Casey Wakes Up on the Wrong Side of the Bed
We filled in Tyler on what had happened on the way to the infirmary. His normally quippy attitude evaporated with the seriousness of the events. There was a murder, supposedly being planned.
There was a bit of a fuss with some nurses who wouldn't let anyone through to see Casey. Then Justin pulled the, nephew-of-the-principal card, and they quieted down.
Casey had been laid down on a white. To my surprise we were not the only ones there.
Genny was sitting at her bedside.
"What are you doing here?" I asked concerned.
Justin snickered but I shot him a glare.
"I thought, maybe I could wake her up, or at least see how deep in a sleep she was." Genny replied. "Mr. Wales said I could."
I bit my lip, this was not the safest place for her to be right now.
"You can't stay here, something... something very dangerous is going to happen, and you just can't be here." I tried to convince her.
Her eyebrows knotted into an angry expression. "Something dangerous? Like how? I can protect myself you know, I'm at the top of Mr. Wales class."
I was about to object, but then the ground shook.
Cups of water vibrated, some falling over and breaking into shards of glass. Genny had fallen over and she yelped as one of these cut into her hands. After it was over I picked her up and started fussing over her scrapes.
"What was that?" Asked Tyler, sounding shaken.
Justin fixed his hat, "an earthquake, don't worry they're quite common around here, everything's bolted down."
I grabbed some of the gauze randomly lying around, and started to wrap her hands with it. She was giving me a determined look.
I watched as a drop of her blood fell, and landed against Casey's still form. Splotching her pale skin with red.
I reached down to wipe it off, when it sunk into Casey's skin and disappeared.
Woah.
"Is everyone all right?" Asked Justin, checking the rooms next to us. Tyler bent down to pick up the broken bits of glass.
I had managed to pull all the shards out of her hands, which were now bandaged and sore. She smiled at me in thanks, and I fought the warm feelings surging through my stomach while I was holding her hand.
I was holding her hand.
There was a sharp click, and a whirring sound, that strangely sounded like they were coming from Casey. I glanced up at her.
Her eyes were open.
All of a sudden, Justin gasped and disappeared into thin air, Tyler tripped and clutched the edge of the bed, breathing hard.
And that was the last thing I processed before all of a sudden my powers went crazy. I suddenly became aware of every mind in the school, as if they were standing right next to me and yelling at full volume.
It was to much, I clasped a hand over my ears but that didn't help.
It was too loud to actually process anything else. I began to see black spots. Genny was trying to talk to me, but she was distracted and her eyes kept changing colors.
What the heck was going on?
When I came to a point where the onslaught of voices was not as powerful, I stood up. the room around me looked normal, except Casey was gone.
So was Genny.
Of course Tyler and Justin had disappeared too, but I wasn't to terribly worried about them. In this school, what could possibly go wrong?
I was wrong, I was so wrong.
I knew immediately something was wrong, the place was empty, completely empty. Just like it had been in my nightmare, except the school was still intact.
It sent chills down my spine as I raced down the halls, looking for a human life. Memories of being left behind by so many people haunting me.
And to think back then my biggest worry had been Lucy Green. Ha, how naive I had been to the big picture.
I finally stumbled upon Justin and everybody else boarding the cargo plane. Mr. Wales literally had everyone. Teachers, students, even the pet guinea pig from science class was clutched between a little girls arms.
"What's happening?" I asked him.
He jumped. "Oh Will! thank goodness. Casey woke up and attacked the school. Everyone's powers went haywire, nobody could see me for a full thirty minutes, my uncle has started evacuating everyone to another location he has set up in case anything like this happened."
He dropped his gaze. "Tyler's still in there, he and Casey started fighting, I don't think he was fully in control of himself, it was like something had possessed him. He's still in there, nobody could calm him down."
My blood froze. "You're saying Casey attacked Tyler?"
He nodded. That doesn't make sense.
"I have to go look for both of them." I said, getting ready to run back in.
All of a sudden, children screamed. A girl in the middle of the crowd started burning, and the voices spiked painfully in my head, Justin actually faded into the back ground, but I could still slightly see him.
He looked down at himself and swallowed. "If Casey is doing this she must be stopped."
"Are you coming?" I asked, turning around.
He glanced back at the throngs of children and adults. Then he turned back towards me.
"Yeah."
Together we raced back into the building. I tried to reach out to Casey's mind, but then curled in on myself when all I got was the nails-on-chalkboard sound, and instantly closed down my connections.
So much for that.
"Are you okay?" Justin questioned.
"Yeah, but my powers are down, I have no idea where she is." I breathed.
"Just follow the trail of destruction, shouldn't be that hard."
Tyler certainly wasn't going for stealth. there were long claw marks across one hallway. A picture had been torn up, and the entire kitchen had been raided with several chunks of meat lying half-eaten.
"Wow." was all that Justin said.
"Yeah, he kind of looses it when he's angry."
"So he has like a Bruce Banner complex?"
"What?"
"Nothing, I'm a nerd." He sifted through some shredded cooking wear. "He goes through metal too?"
I nodded. Behind us there was a loud crash. Tyler came snarling in. I leaped out of the way but when he came close enough to hit me he just collapsed.
"I can't control it... It just keeps turning on and off." He said, gasping for breath.
I watched as his eye slipped from red to brown, to red, then brown, and red, don't forget brown. He looked miserable.
"You need to get out of here, it's Casey that's making everything go whack." Justin tried.
He shook his head. "That's not Casey. It may be her body but that's not Casey."
"What do you mean?" I inquired.
He held up his hand, in it was a slightly bloody mess of wires.
"She's a cyborg now."
I felt my blood go cold. It was like witnessing her death all over again. Only this time it was worse.
"A cy...." I trailed off, leaning against one of the food counters. This was just like my nightmare, I reached up and brushed the wound on my neck gently.
"That's right." Announced a voice directly in front of me.
There was Casey, or the cyborg, staring at us with unblinking glowing red eyes.
"Casey is dead, thankfully we could still recover whatever bits of her were left." The eerie voice said hauntingly, even though her mouth never moved.
In fact it wasn't coming from Casey, it was coming from all around us, and inside my head to. We were being attacked by a freaking telepath.
Before I had even formulated an attack, Tyler launched himself at her. She saw it coming and caught him, throwing him against a wall where he knocked several pots to the floor, groaning.
I picked up a pot and threw it at Casey. She caught that to and sent it spinning right where my head had been. It cracked the tile wall behind her.
Then all heck broke loose.
Tyler was back up, I was not sure how sane he was right now but he managed to sink his claws into Casey's back and wouldn't let go. I had taking a frying pan and smashed one of her feet with it. Though it didn't seem like she wanted to fight us.
Casey jumped clear over us and disappeared through the door.
I chased after her, swinging the frying pan through the air like I was throwing a shuriken. It missed her and banged off one of the walls. I growled in frustration.
That was when I heard Genny's screams.
I hopped into the air and glided down the halls, which was much faster than running.
Standing out next to a running plane, was Casey, holding Genevieve around her waist while she struggled.
"Will! Help me!" She screamed.
I took off into the air as Genny was pulled into the plane. I didn't recognize it, and it surely didn't belong to Mr. Wales. I was only about twenty meters away.
Casey threw something from the back of the plane, which was steadily gaining speed. A little metal ball, it flashed blue a couple of times before exploding.
I gasped and the voices in my head were amplified so much it hurt, and collapsed writhing on the ground trying to stop the noise.
When it finally died down, someone was shaking me shoulder. I opened my eyes to see several worried faces.
The plane was gone, taking Genny and Casey with it.
