Chapter 2
The wind whipped through Owen's chocolate hair as he fell off the window. The fall could easily hurt him, but all he could think about was the talking cat, or whatever other animal it was.
As he neared the end of his fall, he closed his eyes and braced for the hit.
Just then, he saw a shadow pass over him. Suddenly, he felt something bony and sharp grab him and lift him off to the sky.
Owen would have given anything away to take a peek at what helped him, but he was too scared. So, the boy kept quiet and thought about the talking cat with blue eyes.
The animal looked like any other cat, except the eyes. Its eyes had the same colour as the water in his books- deep blue. It shone, he remembered, from the moonlight like glitters.
The creature's voice was also very unique, but still very similar. It was, what he could only say was very cat-ly. It wasn't like the voice of a girl, a boy or an adult, but... catty.
Like the voice, cats use to meow. Soft, but strong.
"There, There." He heard the same catty voice again, this time it was close. He felt himself be taken into a warmer place and then a furry paw touch his hands. He was being lowered.
Unable to contain his curiosity any longer, Owen forced his eyes open. Much to his amazement and horror, he found himself back on the floor, near the window with two creatures peering at him.
One was the cat who scared him into jumping. Its eyes shone brightly at him, like the blue crystal his auntie wears round her neck. Under the moonlight, the cat's fur shone in a brilliant white. It stared at him in complete boredom and a bit of concern.
The other, new creature looked like a giant crow with a more thick and curvy beak and a shaggier beard than normal. It was black as the night and yet under the moonlight, it shone. Its black eyes stared at him with worry and concern.
"Are you okay, honey?" the bird croaked deeply.
Owen stood up and screamed in fear, backing away from the talking animals.
"Go on, scream some more. Let it out of your system." The cat suggested.
"How are you two talking?" He croaked like a toad, a scared toad.
"Well because God gave us a throat to speak from," the cat meowed." Lucky us, am I right?"
"Don't listen to him," the giant bird smiled, or at least seemed to smiled," He is an idiot. We can talk because we are not the creatures of this world. We come from the land of Cornucopia."
"So, you guys can talk?" He asked, still a bit dazed.
"Yes, genius." The cat snapped. He then turned towards his fellow companion. "Can we just get on with the task? We are wasting precious moonlight."
The bird sighed and nodded.
"Owen, darling," it began, " I am Ravena, the raven and he is Caton, the cat. We are the acolytes of the one that lives under your bed."
"What is an acolyte?" The boy asked.
"Oh for god's sake," Caton rolled his eyes, " it means an assistant. We both are the assistant of the warlock that lived under your bed."
"And today, you and perhaps your father, was it...?" Ravena asked.
"Yes."
"Umm-hmm. So you and your father spoke the magical poem that put him to sleep," she continued," Now spoken once, the poem is a welcome friend, but you spoke a little too many times. This made our warlock, Sir Medrano, fall into a very deep sleep. Now you see, Sir Medrano is the safe keeper of all magic and has many enemies who want to take over his role."
"Why? And what is a warlock?" Owen asked, yet again.
"Warlock is a man-witch. Sir Medrano's enemies are evil and once you are the safe keeper, you have all the magic under your power."
"And with that much magic," Caton took over," you can rule the whole world. When the warlock fell into the deep sleep, no thanks to you, one of his most severe enemies, Ubel kidnapped him."
"And so," Ravena continued," we need your help to save him."
"My help? You are the magical creatures. Ravena can grow so big and you, Caton, you too must have some power."
Caton sighed and looked at Ravena who looked back at him.
"Well, first of all," Caton spoke, " I have many powers, but secondly, magical creatures are not as strong as the monsters. I mean we can surely deal them with enough damage, but cannot possibly defeat them. I mean maybe we can but it is too risky. Hence, the need for your presence."
"But if two magical creatures cannot defeat this guy, how can a boy with no magic?" Owen reasoned.
"Well, I don't care all right!" Caton shouted, " you put us in this mess you help us. Do you understand me, boy?"
"Well," Owen crossed his hands and looked at him indignantly," I will not go anywhere. You cannot make me, its a free country."
"Well, not for me." Caton bares his claws, ready to strike the boy.
"Enough." Ravena came between the duo and tried to calm them down." Caton put away your claws."
"Fine." He hissed, retracting his nails.
"Owen, honey," Ravena cooed, "You were going to fall and get hurt, but I saved you didn't I?"
"You pushed me in the first place." He insisted.
"No one pushed you," The cat spoke up," it's not our fault you are so careless. Opening a window and leaning from it, whatever were you thinking."
"I thought I heard something!" The boy shouted at him.
"So you decided to become stupid, sounds fun," Caton smirked. He walked away from the bed jumped up on the window ledge, looking at the moonlight from the glass.
"Look," he spoke to the boy," I know this is none of your concern, but it is a big concern for us. If Ubel tortures the secret to safekeeping magic out of Medrano, he would take over Cornucopia. And knowing him, he won't stop there. He will come to your world. And he would take over it."
"You are bluffing." Owen said, " there is no way, that could happen."
"You are right it can't," Ravena spoke," the hole between the worlds is too tiny for a monster to get out."
"Doesn't mean he wouldn't try." Caton jumped back onto the bed and started grooming his paws. "He might succeed. Who knows?"
Ravena looked at Caton with distrust and then back at the boy. " There is a slight possibility."
Owen took a deep breath and thought about the problem. Two creatures from other world had come to seek his help to save their world. It sounded like an adventure he had only read in books. It would be a lie if he would say he wasn't even a bit interested. The boy bit his lips and thought some-more, eyeing Caton's curly, bushy tail that beautifully swung to and fro.
"Fine," he sighed," I will help you but I have a condition."
"Say and it shall be granted," Ravena squealed, clapping her feathers in joy.
"I want to pet Caton's tail."
"How about, you come with us and I won't dice your parents?!" Caton bared his claws threateningly at the indignant child.
"Caton!" Ravena grabbed the angry cat's paws and shook her head. "Don't be ridiculous."
She turned to Owen and smiled," We won't that honey."
"She may not but I would." Caton hissed, squinting his eyes.
"No, you won't," She spoke sternly, glaring at him.
"Fine." He scowled at the boy and put away his claws again.
"So?" She looked at him pleadingly.
"Fine." Caton spat his words like poison. "But only after he completes the job."
"Deal?" Ravena looked at the boy, extending her feathers at him.
"Deal." Owen chuckled, shaking hands with his new friend. "On to the witch hunt we go!"
