No One Mourns The Wicked
~3rd Person POV~
"Exactly how dead is he?"
A bucket of water laid on its side in a dark and eerie room, everything inside destroyed and almost abandoned.
"Because there has been so much rumors, speculation... let us tell you the whole story."
Blue feathers were scattered across the floor.
A poster of the Wicked Wizard of the West was discarded a few feet away.
"According to the time dragon's clock, the melting occurred at the 13th hour, the direct result of a bucket of water thrown by a female child."
A large puddle of water shined in front of a window with a pointy black hat in the middle of the liquid, steam rising from the hat.
"Yes. The Wicked Wizard of the West is dead."
Blue-winged monkeys crashed through the large window and out of the castle, taking off across the land.
From below, a mysterious figure was riding on a horse away from the castle.
A lion, a tin man, a scarecrow, and a brunette were walking down the yellow brick road on the other side of the land.
In a large tulip field, a group of munchkin children were running towards their village with bells in hand. "Good news, the Wicked Wizard-- he's dead!" A little redhead boy shouted.
"Come out, come out, he's gone!" Another munchkin child shouted.
The townspeople came outside with smiles on their faces. "Good news! He's dead!" The village people sang in unison.
"The Wicked Wizard of the West is dead!" Families and neighbors hugged each other at the news. "The wickedest wizard there ever was, the enemy of all of us here in Oz is dead!" They tore down posters of the Wicked Wizard and pulled boards off their windows.
"Good news!"
"Good news!"
"Let us be glad..." Glinda sang.
A woman pointed to two small figures in the sky. "Look! It's (Y/n) and Glinda!"
Two women floated down side by side in a bubble with big sparkly dresses. The one on the right had a sleeveless pink dress, and the one on the left had a sheer long-sleeved (f/c) dress.
"Let us be grateful..." (Y/n) added.
The crowd cheered at the sight of the sisters.
"Let us rejoicify that goodness could subdue the wicked workings of you-know-who..."
The (h/c) and blonde landed on a platform and (Y/n) lifted her small (f/c) wand out and broke the bubble. The Ozians continued to cheer for the good witches.
"It's good to see us, isn't it?" Glinda questioned, receiving more cheers.
The sisters walked onto another platform and looked at all the townspeople. "Fellow Ozians, let us set the record straight..." (Y/n) started, the Ozians waited with anticipation for the good witch's words.
"Yes, the Wicked Wizard of the West is dead!"
The crowd erupted in cheers and hugged one another.
"Isn't it nice to know that good will conquer evil?..." (Y/n) sang. "The truth we all believe'll by and by... outlive a lie. For you and--"
"No one mourns the wicked!" A Munchkin shouted.
The sisters furrowed their brows and looked at the singing Ozians.
"No one cries, 'they won't return'!" Another sang.
"No one lays a lily on their grave!" The crowd came together.
A couple grabbed two buckets and threw petals into the air. "The good man scorns the wicked!"
Children run around with lilies. "Through their lives, our children learn!"
"What we miss when we misbehave!"
The good witches walk into the crowd. "And goodness knows the wicked's lives are lonely." Glinda booped a boy on the nose. "Goodness knows the wicked die alone."
"It just shows when you're wicked you're left only on your own..." (Y/n) continued, her smile becoming more strained. She approached a little munchkin girl, gently took her pink flowers, and threw them into the air along with the other Ozians.
"Yes, goodness knows the wicked's lives are lonely. Goodness knows the wicked cry alone. Nothing grows for the wicked they reap only what they sow."
The sisters wave at the different citizens before spinning around and heading up the stairs to their bubble.
"Miss (Y/n)! Miss Glinda!" A little girl shouted. The two paused to look at her. "Why does wickedness happen?"
Glinda only smiled at the girl. "That's a good question. One many people find confusifying." She gestured to the large tapestry of the Wicked Wizard with bright red eyes and sharp teeth. "Are people born wicked? Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?"
(Y/n) looked back at the crowd. "After all, the wicked wizard had a childhood. He had a father who by the way, had been appointed the governor of munchkin land."
YEARS AGO...
"I'm off to the assembly, dear!" Elphobus's father called to his wife. He had brown hair and a matching beard with a tophat on his head.
"And he had a mother as so many do."
The man caressed his wife's cheek. "How I hate to go and leave you lonely..." The mother who had dark skin and short black hair only shook her head. "That's alright it's only just one night."
The man kissed his wife and placed his hand over his heart. "But know that you're here in my heart while I'm out of your sight..." He walked out the door and the wife's smile dropped as she untied the shawl around her chest and approached the back door of their home.
"And, like every family, they had their secrets.." Glinda stated.
The mother opened the door and pulled in an unknown figure with a green vial in their hand. The mother had a sip of the drink before handing it back and pulling off the man's tie.
"Have another drink my dark eyes beauty, I've got one more night left here in town. So have another drink of green elixir and we'll have ourselves a little mixer." The man sang as the woman pulled his jacket off and had another swig of the elixir. The man sat the woman on the piano and pulled her across the keys. "Have another little swallow, little lady, and follow me down."
"And one thing led to another... as it so often does." (Y/n) awkwardly stated.
The mother screamed in her bed as she was in the middle of birthing Elphobus.
"But from the moment the wizard was born, he was, well, different."
Animals and midwives gathered around to help the governor's wife. A bear with a bucket of water ran into the room, passing by a pair of beautiful silver slippers. "It's coming!" The wolf doctor shouted.
"Now?!" The governor questioned.
"The baby is coming!"
"Oh, and how!"
"I see a nose." The wolf shouted. "I see a curl!"
"It's a healthy, perfect, lovely little--" The doctor and governor gasped and shouted in shock at the sight before them. "Oh, sweet Oz!"
"How can it be?" The wolf doctor questioned.
"What does it mean?" The governor asked.
"It's uncanny!" A midwife shouted.
"It's obscene!"
The doctor and governor stared at the baby. "Like a froggy, ferny cabbage the baby is unnaturally--"
"Green." The bear stated.
A little green baby boy cried in the midwife's arms.
Another midwife pulled out a flask and took a swig of it before handing it to the midwife beside her, the other midwife taking a swig too.
"Take it away..." The governor muttered.
The baby only cried harder and all the doctor's supplies flew into the ceiling.
"Take it away!" The governor shouted.
The bear took the baby and ran out of the room. The animal paused to look at the helpless little baby. "It's alright, little one. I'll look after you." The baby calmed down and its chocolate-colored eyes stared at the bear and smiled.
"So his nanny, Dulcibear, raised him. And as he grew, so did... his challenges."
A few years later, young Elphobus flipped through his pop-up book in the garden. He had little curly black hair and round glasses perched on his green nose. He had an all-black outfit that he seemed to wear often.
"Dulcibear!" Elphobus' father shouted.
"Coming governor!" Dulcibear called. The bear turned to Elphobus. "Little one..."
The green-skinned boy looked at his caretaker. "Watch your baby sister just a clock tick." The bear quickly got up to see what the governor needed.
In front of Elphobus was his little sister, Nessarose, who was wheelchair-bound. Nessa was only four years old with matching curly hair and light brown skin. The boy approached his sister with a pink flower. "Oh Nessarose, don't you worry. I'm here." The girl looked at her flower. "Now, you wanna see something amazing?"
Nessarose looked at her brother. "Yeah." She responded in a sweet squeaky voice.
Elphobus showed his sister the pop-up book. "This is all about our wonderful wizard of Oz." He opened the book that showed mountains and a hot air balloon. "Do you know how we got here?"
"No." Nessa could only respond.
Elphobus peeked his head out from behind the book. "From the sky, in a balloon, see?"
Nessa smiled at her brother.
"Then he built a city made of emeralds." He flipped the page that showed the emerald city and in the middle was a skinny man with brown hair. "Cause he loves emeralds, even though they're green. And Nessa, you wanna know a secret?" Nessa nodded.
"If you get to him, he grants your heart's desire."
"Elphobus Thropp! Green on top!"
The two looked over at the group of munchkin kids making fun of the boy. "Someone run and tell him that everyone can smell him." The children laughed and Nessa started to cry and cover her ears at the children's behavior.
Elphobus stood up and glared at the kids as they continued to laugh at him. He clenched his fists and suddenly pebbles and dirt were sent to the redheaded children, causing them to all scream and run away.
"What have you done this time!?" Elphobus' father shouted in the background. The man ran over and grabbed Nessarose. "Now you've made your sister cry." The father quickly wheeled Nessarose inside the house, leaving Dulcibear and Elphobus alone.
Elphobus sadly looked down at his pop-up book which was now covered in dirt. Dulcibear noticed and picked it up, dusting it off a bit. Elphobus opened it again and the same page of Emerald City appeared with the wizard's hand outstretched and smiled.
"And so... it couldn't have been easy."
---
The townspeople made their way into the middle of munchkin land, dragging a large effigy of Elphobus behind them. He had his hat on his curly head and broom in his right hand with his long black cape behind him and a black outfit. Attached was a sign 'Kill The Wizard.'
(Y/n) let out a shaky breath at the sight.
"No one mourns the wicked! Now, at last, he's dead and gone! Now, at last, there's joy throughout the land, and goodness!"
(Y/n) couldn't look away from the sight as she slowly approached the statue. "Goodness knows..."
Glinda stood beside her sister with a hand on her shoulder.
"Ooh ooh..."
"Goodness knows the wicked die alone!" The townspeople sang.
"He died alone..." (Y/n) muttered, a small tear falling down her cheek.
A munchkin approached the (h/c) and handed her a torch.
"Woe to those who spurn what goodnesses they are shown."
"No one mourns the wicked!"
(Y/n) hesitated before tossing the torch onto the effigy, the statue immediately going down in flames.
"Good news..." Glinda sang, staring at the burning figure.
"No one mourns the wicked!"
(Y/n) tore her eyes away from the statue representing her beloved and walked away. "No one?..."
The townspeople danced around the effigy. "No, one mourns the wicked!"
"Wicked!"
The sisters walked onto their platform and overlooked the celebration.
"Wicked!"
The Ozians turned and clapped for the witches as they awkwardly nodded and cheered with them. "Well. As you can imagine, we have much to attend to, what with the Wizard's unexpected departure." (Y/n) stepped on a piece of the platform and a bubble reappeared around her and Glinda. "So if there are no further questions we're... gonna go."
A woman pushed through the crowd to get close to the good witches. "(Y/n)! Is it true you and the wizard were in love?"
(Y/n) put a hand to her ear. "What??" She put her finger up. "Sorry, one sec." Glinda popped the bubble for her. "What?"
The citizens stood straighter. "Is it true he was your love?"
The citizens turned to look at the (h/c) witch with curiosity.
(Y/n) froze and stared at the girl speechless. "...Love?.." She swallowed. "Yes."
The crowd gasped.
Glinda gently nudged her sister. "I-- I mean I did know him. That is... our paths did cross."
--
(Y/n) and Elphobus stood together at the Ozdust ball, the backs of their hands touching.
---
The two sat in a poppy field one day, side by side. Elphobus placed his black hat on his head as (Y/n) stared at him with a smile.
---
(Y/n) was lost in thought with a real smile on her face. "At school."
"But you must understand... it was... a long time ago."
