The Secratary Beats Me Up

Tyler and I froze while Justin stared at us with wide frightened eyes, like trapped bird.

Then he jumped up and bolted from the room.

I was still in shock. Let's role down a list of what I was dealing with right now.

(A) Casey is not dead, or cooked like french toast.
(B) I keep having frightening dream that make no sense whatsoever, but it feels like they should.
(C) Justin, who I previously thought was the only normal kid in the school, just literally appeared out of thin air, and was probably lying to us this whole time.
(D) I kept getting these darned headaches.

I rubbed my forehead and leaned against a wall. Was a normal life to much to ask for? Apparently yes, because I just can't seem to get a break around here.

"Wait, was he just invisible? I thought he was a human." Tyler had one finger up in the air like he was still computing the scene.

"You saw that too? Good, it means I'm not going crazy right now." I groaned, banging my head against the wall.

Well, this made some sense. It explained his jumpy and distant behavior. It might explain why I couldn't read his mind.

"Are you going to go after him?" Tyler asked, breaking my train of thought.

"Why should I? If he's been keeping secrets this long he won't want anyone much less you knowing about it."

"So you're just going to let him run off."

I looked back at him, he seemed strangely calm and observant.

"Yes, I..." I rubbed my forehead. "I need to go take a walk."

By that, I mean I really needed to find a large open space, where I could cast my feelings about without fear of hitting anyone with their weight.

The biggest room in the School was the gym, so I sat up on one of the rafters. It was Sunday so nobody was here. It was up high and I could stretch out my entire wingspan and still have room, I lay down on my stomach, and tried to focus on different minds around me. Sometimes it could be a real pain having access to everyone's secrets when you just wanted to have decent ones of your own.

There was a girl far way who was worried she might burn things she didn't mean to, the fire in her mind was uncontrollable and wild. It made me think of the first time Genny had touched me. She had single handedly opened up my connections and her mind had been so colorful. I could remember all of the shades in there, very few of them her own. In fact, I could pick up on her mind right now, probably in her dorm. She was listening to music because the lyrics were scrolling through her thoughts. She always liked older music from before even the twenty first century.

I listened to that for a while, her voice adding a special ring to it. I will admit it, she had an amazing voice.

There I started to pick up on something more interesting. Jane Howard was talking on the phone in her office. I couldn't hear what she was saying, but from the sound of her thoughts, she was worried.

What if it doesn't activate? What if something malfunctions? What if it activates for the wrong person? Then I would have a problem, especially if someone connects the crime to me.

I sat up, confused. That didn't sound good. What did crime mean. Was she hiding something? Just like everybody else in this school. Should I tell Mr. Wales?

I sat up, if somebody was planning a crime he should probably know. Unless he was in on it as well, in that case I should probably keep it to myself.

I stood up, walking along the rafter, I was about to jump off when the sound of a door slamming stopped me. Someone had walked into the room.

It was Jane Howard.

She was talking on the phone again, or that's what I thought because she had her hand pressed against her ear, I reached foreword with my mind to read her half of the conversation.

The girl is on her way there sir, She thought.

Good, the plan is going smoothly, the weapon is in place and you have my permission to leave the building, we have a squad waiting to pick you up a few miles northwest.

I jumped, I had heard that voice too, and as I watched she dropped her hand, which had nothing in it.

She had been speaking with someone telepathically. I stayed as still as possible so she didn't notice I was there, and tried to keep my racing thoughts from giving away my location.

"I know you're there Will." She spoke softly and determinedly.

Just in case she was bluffing, I didn't move from my perch. Then to my horror she flipped her wrist and all of a sudden there were two small daggers embedded in the wood below my feet.

Hahaha, okay, she knew where I was.

I dropped down, and tried running for the door, but then my feet suddenly stuck together. Wrapped around them was one of the same ropes from when I first arrived.

I tugged at them and managed to get them loose but not before she was upon me.

I managed to twist out of the way when her fist slammed down right where my head had been. The wood splintered under her fingers. I gulped.

Jane drew back her fist again without a scratch marring her skin. All of a sudden I was really thankful for Mr. Wales self-defense lessens.

She launched herself at me again and I managed to duck out of the way and hoist her over my shoulder. She slammed down onto the wood with almost a metallic sounding ding! Then she was back up and slammed her fist into my gut. It was like being hit with a train, I flew backwards and slid along the floor.

Gah, that was going to hurt tomorrow.

I tried to push myself up but she was next to me in a heartbeat, way faster than a normal human should have been able to run. Jane grabbed the front of my shirt and lifted me up by the collar. I struggled and attempted to whack her with some feathers. She slammed me back on the ground and tossed me over her shoulder. I managed to twist around in mid-air and almost landed on my feet, but I ended up landing painfully on one of my wings, which had made a loud cracking sound when I hit the ground.

I was to much in pain to get up, and I was positive she wouldn't stop till I was dead. To my confusion Jane let out a frustrated roar and started tearing through gym equipment, I lay still, could she see me?

Don't move, whatever you do don't move. Somebody said in my mind.

I recognized it as Justin's voice, and wondered what in the world he was up to. Whatever he did, Jane left mumbling something about a weapon.

As soon as she was out of the room, I left out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Beside me, Justin melted out of thin air again.

I jumped, he stood up and looked at me as if he wasn't sure what he'd done was the right thing.

"Okay, first things first, Jane is planning some sort of crime, and it has something to do with a girl, who may, or may not be in imminent danger. Afterwords you can explain how exactly you do that." I pointed an accusing finger at him.

Justin swallowed dryly, but didn't complain. "On the way here, she said something about Casey? Should we check on her?"

"Right, Casey's a girl, that could be it."

We burst through the double doors. Nearly crashing right into yours truly, Tyler Santos.

"Hey! You found him, great, I just saw a crazy lady looking like she wanted to murder someone walking down the hall. She actually shoved me pretty hard, which I did not like, by the way."

Justin and I shared a look. Murder? Could that be the crime she was planning? Was Jane going to kill someone?

I started walking faster.
