Chapter 3

Destiny burst into the camp, her tail streaming out behind her. "I'm home!" She called across the clearing to anyone who was listening. A light gray head poked out of a den. Flower! Destiny darted over to her mother and rubbed her cheek against hers. "I'm home." She repeated. Flower nodded and gazed into Destiny's bright amber eyes. "You're home. Where have you been?" Flower asked, her voice hardly more than a whisper. Destiny didn't answer. She stared into her mother's eyes, willing her to understand. Then, realization sparked in Flower's green gaze. "Oh. Well, I'm glad you're home." She whispered. "I can see you've lost none of your speed." Snowy called from the camp entrance. She trudged into camp, her white fur dirty and clumped. She had never been a runner. Destiny giggled at the sight of her sister looking so unkempt. "Destiny." A voice barked from somewhere nearby. She turned to see who had called her name and gasped at the sight of King high up on the rockpile. His black and white fur shone in the sunlight, his amber eyes gleaming. Muscle rippled under his thin fur. He looked scrawnier than the rest of the Pack. He had probably been giving up his prey for them. King had always cared for his Pack no matter what. Destiny gazed up at him pleadingly. "I knew you'd come back soon." He said, his voice gruff. Destiny dipped her head respectfully. "Of course. Why wouldn't I?" She replied steadily. The Pack had crept out of their dens, gathering in small groups around the rockpile. Destiny glanced around at her Packmates, relaxing as she saw friendliness in their eyes. "Can I stay?" She asked King before he could say anything else. He nodded instantly. "Take out a hunting patrol and bring back as much prey as possible. We need it now much more than we ever did." He said calmly. Destiny nodded and gazed around at the Pack. Snowy stepped towards her, followed quickly by Fox. Destiny dipped her head to him and turned towards the camp entrance. "Let's go." She called over her shoulder to them. As she led the way out of camp, she heard the small patrol following close behind her.

Destiny pressed her belly low to the ground. She crept forward, pulling herself along slowly. She hesitated and glanced over her shoulder to see Fox and Snowy spread out behind her. They nodded and she stepped forward a few more pawsteps. The scent of rabbit engulfed her, its sweet smell making her mouth water. She could see it now, nibbling on some long grass at the edge of the meadow. Destiny took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She focused on her prey and darted forward quickly. She could hear Snowy and Fox splitting up and racing away in different directions. Destiny raced forward, her paws gliding silently over the grassy forest floor. The rabbit jerked its head up suddenly and looked in her direction. Then, it tore off towards where Fox was lying in wait. Destiny slowed and watched as Fox leapt out of hiding at the last moment. He jumped towards the rabbit and lashed out with a paw. The rabbit swerved, struggling to escape as its hind paws flew out from beneath it. Fox leapt into the prey and sank his teeth deep into its throat. The rabbit went limp and he picked it up. Destiny watched as he dropped it at her paws. Snowy padded over from her hiding spot and dipped her head to Fox. "Good kill." Destiny said. Fox glanced at the rabbit proudly. "We should get back to camp." Snowy said, waving her tail towards the setting sun. Destiny nodded as Fox leaned down and grabbed the rabbit in his jaws. Then, she turned and led the way back to the camp.
