Close Call
"Now, I want to go one on one with each of you, let's see, William, you're our honorary new student why don't you go first." Then I was back up in front of everyone, and instructed to take my shoes off as everyone moved to a squishy mat.
"Now," he put his fists up. "Come at me."
I shrugged, running forward, then ducked last second to barrel into his gut. To my surprise he was no longer there when I hit him.
There was a pop, and I twisted around to see Mr. Wales was standing behind me, perfectly fine and not even winded. He blew the hair from his face and smiled at me.
"You're going to have to do better than that." Some kids chuckled in the background and I stood a little straighter.
I ran at him again, this time jumping over him and aiming for his shoulders, wings out for balance. But he disappeared out from below me before I could even touch him. I yelped and my wings instantly whipped out to their full fifteen feet of length. Gliding back around he was standing up facing me. Without losing momentum I head straight him, and then he ducked. I caught what he did this time, it was like he simply knew I was coming.
I pulled up sharply and stalled, falling back on the mat and bruising my bottom. And Mr. Wales was standing behind me, red in the face. He reached down a hand and pulled me up to my feet.
"Don't worry, no one ever managed to get a touch on Mr. Wales before." Genny comforted me when I went to get a drink of water.
"Oh, well now I don't feel so bad," I smiled at her and she laughed. I got that fuzzy feeling in my chest again.
"Oh, everyone else do one on one with a partner, and for goodness sakes Justin come in." Mr. Wales yelled across the room.
I glanced over to see Justin had entered the room. As soon as the spotlight was on him he turned the color of a tomato. Then walked over to us ignoring the crowed which had partnered up.
"Hey," he waved.
"He's just here for self-defense lessons, seeing how he's the only normal kid here." Genny whispered in my ear.
"About time, you missed Will getting his butt kicked." Genny laughed.
"Hey!" I protested indignantly, while Justin chuckled.
"Group of three, it's an odd number," Justin called out, stealing a smaller mat from some other kids that had appeared.
I shrugged at Genny, and she peeled off her shoes to join the other guy. I followed, taking note the room had a low rafter, which could be used to my advantage. Justin raised his fists, and I copied him, not really knowing the correct position and I probably looked like I was doing it all wrong. Then he started to circle me.
This I copied as well, knowing fully well I would lose miserably again. And amidst in my thoughts I barely had time to duck when Justin swung at me. Using my advantages, I jumped in the air, snapping out my wings and enjoyed the crisp fwoosh sound. This made me hover for a few minutes, then I dropped down on the confused Justin below.
He made an oof sound before crumpling to the mat with me on top of him. I practically crowed with triumphant pleasure. And then I rolled over, releasing my prey. He sat up slowly and it took a while for me to realize something wasn't right, his face had twisted into an odd shape and a pang of guilt laced through me.
"Are you okay?" I asked, reaching a hand down to help him up.
He sucked in a shaky breath, "fine, just fine, if you excuse me I need to go lie down."
"Do you need medical help?" I insisted, it was too easy to see he was not okay.
I pulled him up and he gasped, stumbling. This was when Genny, watching from the sidelines, noticed something was wrong. She ran over to us and slung his arm around her shoulder. Helping him up, her eyes instantly turned white, and her exspression twisted in pain.
Mr. Wales had come over to check on the commotion that involved his nephew. "What's going on here?"
"Justin's hurt." Genny explained before I could spout a excuse.
"I'm fine!" He spat, grabbing onto her arm and gripping in tightly, her eyes turned from white to a light shade of purple, and she stared at him.
For a moment Justin and his uncle shared a glance, then he nodded. "You know, I think it's best Justin comes back to my office, no sparring while I'm gone!"
He took Justin off of Genny and her eyes turned back to silver. We both watched as Justin hobbled out of the gym.
"That was so strange," she said, as we found a bench and were sipping some water.
"What?" I asked.
"His feelings, at first he was just hurt, that's what white means, but the he was just really, really afraid." She leaned back against the wall, and I would have followed suit if not for the large and rather awkward appendages growing out of my back.
"You think it has anything to do with whatever he's hiding?" I asked.
She sighed. "I have no idea."
And for a while we just sat in silence, waiting for Mr. Wales to come back. And all of a sudden Genny sat up straight like a pin.
"We could make a killing off a detective agency." She said.
I spit out my water. "What? You mean like, solve mysteries?"
Her eyes shone as she looked at me. "Exactly, normal people do it all the time, so with our gifts it should be easy."
I shrugged. "It's sounds like a great idea, when do want to start?"
Her eyes sparkled, and she grabbed my hand. "Right now."
Her eyes were green. And she pulled me along to a group of kids that had gathered and were talking.
"Excuse me, do any of you have a mystery in need of solving?"
