05: Pain

Fallingpaw could only look on in horror as the scene unfolded.

Hummingbreeze ran to Squirreltail, shouting commands as she applied pressure around his wounds. Squirreltail's breathing slowly become shallower, few and far between, until, finally, there was no breath at all.

Fallingpaw's eyes grew blurry, she lost focus, not knowing if she would vomit or faint at the image in front of her.

Death. It was all Fallingpaw could see. It was surrounding her, grasping it's hold on her. She couldn't breathe, couldn't move. Her heart skipped a beat, light fading from his eyes.

Finally, she drew in a shaky breath, the words that could change the world escaping her mouth. "I wish..."

Before she could say more, Hummingbreeze's sharp voice broke through her head. "Get back, all of you!"

Fallingpaw took a few steps back as she watched Hummingbreeze turn the grey tom over onto his back. She then began to slam her paws down hard on his chest repeatedly. Fallingpaw looked on in shock, confused as to what she was doing, but deciding to trust her. Hummingbreeze was the medicine cat, she knew what she was doing.

All of a sudden, Hummingbreeze called out with a relieved sigh. "He's going to be fine! Some cat, help me bring him to my den- quick!"

Immediately, Fallingpaw stepped forward. "I'll do it!"

Hummingbreeze gave her an unsure look, before nodding. "Alright, Fallingpaw. Drag him over my shoulders, then support his head while we walk."

Fallingpaw nodded, and as Hummingbreeze kneeled down, she gently grabbed hold of his scruff, carefully pulling him onto the tortoiseshell. As Hummingbreeze stood, Fallingpaw positioned herself by Squirreltail's head. The two headed off to the medicine cat tree with urgency, yet caution.

Once they arrived, the she-cats carefully set him down in the spare nest of moss and feathers. Applepaw had already started applying cobwebs to Squirreltail's wound as soon as his body hit the soft surface.

The tan and white cat couldn't help but feel extremely worried for her mentor. "I-is he going to be okay?" She stuttered, not taking her eyes off him.

"I'm sure he'll be fine." Hummingbreeze stated, "Though I'd like to know what happened to him. Either way, he definitely needs some rest and that wound needs attention. You can come visit him later, Fallingpaw."

"Okay..." Fallingpaw said, managing to tear her eyes away from the bloody grey mess that was her mentor, and turned, exiting the den. She wasn't very excited anymore.

Fallingpaw looked around, her eyes wide in shock. She was standing in a field covered in a thick blanket of snow, as flakes of the substance danced down from the sky.

"B-but... It's greenleaf!" She said to herself, confused.

"And you're dreaming." A new voice added.

Fallingpaw jumped at the sudden sound, quickly turning around to face the other cat. Standing in front of her was none other than Pigeon's Wing.

"O-oh, hi..." She stuttered. "Why're you meeting me here?"

Pigeon's Wing was quiet for a moment before he spoke again. "To warn you."

Fallingpaw was even more confused. "Warn me? About what?"

"To not tell anyone about your wish." Pigeon's Wing stated matter of fact-ly. "If you think about it, with this wish, you'll be able to accomplish almost anything. A lot of cats might take advantage over you for that."

Slowly, Fallingpaw nodded. "Okay... I understand. Thanks, Pigeon's Wing."

"Hey, I'm just saying. I know a lot of cats aren't trustworthy, so just don't be stupid." Pigeon's Wing said, looking away. "I think it's time you wake up. Just... be careful, Fallingpaw."

Before Fallingpaw had a chance to reply, she opened her eyes. She was laying in the medicine cat's den, where she had come to visit Squirreltail. He was asleep when she came, so she must've fallen asleep waiting for him to wake up. That's a little ironic.

As Fallingpaw looked over at Squirreltail, she realized that his yellow eyes were now open.

"Squirreltail!" Fallingpaw exclaimed, rushing to his side. "Are you okay? How are you feeling?"

"Like I was ripped apart by an AshClan warrior, which is pretty accurate..." Squirreltail laughed dryly, though his eyes were glazed over with pain.

"A-an AshClan warrior did this..?" Fallingpaw asked hesitantly.

Squirreltail nodded. "Yeah... I went solo to patrol the border and got into an argument with some passing warriors... they just attacked and... all I remember is waking up here."

Fallingpaw could feel herself shaking. She hadn't wanted to fight AshClan before, but after seeing what they were capable of.... She shook the thought away. That would be dealt with later, right now, she would focus on Squirreltail.

Fallingpaw pressed her muzzle to Squirreltail's cheek, breathing in his fiery scent, mixed with the smell of sap and fresh bark. "I'm just glad you're okay..." She muttered softly.

That's where Fallingpaw stayed the rest of the day, until Hummingbreeze made her leave; by Squirreltail's side, keeping him company, and hopefully subduing the pain.
