On Freedom

"Congress shall make no law [...] abridging the freedom of speech"

They tell us that this guarantees our right to speak our minds

That this protects our right to voice our own opinions

That this is what makes our country free

They tell us that all opinions have a right to be heard

They tell us that all opinions are equal

And then they tell us that...some opinions are more equal than others

That some opinions are right

And some opinions are wrong

But if your opinion is wrong, they say, you can still say it

But it's wrong, they remind us every time we open our mouths

And we listen to them

We believe them

And those of us whose opinions are right

Believe we are free and why can't we see it?

And they believe that some opinions are wrong

And those of us whose opinions are wrong

Sit in our corner, wondering why we are there

If we can say what we like, why did they send us away

Why aren't we free?

And we sit for so long

As we stare at the wall

That we begin to believe

That some opinions are wrong

And then, at some point

Our numbers will dwindle

Until we all believe

In the collective delusion

That we are free
