Also...... chapter is unedited. Sorry guys. I REALLLY hate editing. Although I'm sure when the books are done, I'm going to go through and edit them.
ARLIS
Sophia laid on the ground for a total of ten minutes before sitting up and shaking her head. She looked at her dad and then at her brother before shaking her head and standing up. "Dad?" She asked. "Why are you locked in a cell?" She put her hands on the metal and whispered some Latin. It didn't do anything. Nothing at all. She didn't remember. She took a couple steps back. "My- my... I can't do magic." She looked at her dad. "What happened. She looked down at her dress. "Why am I covered in blood?"
Colin coughed and glared at his father. "Dad can tell you." That was the first sentence Colin had spoken in a while. Arlis understood why. The Kid had just lost someone he thought he'd be with for forever.
Sophia cocked her head in confusion. "Dad?"
Clay closed his eyes. "You're a vampire now, Sophia." He admitted. "And-"
Sophia screamed. "NO!" She yelled. "NO NO NO!" She stomped her foot and looked up at her dad with anger. So much anger for a little girl. stomped both her feet, crying. "Why did you take my magic."
What a brat. Arlis thought to himself. Gracie would never act this way. Ever. When she was with Arlis she was very well behaved. Arlis never yelled at her, was never rough with her, he just simply taught and she listened. Just like when Gracie wanted to teach him something, he sat and listened patiently.
The door to the basement of cells opened and Konrad walked downstairs. Arlis sunk back into the shadows, making sad eye contact with Becker. They were all screwed. It was Clay's fault.
Konrad saw his granddaughter on the floor, covered in blood, crying. He followed the blood to Clay's cell, where blood covered his face. Faster than Arlis's eyes could comprehend, he watched Konrad walk into Clay's cell and grab his throat. "Say good bye, Colin."
"NO!" Colin shouted.
Konrad grabbed a dagger from his side, one that looked very familiar, and stabbed it into Clay's heart.
Clay looked down at the blade and then back at Konrad. Konrad was crying, surprisingly. Arlis didn't know there was a heart deep down in his chest. Konrad dropped Clay onto the ground. Clay pulled the dagger from his own heart and threw it at Konrad. Konrad, who was already walking to Sophia, didn't see Clay throw it.
The blade sank into Konrad's back. Konrad yelled and then ripped it out with a wet kind of sound. Three different types of blood had mixed on the concrete floor. He turn to Clay, who was somehow still breathing. Blood poured from his mouth, and Arlis had a feeling it wasn't anyone else's blood but Clay's.
"You shouldn't of done that, son." Konrad seethed.
"I'm not like you." Clay coughed out, his voice liquidated. "I'd do anything for my kids."
Colin had been yelling the whole time, but Arlis blocked his voice out. He was too focused on the scene folding out in front of him.
Sophia yelled and hit Konrad's back with tiny fists. Konrad turned back handed her. Sophia fell to the ground, unconscious. He continued his slow walk to Clay. "Good bye, Clay." Konrad took the dagger and stabbed it into Clay's head.
Clay fell to the side, dead immediately.
Colin screamed as Konrad laughed, his head leaned back like a classic villain. Becker was pressed against the bars, trying to reach out to Konrad. Of course, magic wouldn't work.
"It's so funny. Everything needed to kill me is in this room. A Hunter's dagger, Constance's to be specific, Arlis's blood, and Becker. And yet here I stand... killing person. By person. By person." Konrad unlocked Arlis's cell and walked in. He was obviously pissed beyond comprehension. "And I'm almost done with everything. All I need is for Arlis to go rogue. I need him to kill Kate."
Arlis shook his head. "Leave her out of this! The only way Kate is dying is if I'm dead first. Even then... you're still going to have a Hell of a time knocking her down. She's stronger than you or I, better."
Konrad laughed like he had never heard anything funnier, like Arlis was a comedian on a stage. "Arlis. I know you."
"Oh do you?" Arlis felt dumb taking the bait Konrad was throwing out.
Konrad smirked. "Yes. Kate has made you stronger. You broke my compulsion for a second, there. Because of her. And I want you to die. And I want it to be painful. In my book, the worst way you can go out... is knowing you're dying because you killed your mate." Konrad kicked the side of Arlis's face.
Arlis fell, not having strength anymore to get up. "You don't have to do this." Arlis cried. He knew he couldn't disobey Konrad in this state. He couldn't even if he tried. He was too tired.
"I like this. You begging. Too bad it won't save you. Or Kate." Konrad pulled Arlis's head back by his hair. Arlis tried to fight but his body was useless. He could barely stand at this point. "Audite me. Zoaz."
Arlis tried to hold it back, but it made everything worse. He felt a dark side come out from under his skin, felt his free will crumble underneath. His body was shifting and it was painful. He tried to crawl away but couldn't. The simple movement of breathing made him feel like he was going to die. God, he wanted to die. But he couldn't. If it were just him he would. But he had Kate. And Gracie. And Lilly. And Jake.
His chains snapped, not even being held down could stop a man from going Rogue. And Arlis had a feeling, this time around... him going Rogue was endgame.
KATE
Someone had finally pulled me off Chleo's wolf. Chance. I had cried into his shirt as he picked me up, carrying me away from the scene. I had screamed and begged God to save Chleo.
I had watched Dalia pull Arlis's wolf's neck, Jonah pulling a leg. Leif had come and had one of Arlis's other paws in his mouth. Arlis had seemed to ignore the pain. He was going to kill the first person that slipped up. Whether it be someone he cared about or not.
***
I sipped a cup of hot chocolate that Chance had made me. He was shaken up but not as near shaken up as I was. He still had the strength to stand and maneuver. I didn't even have the strength to keep my eyes open.
Chleo was dead. And it was partly my fault. Not in total, but I definitely had some part in his death.
Jonah was in the hospital. Again. I thought Dr. Myshayla was going to kill him when he showed back up. He was facing wounds in very vital areas such as his thighs and his neck. He had multiple broken bones including three broken ribs, both legs broken in different places, and a cracked jaw. Melloni only had some bites and bruises, her arm was sprained. No medical attention needed.
But Dalia... did the most damage and received the least. I guess after I left, carried on my brother's back, Arlis had found his way out of the hold they had on him. Jonah had fallen to the ground, unable to stand due to two legs being broken in near half.
And Dalia... well she was already in a bad mood. And Arlis being a werewolf jerk didn't help his case. She had apparently growled so loud Arlis whined. She had taken him to the ground, rolled into the dirt and ripped a large chunk of flesh off. Apparently, she had him in worse shape than Seymour left him in. That he'd need a wheelchair and someone else to push him instead of a pair of crutches.
"You need to talk about it." Chance sat down next to me on the couch, tilting his head.
I waved him off, continuing to blow my hot chocolate. "I don't want to talk about it." I argued.
He sighed. "I didn't say you wanted too, poop-head. I said you needed too." He was trying to get me to laugh but I didn't even smirk. He was silent for a little while longer before he licked his lips, getting ready to talk. "You've been blowing on your coco for an hour. It's not even warm any more, sis." He took the cup from my shaking hands and set in on the living room counter. "It's five o'clock. You need to get some rest."
"Chleo is dead! Konrad killed him, Chance. He's dead. Not coming back. Ever. He... he never even found his mate." I buried my eyes in my palms. "That's a second child Iris has lost. That's..." I whimpered, trying so hard to stop crying. "And I just stood there and watched."
Chance wrapped his arm around me, squeezing me to his chest. "It's not your fault. Chleo would have gone after Konrad no matter who was around, no matter who told him not too." Chance took a deep breath, watching me with sadness. "We have Arlis back, Kate."
I managed out a sad laugh. "Yes. Tied up like a- like a- uh-"
"Dog?" Chance offered.
"Like a monster." I breathed out. "Like a monster." I repeated. I didn't know where Arlis was, only that he was contained. I couldn't imagine what they had to do to contain him.
Chance bit his lip, holding back an argument. I knew him and all his mannerisms. Any second now he'd get up and walk away, not even look over his shoulder. And that's exactly what he did. Chance got up and walked away, headed for the door. Only, when he got to the door he stopped and turned his head slightly. I could make out his jawline but not the actual features of his face. "You're not the only one suffering. Have you checked on Iris? Or apparently... he has a sister?"
I looked down at my hands. "No."
"Maybe you should." He zipped outside, walking alone to his house.
I rubbed my temples and stood up. He was right. I had things to do. I had people I had to check on. I had a pack to inform information too. I had... friends and family. I had people I needed to interrogate.
I stretched out and took a step forward, ready to find the people I needed to talk too.
***
I was in the pack house. People were gathered downstairs already and when I arrived the building was sent into a frenzy. People were losing their minds, asking me for answers I didn't have and questions I didn't even know should be asked.
I made my way to the front of the room, where a speaker's stand stood. A mic was on it but it wasn't on. I took a deep breath and cleared my throat. "I'm sure you all know me, or at least of me." I said, the room began to quiet down. In the crowd I spotted Iris and Anthony, who were surrounded by a group of people. I made eye contact with Iris and then continued. "My name is Kate Barron, and I am here to catch everyone up on what has happened over the course of several months." I calmed down, choosing priorities. "Konrad has been risen from Hell completely. Against his will, a man with a truly kind heart named Becker brought him up. Since then, Konrad has wrecked havoc among us. He burned down a house, killing two of our friends, almost killing four. Luckily the children escaped. He recently kidnapped Arlis." The crowd gasped and I almost couldn't continue. And then someone grabbed my hand.
I looked down and saw Gracie standing there, her eyes sad but brave. And it gave me a little strength. In the crowd I spotted Lilly, her cuts now scars, and Jake. If these kids could go through this, I could too.
"He came back to us, a Rogue." The crowd listened to me in fear. "Dalia, Jonah, Melloni... Leif... They all fought to keep Arlis down and now he is back with us. But it didn't come without a cost. One of our own distracted Konrad for just a moment, allowing us time to get Arlis back. Chleo Queens will forever be remembered for who he was. A friend, a brother, a good leader and one of the best people we will ever know. We are figuring things out, trying to help out who we can to take Konrad down." I turned and walked away, denying all questions being thrown my way. One I heard much more than I would have liked was, "Are we safe?"
I didn't know if we were safe. And that was the worse part. I had no clue.
I continued walking through the sea of people, all of them parting like Moses had commanded them to. Eventually I found my way to Iris, Electra sitting next to her. Electra wasn't crying, but her face was sullen. Iris on the other hand, was a mother who just lost a second child. Chleo's sister, Vera, was sitting next to her.
Iris stood up, and looked at me for a long moment. "Everything started going wrong the moment you got here." I hung my head. "But things are not going wrong because of you so don't think they are." She threw her arms around me, her head nuzzling into my shoulder. I squeezed her back, crying with her.
"I'm so sorry." I whispered. "So sorry."
Iris pulled back and kissed my forehead. She didn't say another word as she turned and walked upstairs to the office. Electra started to follow but I stopped her. "Who's going to be Beta now? After Anthony?"
Electra sighed and rubbed the back of her neck. "Me? I think. Either me or my son. Possibly Dalia. It's really up to you, Luna."
Oh I hated when things were up to me. I didn't show it but I almost smirked. There wasn't much of a choice at all. "Dalia and Leif are mates, and you're already general... so Dalia and Leif can take charge after Anthony."
Electra widened her eyes. "Wha-"
I pulled her arm to the side. "I need you to take me to Arlis."
Electra narrowed her eyes. "Both my husband and Jonah agreed that you, especially you, are not allowed to see him."
I crossed my arms, my back straight. "And what do you think? Are you going to sit here and listen to Jonah who is actually below you in ranking. And your husband, who you could knock out in one punch?" I asked.
Electra bit her lip, giving in. "I..." She paused and then shook her head, glaring at me. "No, Luna. I don't think you should."
I looked out into the crowd of people, all bustling about. The room was slowly diminishing. People were scared back into their homes, or people returning to their daily schedules.
"Do you know what you just called me?" I asked, resorting to the very last rope I had. "Luna. And you know what that means? You do what I ask. Take me to Arlis."
She ended up laughing at me. "You are so Arlis's mate. I'm not taking you to Arlis. He's in a very unstable position and you're changing soon, so you're also unstable."
Unstable? "Please, Electra. I need to see him." She had to understand. "You have a mate. You have a husband and wouldn't you want to see him?"
She huffed out a breath. "Everyone made a deal not to take you too him." She was at war with her self. Her general side was screaming at her not to disobey her people, and her mate side, her heart, was saying the exact opposite. She shook her head one final time.
And that was that. I had no clue where he was. I couldn't go see him, couldn't see if maybe I could bring him back. Nobody else was going to take me to him.
"I can't take you to him. But I can tell you where he is. All I said was that I wouldn't take you too him." She smirked.
I threw myself into her arms, hugging her muscled frame as tight as I could. "Thank you. So much"
She pushed away politely. "You can't tell anyone it was me. Even when this whole thing is over. You will die with this secret." She held out her pinkie. "Pinkie promise me."
I pinkie promised her and then she whispered it to me. Words I never thought I'd here. "Alpha Rylee is taking care of him. Talk to Alpha Rylee."
