One Short Day
~3rd Person POV~
The next morning, Galinda, (Y/n), and Elphobus were working in Madame Morrible's quarters in order to practice their magic.
"Float!" Galinda shouted, waving her wand and pointing at a coin in front of her. It didn't work. (Y/n) waved hers around too. "Float!" She stated, but nothing happened either.
From across the room, Elphobus took his coat off and watched the two fail at their magic. "Float!" Galinda shouted and failed again. The blonde sighed and slid the coin off of the books it laid on and it started clinking on the table. "Stop..."
"I didn't realize magic would be so hard." (Y/n) furrowed her brows with concentration.
"Maybe it's harder for you to make magic because things have been kind of easy for you. So you don't need it." Elphobus stated, opening another book to write about his magic.
(Y/n) looked down in thought. Perhaps he was right.
The girl sighed and stood up, placing her wand on the table. "I'll try another one." The girl walked over to a shelf to fetch another coin.
Galinda watched her sister go and looked at Elphobus-- noticing he was watching her leave too before looking back at his writing. "Elphie... the other day when everyone fell asleep. When I woke up and the lion cub was gone, so were you and (Y/n)."
(Y/n) slowly turned to them and Elphobus looked up from his paper and shrugged at Galinda. "She just helped me rescue the cub." He quickly looked back at his paper and the blonde slowly nodded. "Right..." She muttered.
Galinda stood up and moved to sit beside Elphobus. "I would've helped you too if you needed someone. You could've picked me too." The boy slowly looked up and made eye contact with the (h/c) before turning towards Galinda.
"I'm sorry. We won't leave you behind again." Elphobus looked back at (Y/n) as she walked towards them with a smile.
"Mister Elphobus! Come at once!" Madame Morrible shouted.
Elphobus, Galinda, and (Y/n) rushed out of the room and saw Madame Morrible by the water. "There!" The older woman smiled at the boy, pointing at something in the sky.
Coming towards the school was a small hot air balloon with an animatronic walrus in it.
"Elphie, you've got to get down there. C'mon!" Galinda shouted, taking the boy's right hand and (Y/n) taking his left one. They all ran down the stairs to see what was coming for them.
"Mister Elphobus! I finally heard back from the Wizard, look!"
The boy stopped beside Madame Morrible and smiled at the little hot air balloon. The animal was clapping two cymbals together and there was also a penguin and a bird.
(Y/n) smiled at the little fake animals as Galinda gasped. "Oh...I-- cannot." She muttered in astonishment.
A small compartment opened and a letter titled 'Mister Elphobus Thropp' fell into the boy's hand.
"It's yours, open it!" Madame Morrible urged the boy.
As everyone watched with anticipation as Elphobus opened the letter. "His Royal Ozness, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, summons you most ceremony-ishly to his personal palace in the Emerald City." He squinted to read the small print. "This invitation is non-transferable."
(Y/n) and Galinda gasped at the opportunity.
Madame Morrible eagerly hugged the boy and Elphobus turned around and hugged (Y/n), which she happily returned. Madame Morrible yanked the two apart and smiled at Elphobus. "This is your chance. To make good. Of course, you'll have to prove yourself first."
Elphobus shook his head. "Prove myself?"
"Prove yourself worthy. Dearie, this is the Wizard of Oz! If he's going to grant your heart's desire--"
Elphobus still was unsure. "But-- prove myself how?! It's too soon, I'm not ready--!"
"Don't be so pessi-mystical. I too had to prove myself when I met the wizard. You'll find a way. I have faith in you."
(Y/n) looked over and her smile deflated a little. She still remembered when Madame Morrible said the opposite to her and her sister at the Ozdust ball.
Thunder started to crack and students shouted and groaned to hide from the rain.
"Not to worry! Weather is my specialty." Madame Morrible grabbed an umbrella and held it over Elphobus' head. "Mustn't let you get wet! Not when you're on the cusp of greatness!"
Galinda and (Y/n) ran over to a nearby umbrella with Pfannee and ShenShen.
Madame Morrible moved her hand and the clouds moved to show sunny skies and everyone clapped for her.
(Y/n) narrowed her eyes at their interaction. "What did Madame Morrible just say?" She asked the others. "That Elphobus mustn't get wet!" Pfannee and ShenShen shouted over the clapping.
"What an odd thing to say..." The (h/c) muttered.
---
At the train station, the large green train to Emerald City stopped at the platform. All the other students gasped and muttered at the impressive machine.
Elphobus stood on the end of the platform, wearing his all-black outfit from his first day. In his left hand was a black satchel and in his right hand was his hat.
"All aboard, the Emerald City!" The train conductor shouted.
"Elphie!" Galinda shouted as she ran towards the boy, Fiyero in tow. "Elphie, the train is here and it came with the cutest little man with a mustache. You've got to see him." The blonde smiled. "Oh Elphie, how will we manage without you?"
"You won't even notice I'm gone." Elphobus retorted. "You have (Y/n)..." He subtly looked around for the missing girl. "Where is she anyway? Not that I expected her to say goodbye to me. I mean, we barely know each other." He rambled on about the (h/c).
Galinda shook her head. "She has been so different lately. It all started that day Dr Dillamond was fired. I never knew (Y/n) cared so much about that old goat."
From the platform's entrance, (Y/n) ran up the stairs and looked for Elphobus. She had a little poppy behind her ear.
Galinda looked over the boy's shoulder and smiled. "Oh, there she is! She did come! (Y/n)! Over here!"
(Y/n) stood beside her sister and smiled. "Elphobus."
The boy smiled back. "(Y/n)."
The two stared at each other for a beat. "I'm happy for you." She smiled genuinely, no longer feeling any pettiness for his opportunity.
"Thank you," Elphobus replied softly.
Galinda smiled and placed a hand on her sister's shoulder. "Yes, we are both so happy for you--"
"I've been thinking." (Y/n) cut the girl off. "About Dillamond. And that Lion Cub. I think about that day a lot."
Elphobus nodded. "So do I." They held eye contact for a while.
Galinda looked between them. "Oh, me too! I think about it constantly. Poor Dr Dillamond--it makes one want to take a stand. In fact-- attention, everyone!"
Galinda ran to the group of students as (Y/n) and Elphobus stood together quietly. "I am-- changing my name." The students gasped.
"Your name?" Fiyero questioned.
"Yes," Galinda responded, tossing her hair.
"Are you sure?" Elphobus asked.
"Yes." Galinda tossed her hair harder. "Since Dr. Dillamond had his own, Goat-like way of pronouncifying my name-- in solidarity, and to express my... uh... outrage..."
The boy and girl shared an amused look and turned back to the blonde.
"I will henceforward be known-- no longer as 'Ga-linda'... but as simply... 'Glinda.'"
The students eagerly clapped for the girl as Elphobus and (Y/n) held back a snort.
Glinda turned to see (Y/n) and Elphobus smiling at each other and the blonde rushed back over.
(Y/n) grabbed the poppy out from behind her ear and handed it to the boy. "Something to remember me by while you're working with the wizard." She whispered and stepped back with her sister.
Fiyero patted the boy on the shoulder and quickly headed off.
Glinda huffed. "Where is he going?!"
Elphobus smiled. "Don't be upset, Galinda--"
"It's Glinda now! Stupid idea, I don't even know what made me do it!"
Elphobus shook his head. "It doesn't matter what your name is, everyone loves you!"
Glinda threw her hand in Fiyero's direction. "I don't care! I want him! I don't even think he's perfect anymore, and I still want him!" She looked down in realization. "This must be what other people feel like. How do they bear it?"
The other two chuckled.
The train whistled and the conductor poked his head out. "All aboard for the Emerald City!"
Glinda gasped. "The mustache man." (Y/n) turned around and grabbed Elphobus' hand. "Come on!"
The students cleared a path for the boy and clapped for him as he ran onto the train. (Y/n) and Glinda stood in the crowd and clapped for him too.
Elphobus looked back at (Y/n) and the two made eye contact again.
Elphobus put his hand to his forehead and wiggled his fingers.
(Y/n) smiled sadly and did the same.
The train started to move and the students cheered louder and waved the boy goodbye.
(Y/n) suddenly gasped and pulled a letter out from her skirt pocket, running across the platform with her sister behind her. "Wait!--" The (h/c) ran through the group of students. "Elphobus!" She held the letter out to the boy. "I wanted to give you this!"
Elphobus grabbed it and the sisters stopped running. "Bye!" They shouted in unison.
The boy looked and noticed it was a guidebook for the Emerald City. He opened it and on the inside cover, the girls wrote a message.
If You Have Just One Day in The Emerald City.
Galinda
(Y/n)♡
Elphobus smiled at the message and poked his head out of the train. "Come with me!"
The sisters looked at each other and turned to him. "What?!"
Elphobus held his hand out. "To see the Emerald City, and meet the Wizard!"
The girls started running across the platform. "I don't know what you're saying!" Glinda shouted.
"Get on the train, you're gonna miss it!" Elphobus laughed.
"We don't want to impose!" (Y/n) argued. "It doesn't matter, just come with me!" The green boy ushered them closer.
"We couldn't possibly, this is your moment!" (Y/n) shouted.
"We're coming!" Glinda intervened.
(Y/n) sighed and took Elphobus' hand, and grabbed Glinda's with her other hand. The boy pulled them onto the train and the three toppled over, landing beside each other.
They laughed together and dusted themselves off at the crazy last-minute thinking.
The train flew down its tracks to its destination-- Emerald City.
Elphobus stood up and picked up his hat before helping the (h/c) stand beside him. Glinda rushed beside them and gasped in astonishment at the train's interior.
They walked up the small staircase and took in the chairs, lights, tables, and food. Elphobus sat beside (Y/n) and Glinda was beside her sister, pointing at all the animals and things flying by outside.
A staff member approached the three and offered snacks to them, which each of them happily took.
---
Glinda was asleep on one of the plush seats as Elphobus and (Y/n) explored more of the things inside the train.
The boy pushed a button in the middle of a table and a compartment of glasses and drinks appeared, causing the (h/c) to gasp and take one.
---
Glinda danced around the train and picked up multiple guidebooks to the Emerald City.
---
They all huddled together as Elphobus read out loud to the sisters.
---
Glinda sat on another couch again, reading more about the guidebook, and (Y/n) laid across Elphobus' lap, taking a nap as he read a guidebook too.
He looked down from his book and smiled at the girl before looking back at the book.
---
(Y/n) was sitting up and reading a guidebook as Elphobus was sleeping with his back against her shoulder, his hat over his face to block out the light.
The (h/c) looked up and exclaimed eagerly to her sister and Elphobus. The boy jumped away and his hat fell off his head and to his lap. Elphobus looked around confused until he saw the Emerald City and stood up with the girls, rushing to the window with a smile.
"One short day..."
The three smiled at each other before looking back at the large green castle.
"If you only have, if you only have one short day.."
The train stopped at the station and the three rushed off the platform to be greeted by multiple Ozian train workers.
"One short day, in the Emerald City..."
"One short day, in the Emerald City..."
Elphobus handed his bag over and placed his hat on his head. He held his hand out for the (h/c) and the two ran down the train's stairs, Glinda right behind them.
"One short day, one short day, one short day, one short day..."
The three stopped and gasped at the beautiful architecture and citizens.
"In the Emerald City."
People of all kinds were walking around in various green outfits, going on about their fabulous lives.
"Emerald City."
Citizens danced around and a paper girl delivered newspapers.
"One short day in the Emerald City! One short day full of so much to do!"
Men danced together with an ostrich.
"Every way that you look in this city, there's something exquisite you'll want to visit!"
Balloons were tossed in the air and popped over the three students, sending confetti down on them.
"Before the day's through!"
Elphobus looked up and smiled. "There are buildings as tall as Quoxwood trees!"
"Dress salons!" Glinda added, all three standing in front of a salon.
"Libraries!" (Y/n) sang, turning to smile at Elphobus as they stood in front of a large and beautiful library.
Glinda picked up a snow globe of the Emerald City. "Palaces."
"Museums!" Elphobus spun a tourist stand with postcards.
"A hundred strong." The three sang together.
(Y/n) rushed over to a group of dancers and Elphobus followed her, Glinda in tow. "There are wonders likе I've never seen!"
"It's all grand!" (Y/n) gasped.
"And it's all green," Elphobus added.
They all looked at each other. "I think we've found the place where we belong!" They rolled their shoulder and linked arms, skipping over to another group. "I wanna be in this hoi polloi!"
Elphobus stopped in front of (Y/n). "So I'll be back for good someday."
(Y/n) smiled. "To make my life and make my way!"
"But for today, we'll wander and enjoy!" The sisters and boy harmonized, running to a salon.
"One short day in the Emerald City. One short day to have a lifetime of fun!"
Men and women alike were getting their hair, nails, or makeup done.
"One short day!"
The three spun around, their nails being taken care of, or painted. "And we're warning the city, now that we're in here, you'll know we've been here." (Y/n), and Elphobus smiled at each other, connecting the backs of their hands like at the Ozdust. "Before we are done!"
---
The three walked through the city and Galinda gasped and pointed at something ahead. "Free tickets to Wizomania!" The blonde ran away from the other two. "I can't-- I can't!"
The two chuckled and Elphobus noticed something in the corner of his eye. On a small stand, there was a Wizard of Oz pop-up book with the page turned to the man holding his hand out.
Elphobus put his hand out and shook the paper figure's hand. "I used to have one of these when I was younger." The boy told (Y/n), smiling with nostalgia. The (h/c) looked at him and smiled. "That's so sweet." The two looked at each other for a moment.
"(Y/n)! Elphie!" Galinda shouted as she ran towards the two, holding up a ticket. "I got us tickets!"
Elphobus looked at the book one more time before Galinda ran ahead and (Y/n) followed after, taking the boy's hand.
They ran to a mini stage and Galinda put the ticket into the machine. The three leaned back and waited for the machine to turn on.
"Presenting the absolute factual story of our wonderful Wizard of Oz"
The curtains to the tiny theater opened and inside was a little golden figurine of a man. "With nothing made up. Learn all about our great wizard's arrival from his balloon in the sky."
The young adults leaned in to stare at the tiny figurine and tilted their heads in unison.
"With his ability to read our ancient book of spells--" The machine started to malfunction. "The grimmerie-- the grimmerie..." The three leaned back in surprise.
A puff of red smoke flew out of the machine and it moved away on its own, revealing a large stage and a man with an orange wig stepped out.
"Long, long ago, before we can recall, there lived here in Oz the magical wise ones." The man sang to the audience, including Elphobus, (Y/n), and Glinda up front. The three were very interested in the play and (Y/n) rested her head on Elphobus' shoulder, snapping the boy out of his focus on the stage, and looked down at the (h/c) instead.
Dancers in all white danced around the stage.
"Ah, the wise magical ones..."
Lights flashed as if it was lightning.
"The wisest of them all!"
From the back of the stage, a brunette and a blonde appeared with two glowing wands in hand. Their dresses were unique and beautiful.
(Y/n)'s head snapped up and clapped in awe along with the others.
"We will not live forever, that I can foresee..." The brunette sang, walking to the front of the stage.
"So let us set all of our magic..." The blonde stepped up.
The brunette twirled her wand around. "In a strange and secret language..."
"In a book!"
A dancer popped out and opened a large prop. "The Grimmerie!"
"The Grimmerie..."
The blonde's wand light went out and she sighed, smacking it. She quickly approached the brunette and tapped wands, the light coming back.
"But time ticked ever onward day by day." The presenter sang. "And all those who could read it passed away..."
The stage fell below the women and they pretended to die.
"'Til one day, no one could...But the wise ones left a prophecy!"
The women appeared again and the trio clapped with excitement.
"In Oz's darkest hour though we cannot say when..." The brunette sang.
"There will come one with the power to read the Grimmerie again!" The blonde continued, purposefully moving in front of the taller woman.
The brunette glared and moved beside her. "And Oz, which had been sad and blah."
"Once more will sing a joyous--" The blonde started before the brunette threw her arms up.
"Ahh-ahhh-ah-ah-ahhh!"
"Look!" The presenter pointed to the fountain in front of the stage. The top opened up and a tiny red air balloon appeared. "A man in a balloon arriving from the sky, maybe he is here to fulfill the prophecy! But can he read the Grimmerie?"
People on stilts and women with fake broomsticks danced around the fountain. "This man who comes out of the blue is he the prophecy?"
"There's one way we'll know if it's true!" The presenter shouted.
"Fetch the Grimmerie..."
A projection of the Wizard appeared over the red balloon, his hat covering his face. "Omaha...Omaha..."
A woman in the crowd gasped. "He can read it! He must be...A Wizard!" The crowd cheered for the projection.
The two women walked through the crowd. "The prophecy fulfilled..." The brunette caressed a woman in a wheelchair's face. "What merriness he'll bring." The blonde continued, raising other women's heads.
"Now every Ozian raise a voice and sing..."
The blonde approached Glinda and (Y/n), as the brunette approached Elphobus. "And sing, and sing!"
The sisters vocalized until the blonde slapped a hand over their mouths and turned them towards a dancer.
"Who's the mage whose major Itinerary is making all Oz merrier?" The three stood in a line and held each other's waist, backing up.
The brunette placed a hand on Elphobus' shoulder and gestured to another dancer. "Who's the sage who sagely--" Elphobus started doing his dance. "Sailed in to save our posteriors?"
Dancers and entertainers of all kinds danced around the city. "Whose enthuse for hot-air ballooning has all of Oz honeymooning?"
"Ooh, isn't he wonderful?"
In big round costumes, men were splashing in the fountains.
"Our wonderful Wizard!"
Elphobus linked arms with (Y/n) and the (h/c) linked arms with Glinda. "One short day In the Emerald City!"
"Who's the mage whose major Itinerary is making all Oz merrier?"
Dancers spun around the three as they stood in front of the castle's gates.
"Who's the sage who sagely Sailed in to save our posteriors?"
"What a way to be seeing the city"
The three walked up the stairs in awe, as if they had forgotten about all the craziness and singing around them. "Where so many roam to!"
The dancers slowly came to a stop to watch.
"We'll call it home too." The three harmonized.
They stopped to stare at the palace... "And then, just like now, we can say..." Elphobus and (Y/n) harmonized.
"We're just two friends..." (Y/n) started, looking over to Elphobus and nudging him.
"Two Good friends." Elphobus continued, nudging the girl back.
(Y/n) smiled at him. "Two best friends..."
Elphobus smiled back, nodding in agreement.
Glinda looked between the two and smiled.
They all ran up the stairs to a guard.
"Sharing one wonderful-- One short..."
Elphobus handed the man the letter.
The guard opened the letter, stared at it, and turned to a guard in charge of the gate.
The dancers froze to see if the three would walk inside the palace.
Another redheaded man approached and they nodded.
"The wizard will see you now!" The gatekeeper shouted with a smile.
The three smiled brightly and ran through the opened gates as the dancers continued in the city, fireworks going off around the castle.
"Day!"
