The Time For Amends
About a month after the festival, things started to lose the excitement Mercy once felt. She was getting ready to leave and continue her life as a thief. Something told her to stay a bit longer, though. Maybe she just doesn't want to lose her friends. Maybe she knows nothing outside of this village is worth it without friends. Maybe she prefers this life. It's quite hard to enjoy it, though, when your enemy goes into town again. Mark and a couple of his guards came into town again. Although, he wasn't there for the deal this time. He was there to make amends with his old friend and the entire village. He's made up with J'Torno anyways. Why not make up with an old friend and the village he lives in. Mercy was the first to know he was on his way. She was on the wall filling in for Jacob. When she noticed Mark was coming, she turned into Paige and ran to Daniel to let him know. Then, the two went to the gates.
"What do you want?", Daniel asked rudely. Mark didn't answer and turned to Mercy. "I've come to see Alicia and Jacob", he replied while still staring at Mercy. Daniel turned over to Mercy. Within this time he learned that sometimes Mercy will disguise as Paige. Mercy understood that he wanted her to fetch both Alicia and Jacob. Daniel turned as he said, "If anything bad happens you'll speak to me". Mark nodded. He stood around to wait. His guards were silently talking to each other. They'd occasionally get scolded by Mark for being obnoxious, but didn't care. They knew he wouldn't do anything drastic for talking without order. Mark never punished for the simplest of things. He'd punish for things like attacking out of command, betrayal, or extreme disobedience.
When Mercy came back, she left trying not to get involved. She knows what he's here for. After all, she was the one who told him what to do. Sure that was over a month ago, but things take time. Mercy stuck around to know what was going on. She watched as they opened the gates to have a more trusting conversation. "I've come to see if you guys are willing to put down this deal and be my friend. I'd do a lot to make sure I get my friends back", he explained letting his voice trail off. Alicia looked at him confused. She knew Mercy told him to do this, but since he thinks so high of his ego, she didn't expect him to actually do it. "You really want to put down the deal just to be my friend again?", Jacob asked extremely confused at Mark's sincere words. Alicia gestured for him to step within the gates. "If you want to be our friends again, you have to do more than terminate the deal you made. You have to prove to the village you're worth being an ally", Alicia explained, "But... we can't trust you if your minions are here. You need someone who you need to befriend. If you do not succeed in this, you can't succeed with the entire village".
Mercy was kind of getting what she meant. Mint understood entirely. Alicia wants Mark to befriend Mercy. "You'll need a new guard and that guard is a friend of mine. Mercy... will you come out and show yourself? Please", Alicia called out, "Will you?". Mercy walked out slowly changing from Paige to Mercy. "I'm out", Mercy sighed. "W-wait. You're Paige? Or is Paige you?", Mark asked a bit confused. He had a slight liking to Paige, but finding out she was his enemy confused him. "Paige is me. That's a simple disguise I made so I can travel. It was made because of the festival", Mercy explained, "Now... I'm assuming Alicia wants me to be your guard. If you agree, you'll be able to make amends with everyone and possibly understand my cause for my crimes". Mark nodded his head. He was a bit upset, but he gets to get his friend back and he can have a chance at having an ally village. "Keep in mind that you are not to arrest me in your time here. Maybe afterwards, but that depends on you", Mercy smiled. Mark nodded.
He said that he had the right to stay as long as he want without having to rule the High Court. They can handle themselves and if they really need help they'll go get Mark. Seeing as he is Mercy's enemy and Mint is an influence on Mercy just as much as she is for him, Mark will have a hard time befriending Mercy. He doesn't want to be her friend, but he wants to do it so he can be friends with Jacob. If his magical pet, Duchess, told him to make amends, then he must do it. Mercy showed him to the building she lives in. There were about five extra rooms. She showed him to a room that was close to hers. "Now let's establish rules. Rule one: You mustn't be rude to the citizens. Rule two: Any problems with you will go through me before being resolved. Rule three: I'm your guard. Rule four: You are not allowed to wonder around town alone until the majority of people like you. Now go get situated in your room. If you need me today, knock on my door", Mercy explained.
Zane walked out his room just as Mercy finished. He was going to make a comment that would possibly cause a small teasing war, but he noticed that Mark was there. Another person who will cause Mark a hard time in fulfilling his goal. "Why is he here", Zane growled. "Oh. So he lives here too. Great! Another person I don't have a good relation with. How wonderful!", Mark sarcastically scoffed. "... Well. I see things won't go good. A mutt, my protective familiar, my enemy, and I will not have an easy time being friends. Good luck Mark on your quest for getting back your friend", Mercy sighed. She knew it wasn't going to be easy for Mark. The entire village hates him. Why would he have an easy time? "You call him mutt? I didn't hear that at the festival. Why mutt? I mean, that's a wonderful nickname, but what brought up mutt", Mark asked. Mercy laughed before answering. "Oh you know. Werewolves are like humanoid dogs... so mutt was perfect", she giggled. Zane turned his attention to Mercy who was letting Mark know what he was. He wanted to tease her using what she was, but he knows Mark doesn't know she was an Eirr and that she can turn into a cat.
Mercy waved both the boys good bye and went to her room. She was tired and really wanted to sleep. Luckily, Mark and Zane were tired as well. They went to sleep too. When they woke up, they went out of their rooms and found themselves arguing. "Can you two idiots shut up? Take note it's not just you two", Mercy scoffed. She wasn't exactly awake. She wasn't even ready to go outside. "You look like a mess, my guard", Mark snickered. "And you don't act like one?", Mercy glared. She immediately shut her door and got changed. She and Mark had to go out and befriend one another. The best place Mercy could think of was the pasture near the building she lives in. It was in the view of the guard tower and not far from home. Mark stayed waiting outside Mercy's room. Zane left to hang out with Leo. He didn't want to be around Mark. "Now you're ready?", Mark asked. "If by ready you mean ready to have a terrible day with you, then yes", Mercy huffed walking down the stairs.
She led him to the pasture. She made a normal cake to eat there and took some apples with her. "We're going to hang out here", Mercy smiled. "Why here?", Mark asked. "Oh... because the guard tower is right there. If you were to do anything bad they would know", she smirked. "Why would I do anything bad?", he asked. Mercy shrugged. She knew why. He came because his pet told him to. His pet was Mercy. "Now remember... we have to become friends or else I won't let you go into town", Mercy huffed. "How are we going to be friends? I've been hunting you down and you've been hiding. We're enemies. Sucks that a pretty girl turns out to be my enemy, though", Mark smirked. "Oh... so you're saying I'm not pretty?", Mercy hissed. "Oh no... you are pretty... It's just, I liked Paige more", he said seeming as if he were trying to apologize. Mercy rolled her eyes. "Paige is just me, but blonde and brown-eyed", Mercy sighed. "So you're saying her personality is the same as yours?", he asked. Mercy nodded.
They talked for hours. Mark was generally the one asking questions and occasionally made Mercy mad. At first, he didn't even want her around. Now he wants to know a bit more about her. He's still her enemy, but maybe he could at least try to be her friend. "Now... maybe tomorrow you could go to the village. Your not as hard to befriend as I thought", Mercy laughed. "You're saying your my friend now?", he asked. "Well... I trust you and if you trust that makes us friends... right?", Mercy tilted her head. "I do trust you. I guess that does make us friends", he smiled. "Just as long as you don't hurt her, you're fine", Mint called out. Mark looked around trying to find out where the voice came from. Then, Mint jumped out of Mercy's hat and said, "Got it?". Mark nodded. He had no idea he was there. "Good", Mint huffed. Mercy grabbed him and put him on the ground.
Over the next week, Mark was slowly making friends. He had around half the village his friend. One of those was not Zane. He still didn't like Mark. When he saw Mark try and get close to Mercy, or Paige, he immediately saw him as an enemy. Now that Mark has to be with Mercy almost the whole time, he isn't really liking Mark. Mark occasionally got a bit too close to Mercy which made Mint and Zane mad. Mercy would push him away though. Zane tried to avoid the sight of the two. He knew they weren't all too special to each other, but he didn't like the two together. "Maybe by the end of the month, you'll be friends with everyone here", Mercy smiled.
Instead of the end of the month, it took Mark until the end of the next week. He befriended nearly the entire village. He decided to stay. He had multiple reasons for staying. The only thing wrong is the fact that Mercy still has to watch what she says. Explaining who her out of town allies are can lead to tragedies. Mark was seeming to try to get a bit closer with Mercy. Then again, he seemed like he only wants to tease her, but not as much as Zane. "You two can be annoying idiots", Mercy smiled looking at both Zane and Mark who were arguing over a piece of cake Mercy made. "Be glad I'm not like that", Mint laughed. "Oh be quiet", Mark snickered, "You can be like that". Zane nodded in agreement.
Mercy was a huge help to Mark again. She gained a new friend and she knows that what she said to Mark that one day wasn't meaningless. Took some time for Mark to surpass his ego to get his friends back, but he managed to make it in the end. Mercy was proud of him and the fact that most everybody in the village were able to be forgiving.
