So you finally got your wolf?" Mom asked as she continued to stand by the door.
"I did." By the way Mindy answered I could tell she was hesitant to reply, or she is shy about telling other people. The only reason she exclaimed she did have a wolf is probably because mom saw her eye color change to mine. She must have not known parents naturally know when their child receives their wolf because they can smell their new scent. This only works for family, where people outside of the family cannot.
"I'm so happy for you! I thought that it was never going to happen! My wolf is going crazy right now." Mom gave a kiss on our head and walked to the kitchen where she placed her purse onto the table and patted the seat next to her to sit down. "So what do you say if the minute you transform into your wolf we go on a run together?"
"Yes. Yes!" I tried to say as loud as I could.
I could hear Mindy laughing. "I think my wolf would like that very much."
"That's good to hear, so now i'm going to start preparing dinner." She starting walking away and looked back one more time to give us a smile before disappearing around the corner. Mindy went back to her backpack.
"So what do you think of her?" Mindy asked.
"I think she is amazing." Happiness I could feel from not just me, but Mindy.
Mindy started pulling out papers from her backpack and doing work that I was not interested in, especially a paper with a bunch of numbers. Just looking at it made my head spin, there was also letters mixed into the equations that just made me more confused. I didn't want to ask her how she solved the problems, because I don't think it is that important.
The aroma of tomato sauce reached my nose making me feel extremely hyper. I couldn't feel hunger, but I could feel my human's hunger, and what she feels always transfers over to me. I even heard a strange noise come from her stomach. Yep, she is hungry.
"Want to go see if the food is ready?" I asked.
"Sure."
We put our stuff back in the backpack and started following the smell, until the front door opened. The noise making my ears--the hearing in the room--more hyper aware on what was going on. Mindy didn't even flinch as the man walked into the house. I wanted to growl at him to step back as he got closer, but I didn't have that ability until we shifted.
Mindy let the man hug her, which made me even more confused. His scent was not familiar at all. He must be an intruder, but why was he acting friendly? I wanted to pull away from him, but I didn't know how to get control of her body again, and she seemed very relaxed about the situation.
"Why are you being so friendly around this man! He is an intruder!"
"No, he is not. He is my dad."
"What?!"
I would be able to smell him if he was my dad. As I was saying before, werewolfs always know who their family is by smell, and also by looking each other in the eyes. Its also the same way we know if someone is our mate or not. This man was not familiar in either of those categories. And if my nose was correct, he wasn't a werewolf either. He is human.
Human's are not suppose to know about werewolves! The man must be lying about being her dad! I don't know if I should tell her or not, but so far he didn't seem too threatening.
"yeah, I know it's weird." When I didn't answer right away she continued, "I promise I will explain everything to you after dinner.
"No it's not just that--"
"Are you using your mind link with your wolf." Mom walked through the room of the kitchen to where we are.
"How did you know?"
"Well you are hugging your dad longer than usual and your eyes have been looking at a table that we have had for years, I doubt it is that interesting."
Mindy pulled away from the hug and just by the way her mom was laughing I knew Mindy was blushing. I couldn't stop her mom's words from echoing in my head though, she had said "dad." How was that possible though if I had no connection to the man at all, but mom did? Only two werewolves could have a werewolf baby. That's just how the genetics worked, but surely mom would know her own husband.
"Sorry, I didn't realise."
"It's perfectly okay sweetie, I will able to mind link you too when you transform into your wolf."
The man's eyes were a light green color as he looked over at me. "You got your wolf! That's great!" Again I confirmed that he was not my dad, I could still feel no connection.
This man also knew about werewolves! How is that possible! The werewolf race is very well protected so outsiders don't find out about them. I learned this all from the moon goddess.
I decided to tell her now, before our after dinner conversation. "I need to tell you something."
"Yeah, I know, but can we talk after dinner? There is a lot to talk about."
I couldn't wait, so I blurted out, "I don't think he is your real dad."
"Why do you say that?"
"He is human."
She sighed. "That is what I was going to tell you, my dad is human. Remember when you asked me why I got bullied at school? Well, the reason is because my dad is a human. So because my dad is human no one expected me to get my wolf, so they beat me every day proving what a lowlife I am. This is also why the Alpha moved my parents house so close to the border, because we don't belong. My mom had to beg the Alpha to tell her husband that she was a wolf and move so that they could move into the pack, so they wouldn't be seen as rouges."
"That's impossible, Wolfs can't have a mate with a human. That's not how it works," I exclaimed.
"That's because he isn't her mate."
I was in shock for the second time today. "What!?"
"My mom never met her mate, but she did feel the tug on her heart when he died. She just never met him." That's the thing about werewolfs, in our lifetime we can sometimes never find our mate. We can feel when they die, or sometimes one mate can die, and the other person didn't get their wolf yet, so they never know that their mate died. They will continue to search for their other half, but come up empty every time. Just the thought of it made me want to howl in agony. To never find a mate is torture.
I got sent to Mindy when she is 17, not when she was 13. Our mate could be dead and neither of us would know. I had to get that thought out of my head before my emotions went to her. I still had to keep up the hope that he was out there, and maybe I would get lucky and he would be the Alpha to this pack.
The moon goddess maybe gave me to a human and werewolfs child for a reason. At the werewolf world--the place where I find my mate--maybe I was treated different because all the other wolves knew there was something wrong with me. Maybe, it was possible for a werewolf and human to have a pup. Maybe, the husband had a mom that was a werewolf and a dad that was human, so he got some werewolf traits, but cannot turn into a werewolf. Maybe, the little traits he had got combined with mom's to make me. That would make sense, but then she told me that mom had to beg the Alpha to tell him about werewolf's, like he had no knowledge of them before. Maybe his parents just never told him. That was a lot of "Maybe" questions, but that was the only way it would make sense to me.
In the werewolf world the moon goddess told us that it was two werewolves that came together, maybe I was the exception. I still couldn't get the though out of my head though that this scenario wasn't possible. The reason I kept coming to this was his smell wasn't familiar at all, to me he smelled like an outsider. Maybe it was because he was human? But family should know family, right?
"Are you okay. Wolff? You have not said a word to me all dinner?"
I looked at the screen and saw a plate of pasta that was almost empty except for a couple of noodles. I don't even remember her starting to eat.
"Yeah, I'm okay, I'm just lost in thought."
"May I ask what it is about."
"It's about family." And that was the truth.
"What about family?"
I started thinking about her question, what was my problem with this man? That he wasn't family? But then again her mom called him, "dad." Then it clicked. He must be her step-dad! And her mom was dating a wolf and had Mindy, but then he died, so her mom started dating a human, and the man joined the family as her new dad!
"I have come to the conclusion that he is you step-dad."
All I felt was disappointment from Mindy. "No, he is not. He is my actual dad. I have it on my birth certificate and everything, I can show it to you if you want? Even though I thought you would be the one person that wouldn't try to find another reason for him being apart of the family. Werewolfs have tried before to get him kicked out of the pack for not belonging. Kids at school yell at me that I don't belong. I thought you would be different."
"Forget what I said before, I'm sorry." If there is one thing I never want to do again, it is to make Mindy sad. Looking across the table I could tell that the man loves Mindy, just by the way he looked in my direction. It didn't matter if I still don't understand, as long as he makes Mindy happy, that's all that I care about.
I decided it was a good time to change the subject. "It's a weird feeling to have people looking at me all the time."
"You know it's me they are looking at, they don't see you." I heard a laugh, and knew that things were good between us.
"They don't see me yet, but they will." She went silent, and I knew it wasn't because she was talking to a parent. "Is everything okay?"
"I'm nervous." Already knowing I was going to ask why, she kept talking. "I'm nervous about transforming into a wolf. I saw some shifts and they were really painful looking. Does it really hurt that bad?"
"I really do not know. This is my first time shifting. I'm naturally just a wolf."
I heard another laugh. "Oh yeah, sorry for asking."
"You are fine, ask as many questions as you like. "So now I have a question for you, are you ready for school tomorrow?"
"No, but at least I have you to go with me."
"Yes, you do."
Grabbing the empty plate we placed it in the sink and headed up to the bedroom after taking a quick shower. She wrapped herself up in the blankets and turned off the lights. "I have one more question."
"And that is?"
"Do you think because I have you, I will have a mate? That I will find my mate?" She asked nervously.
I tried my best to not think negatively, "Absolutely."
So here is the chapter posted one day early! And that is because it is imperiously birthday! So HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And make it a good one!
This chapter I am not happy with, but there's always those chapters that make me want to throw my computer against a wall. I'm sure I'm not the only writer that feels this way...
As always Thank you for reading!
