Chapter Fifteen

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Clarification

***

I could smell the Cullen's before I could see them.

The airport was crowded, and when you combine the various scents, sounds, and colors ten thousand people all at once, and give it to someone with heightened senses, you get something like this.

"I think I'm having a stroke," Embry complained for the fifth time in the five minutes we have been in here, I tightening my grip on his hand, although my eyes were beginning to unintentionally cross, and I wanted nothing more then to curl up in a ball, cover my ears, and rock back and forth.

"Same," I agreed, my other hand clamped around the collar of the hoodie, tugging it away so I didn't feel like I was being choked out. The sickly-sweet smell of the bloodsuckers got overwhelming as soon as one of them came in to view. I spotted the girl first, the one from Bella Swan's house. She wasn't smiling, although her entire face was lifted up like she intended to do so. Her nose rose in the air, and then she turned.

When her creepy golden eyes met mine, a light scowl tugged on her lips, and she said something so quietly that I could only barely make it out.

 "We have company."

The rest of the Cullen's turned around in perfect synchronicity, while their human counterpart spun in a full circle before she realized that we were there. Each footstep seemed to be louder and louder, until we finally stopped, right in front of the group.

 The Cullen's really are freaky.

"Greetings," the blond doctor, Carlisle Cullen, nodded his head toward us, and I nodded in return, brushing a piece of hair from my face. "What might we do for you?"

"We're here for Jacob," I began, feeling as if I might as well be vaporized on the spot. I could tell that Edward Cullen, the mind reader, was digging in to my head and I didn't like it. Lucky for him, all he'll find in there is a bunch of random math formulas. "He wanted us to check in on your loyalty to our treaty."

"Meaning they want to see if Bella is alive." Edward corrected, his posh voice spiking at my nerves until they were dangerously high. "Or, at least if she intends to stay that way."

"We're just here for the research," Embry spoke up, obviously mocking Edward's tone, and making me snicker quietly under my breath. Alice rolled her eyes, crossing her arms indignantly. "Not for confrontation."

Under different circumstances, I would have praised Embry for use of such a long word.

"None of us want confrontation." The older woman spoke up. She looked tired, in a flawless kind of way. It was all about facial expression, and majority of the bloodsuckers here were staring at us like we were something they found on the bottom of their shoe. Except for he tall, male, blond one standing next to Alice. He looked kind of... relieved for our presence.

I guess our scent would mask that of all of these humans.

"We need to speak with you about one of our kind who is after Bella."

"Victoria." I nodded, already knowing where Carlisle was going with this. "Every time she is on our  land, we chase her off..." I paused, smirking and cocking one of my eyebrows. "I guess she is both of our problems now, huh doc?"

"She is definitely a problem," Carlisle nodded, refusing to acknowledge my snark. "A problem that needs to be taken care of."

"As long as you stay on your side of the border, we'll work something out." I tried, my eyes drifting to Bella Swan's frail, iron-deficient, but still human body. The treaty says that the Cullen's can not turn a perfectly fine human into one of their kind. They still seem to be leaning dangerously close to it, however.

"We'll need patrols, to watch Bella's house at night and make sure that Victoria doesn't go near her."

My eyebrow raised further as I shared a look with the boy beside me. They seriously wanted us to give up the few precious hours of sleep we have to watch a human girl on the Cullen's land? Edward growled at my thoughts, taking a threatening step closer. "I'm sorry, do you have something better to do?"

I, not wanting this old-man to think that he is stronger than me, mimicked the movement, sliding my hand from Embry's so I could cross my arms. It was still kind of difficult with the small hoodie though. "Don't read my thoughts if you can't handle them."

"Why don't you try to keep your thoughts to yourself?

"Why, what fun would that be?"

"Stop it!" Bella's voice was tiny compared to ours, but she wedged herself into the space between us, making me take a surprised step back. "This is not why we are here!" She turned to look at Embry and I, annoyance clear on her features. "Sam is the Alpha, he will work something out with Carlisle."

Sam is also the most likely not to loose his cool.

I said one more thing to Bella Swan before turning and sauntering away. "Try to eat more spinach."

And then, my boyfriend and I turned our backs on the Cullen's, although I knew it wouldn't be for long.

 ***

I got a phone call as soon as I stepped into the fresh air.

 "Hey Paul-"

 "Shut up!"

I jumped slightly, as Paul began to talk so fast I could barely pick out the individual words. "It's Quil Ateara, he's phasing."

"What-" I took the phone away from my ear just long enough to tell Embry. "It's Quil."

"Wait, but Tony that's not it..." There was a long pause, and I heard Paul swear loudly over the other line. "Your sister... I think.... I think she is too."

My breath froze in my chest, and my eyes widened to the point that it hurt. Alyssa? I didn't even know girls could phase, much less my little sister.

 "We're on our way."

I turned to Embry, who was watching me with a mixture of confusion and worry on his face. I relaxed slightly, knowing that there didn't have to be any more lies from the people I love. That I didn't have to hide anything anymore.

"The rest of our pack is coming in, I guess."

And then, together, we walked off toward the rest of my family. Where the secrets ended, but a bunch of new problems were just beginning to resurface. I wasn't worried, though. I had Embry, I had my pack.

And that is all I really need.
