Dancing Through Life
~3rd Person POV~
The three made it to the library.
Students were studying on spinning ladders and bookshelves were moving in circles.
"And this is the book place." Galinda gestured around the room.
"Library." (Y/n) gently corrected.
"There is a collection of rare books around here somewhere." Galinda continued. "And some medium rare as well."
(Y/n) looked over at her sister oddly.
Fiyero stopped and looked around. "There's so many to choose from." He turned to look at a group of girls.
Galinda hummed. "Right." She flipped her hair and walked away with her sister.
Now in Fiyero's line of sight was Elphobus. He waved at the green boy, who only rolled his eyes and continued writing. Fiyero shrugged and walked back to Galinda.
"What do you do for fun around here?" Fiyero questioned.
Galinda and (Y/n) shared a look. "Nothing. Until now."
Fiyero looked at the two. "Ever been to the Ozdust Ballroom?"
(Y/n) shook her head. "But isn't it somewhat-- exclusive?"
Galinda quickly intervened. "We mean--scandalacious?"
Fiyero nodded. "It's all of those things. Also not far from here. Another plus."
They didn't notice Boq was listening in too hard and fell out of his chair, landing beside the trio.
Fiyero chuckled and held a hand out. "Are you alright?" He pulled the redhead up and shook Boq's hand. "Fiyero Tigelaar." He turned to Galinda. "Winkie Country."
Galinda looked him up and down. "Oh. Oz."
"Boq Woodsman." He stepped onto a pile of books to appear taller. "Of Munchkinland." Boq introduced himself.
"Great." Galinda quickly swept up (Y/n) and Fiyero and ushered them away. "Excuse us." Boq slipped off the book and watched them go. "What were you saying, about the Ozdust, and fun?" Galinda questioned.
Boq quickly chased after them. "Unfortunately it's against Shiz rules to go into town after dark..."
Fiyero cut him off by wrapping an arm around him and wrapping another around (Y/n) and Galinda. "Well, I see that, once again, the responsibility to corrupt my fellow students falls... to me." The prince stopped two girls walking by and took their books.
Two fell to the floor and Boq bent down to grab them before Fiyero put a foot over them. Fiyero shook his head to the redhead and Boq stood back up. "The trouble with schools is they always try to teach the wrong lesson." He wrapped the book he was reading around the sisters and threw it behind him, resulting in a loud thud throughout the library.
He suddenly did a flip and grabbed another book. "Believe me, I've been kicked out of enough of them to know." He kicked another book across the room. He went to two students and grabbed their books. "They want you to become less callow, less shallow."
Elphobus rolled his eyes. He couldn't believe (Y/n) joining in on this.
"But I say, why invite stress in?" He placed the books on the students' heads and a librarian shushed him. He twirled the woman around and kissed her on the forehead. "Stop studying strife..."
He placed the woman on a cart and rolled her away. "And learn to live 'the unexamined life'..." Students clapped for him as he jumped onto a table. "Dancing through life, skimming the surface."
He slid along multiple books. "Gliding where turf is smooth..." He grabbed a man by the hair and rolled it around. "Life's more painless, for the brainless." He pushed the boy away and pulled him back. "Why think too hard when it's so soothing?"
Fiyero stood back up and threw a book to his feet. "Dancing through life, no need to tough it." He stepped across more books. "When you can slough it off as I do." He took another book and threw it. "Nothing matters, but knowing nothing matters." He kissed two students on the hand. "It's just life, so keep dancing through."
He threw himself to the students and they cheered and lifted him up.
Nessa danced along in her wheelchair and Elphobus slowly looked at her oddly.
Fiyero pulled a level to a spinning bookshelf and made it move faster. "Dancing through life, swaying and sweeping." He swung himself into the middle of the bookshelves and lifted a boy up. "And always keeping cool."
He gave another boy a low five. "Life is fraughtless, when you're thoughtless." He pulled himself onto a ladder as the students watching cheered. Galinda took another one of (Y/n)'s books and threw it. "Those who don't try never look foolish."
Fiyero hooked himself around the ladder and spun with it. "Dancing through life, mindless and careless." One student was reading on another ladder, another was pretending to walk on it. "Make sure you're where less trouble is rife." The sisters and the crowd behind them followed Fiyero's movements.
"Woes are fleeting, blows are glancing!" He slipped off the ladder and approached the crowd. "When you're dancing through life." Everyone clapped for the prince until he shushed them.
He shrugged his shoulder and dropped down as everyone did the same. Fiyero danced with the sisters and picked the two up, placing them on a table.
Elphobus closed his book and turned to his sister. "I'm gonna go study outside, it's too loud." He stated and stood up to leave.
Boq stopped the moving bookshelves and the students jumped off it. Fiyero dipped another student and twirled them away.
More students danced around as the bookshelf moved again, sending a student flipping through the library. "Let's go down to the Ozdust Ballroom. We'll meet there later tonight." He approached Boq and moved him out of the way. "We can dance till it's light. Find the prettiest girl, give her a whirl!" He helped Galinda and (Y/n) down to the floor and twirled a student until Galinda put herself in Fiyero's hold. "Right on down to the Ozdust Ballroom."
He ran up a table and looked at all the students. "Come on, follow me. You'll be happy to be there!"
"Dancing through life down at the Ozdust!"
Fiyero jumped down and danced in the crowd. "If only because dust is what we come to!"
"Nothing matters, but knowing nothing matters, it's just life!"
(Y/n) danced with a group as Fiyero and Galinda circled each other. "So keep dancing through..." He twirled Galinda and walked away.
Galinda fans herself from all the dancing until-- "Galinda."
Boq stood behind Galinda with a red handkerchief. He pressed it against her forehead and threw it onto her shoulder. "Keep it, I've got many." Boq chuckled awkwardly. "I cry a lot."
"Thank you.." Galinda tried to walk away but he quickly pulled the blonde back. "I hope you'll save a dance for me tonight. I'll be right there. Waiting. All night."
Galinda blinked. "Oh-- that's so kind, Bick."
Boq gave a sideways smile. "Technically it's Boq."
(Y/n) overheard the conversation and zoomed over. "But you know what would be even kinder?" (Y/n) looked around and took notice of Nessarose sitting and reading by herself. "See that tragically beautiful girl? The one in the chair. It seems unfair we should go on a spree, and not she."
Galinda realized this was to help her and joined in. "Gee, I know someone would be my hero if that someone were to go invite her..." Boq hesitantly agreed. "Well... maybe I could invite her."
Galinda smiled. "Oh Bick, really? You would do that for me?" She placed his handkerchief back in his vest.
Boq nodded. "I would do anything for you."
Galinda stood there. "...Well?"
Boq blinked. "Oh, right now?"
"Why not?" (Y/n) questioned.
"Go ask her right now?"
"Why not? She's right there." Galinda ushered him away.
The redhead ran away and could be seen talking to the smiling Nessarose.
"You're good." Fiyero complimented the (h/c)'s quick thinking.
(Y/n) shrugged. "I don't know what you mean..." She smiled and left him and her sister alone.
"We love helping others," Galinda stated about herself and her sister. "Oh, and I happen to be free tonight, after all...Now that we've met one another..."
"It's clear we deserve each other..." They harmonized.
"You're perfect," Galinda stated.
"You're perfect," Fiyero repeated.
"So we're perfect together, born to be forever." Galinda put Fiyero's arms around herself. "Dancing through life!" The two ran out of the now quiet library.
Elphobus was sitting at a different bench, attempting to study. Nessarose wheeled herself towards her brother. "You'll never guess what just happened to me." Elphobus looked up. "What?"
Nessa smiled. "That perfectly adorable Munchkin boy just asked me out!" Elphobus' eyes widened a little. "He said he was too shy to ask me, at first, but then, (Y/n) emboldened him--"
Elphobus quickly shook his head. "Wait, (Y/n)?"
Nessa's smile dropped. "Don't. Don't you dare say another word against her! I'm about to have the happiest night of my life, thanks... to (Y/n)." Nessa wheeled closer to her brother. "Finally for this one night, I'm about to have a fun night with this munchkin boy (Y/n) found for me..." She gestured to herself. "And I only wish there were something I could do for her to repay her..."
Elphobus looked down in thought.
"Elphobus, see..." Nessa took Elphobus' hands. "We deserve each other, and (Y/n) helped it come true..." She smiled brightly. "We deserve each other, me and Boq..."
"Please, Elphobus, try to understand."
Elphobus smiled at his sister. "I do..."
In the dorms, ShenShen, and Pfannee tightened Galinda's dress up for the Ozdust ball. (Y/n) already had her (f/c) off-the-shoulder dress on with flowers, poppies, and lilies in various places. She sat at her vanity and put on mascara.
"That was it!" Galinda squealed at her dress. "Don't I look like the most scandalotious fish in the sea?" She squealed and sat at her vanity.
"The most!" Pfannee agreed. "Fiyero is going to lose what's left of his mind, and we nailed it."
Pfannee noticed something under a suitcase and investigated.
"That prince is certainly all brawn, no brain." (Y/n) teased her sister.
"Shut up!" Galinda shot back.
"Uh...girls..." Pfannee muttered, holding a pointy black hat between his fingers. "What even is that?" Shenshen groaned. "What's the reason..."
The sisters turned around and paused at the hat. "I know, it's our granny's," Galinda responded. "She always makes us the most hideoteous hats!" ShenShen poked the hat as if it was a strange object.
(Y/n) frowned at the judgment and faced the mirror. "I'd give it away, but-- I don't hate anyone that much." She shrugged. It turned silent and (Y/n) looked up in the mirror to see Pfannee and ShenShen giving her a look.
"No." She said firmly and turned around. "I couldn't...." She paused. "Could I?"
The door suddenly opened and Elphobus stumbled into the room with an armful of books. ShenShen and Pfannee smiled awkwardly. "Hey..."
Elphobus just stared at them blankly and closed the door.
"We should go," Pfannee stated. "Yeah, we have to go rouge our knees. Do a rouge." ShenShen said as they filed out. Pfannee plopped the hat on (Y/n) vanity and she glared at them. "See you later, Elphobus." "Yeah." Elphobus glared at them. "Bye!" The door closed.
Elphobus turned to (Y/n) and took a breath, placing his hands on the books that Madame Morrible gave him and (Y/n) stared at them. "(Y/n), Nessa and I were talking about you, and--"
"And we were just talking about you! How you should join us tonight!" (Y/n) couldn't stop talking. One look at what she didn't have and her pettiness took over.
Elphobus shook his head. "I don't follow."
(Y/n) smiled and brushed passed her sister. "You. Join. Us. At the Ozdust. I'm inviting you!" Elphobus took a step back and (Y/n) sat in front of him.
"Why?"
(Y/n) shrugged. "Well, because everyone will be there. And don't tell me you've nothing to wear, because you could wear this." She lifted up the pointy black hat beside her. "I mean-- it goes with everything you own." She gestured to his black uniform.
She hopped off the table and walked towards the boy as he backed up. "It's really uh-- sharp!" She lightly jabbed the pointy part of the hat into his gut. "Don't you think? You know black is this year's (f/c). You deserve each other, this hat and you!" She leaned in close to him. "You're both so...smart?"
She placed the hat in his hands. "You deserve each other, so here, out of the goodness of my heart..."
(Y/n) walked away and made eye contact with Galinda. (Y/n) frowned a little at the realization of what she had done but continued to walk away.
Elphobus stood there and seemed to believe what the girl had said to him. He stared at the hat in thought and smiled. 'Maybe I misjudged the girl.'
It was dark, and a large group of students snuck through the quad. "We're going to get arrested!" Someone whispered. Everyone filed into boats and traveled to the Ozdust ball.
At the school, Elphobus knocked on Madame Morrible's door. "Sorry to disturb you, Madame Morrible. But I have a favor to ask."
Fiyero placed a pink flower in Galinda's hair and the two smiled at each other.
Nessarose and Boq zoomed through the school to get to the boats.
The students shouted with excitement as they rowed to the forbidden dance.
The ballroom looked like it was underwater. Fish were swimming on the ceiling and students were dancing to the lively music the animals were playing. Fiyero ran into the middle of the dance floor and broke into a dance with everyone else copying his moves.
Galinda and Fiyero moved to dance together and (Y/n) danced with Pfannee and ShenShen.
Boq and Nessa sat on the sidelines with a drink and the redhead watched Galinda dance with Fiyero. Boq looked over at Nessa and took a breath. "Listen, Nessa..."
"Yes?"
"Uh-- Nessa? I've got something to confess a reason why, well... why I asked you here tonight. And I know it isn't fair..."
Nessa sighed. "Boq, I know why."
Boq blinked with surprise. "You do?"
Nessa smiled sadly. "It's because I'm in this chair, and you felt sorry for me-- well, isn't it, right?"
Boq blinked with surprise. "What? No! I don't feel sorry for you. You're great! I just... I asked you because..." He looked over at Galinda but the blonde pulled the brunette in for a kiss. "Because..."
He looked back over at Nessa. "Because you are so beautiful!"
Nessa smiled brightly. "Oh, Boq! I think you're wonderful. We deserve each other. Don't you see? This is our chance. We deserve each other, don't we, Boq?"
Boq looked over at the couple on the dance floor and Galinda pulled Fiyero off the dance floor.
"You know what? Let's dance." Boq held his hand out.
Nessa blinked in surprise. "What?"
"Let's dance!" He pulled Nessa onto the dance floor and the two danced together.
(Y/n) left the dance floor for a break and noticed Madame Morrible walking down the stairs. The older woman brought her pointer finger up and gestured for the (h/c) to come here. (Y/n) gulped and straightened her dress and approached the woman.
Madam Morrible stopped in front of Galinda. "You." Galinda looked away from Fiyero and jumped in surprise. "Me?" (Y/n) stood beside her sister.
Madam Morrible looked at Fiyero. "You can go on doing--whatever this is." Fiyero smiled and walked away.
Galinda tossed her hair and smiled at the woman. "Madame Morrible... seriously. I admire you so--"
"Enough." Madam Morrible stopped the girl.
The woman pulled out two clear wands and handed them to the two girls. (Y/n)'s eyes widened and gently took hers. "A magic wand..." She muttered in awe.
"It's a training wand." Madame Morrible clarified.
"A training wand for us." Galinda gushed.
(Y/n) smiled brightly at her future being back on track. "Oh, Madame-- how can I express my gratitude?! It is my heart's desire to become a sorceress. Thank you... For having faith in us!"
Madame Morrible stood straighter. "Actually, I have no faith in you, dear."
(Y/n) and Galinda frowned.
"This was your roommate's idea, not mine."
(Y/n) shook her head. "I don't understand..."
"Mister Elphobus has requested that I include you and your sister in our sorcery seminar-- he insisted I tell you this very night, or he would quit."
Galinda looked in shock. "Elphobus did?"
"But why?" (Y/n) muttered, as if she was questioning herself.
Madame Morrible grew irritated. "I'm a sorceress, not a mind reader! I've no idea why! But I cannot risk losing him. So-- here I am."
(Y/n) still couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"My personal opinion, dear, is that you do not have-- what it takes. I hope you prove me wrong. I doubt you will."
The sisters shared a look and turned away before Madam Morrible stopped them. "You might want to thank him. He just got here."
(Y/n) and Galinda's eyes widened. "What?" (Y/n) muttered.
At an entrance, Elphobus' figure walked down the stairs to the ballroom, wearing a fancier pair of black trousers and a black dress coat. He even wore the black hat.
(Y/n) walked through the dance floor, looking like she was gonna be sick. She realized what she did was not good of her.
Elphobus adjusted his hat and continued walking, catching multiple students' attention. The music stopped and everyone in the room turned to him. Some students started to laugh at him. For a moment, Elphobus looked embarrassed-- sad even. He took a breath and put on a blank face, pretending to not care that everyone was laughing as he walked into the middle of the floor.
ShenShen and Pfannee laughed and people moved out of the way to reveal a guilt-ridden (Y/n) and Galinda, each holding their training wand in front of them. Elphobus made eye contact with the (h/c) but she looked down at the floor. Nessa looked away too, embarrassed of her brother.
Elphobus took a step and removed his hat, placing it on the floor and walking away from it. He stopped and turned back around, closing his eyes.
He started to dance in the middle of the floor, ignoring everyone laughing at him and the lack of music. He placed his hands in front of himself then moved his hand to the side of his forehead, wiggling his fingers.
The crowd only seemed to laugh more.
The boy slowly kicked one leg out, then the other. He waved his arms around and threw his right arm out towards the crowd, scaring some students. He threw his other hand in the air and stared at it before placing his hands on his shoulders and swinging his elbows around.
He ran around the crowd as they loudly muttered and placed his palms together.
He bent down and picked the hat back up, covering his eyes with it.
Fiyero stood behind the sisters and leaned in. "I'll say this much, he doesn't give a twig what anyone thinks." He muttered.
(Y/n) frowned and shook her head. "Of course he does..." She whispered. "He just pretends not to."
The crowd continued to laugh and make fun of his hat.
"I can't watch..." Nessa muttered.
(Y/n) swallowed her guilt. "I feel awful."
Fiyero looked at the (h/c). "Why? It's not like it's your fault."
(Y/n) looked at Fiyero then looked at her sister. (Y/n) thought for a moment and knew what she needed to do. She held her wand out to her sister. "Excuse me."
Galinda took her sister's wand and the (h/c) stepped into the circle. The crowd laughed or cheered for the girl.
(Y/n) looked at the green-skinned boy and all she could see was hurt in his eyes.
The girl took a breath and tried to remember what Elphobus did. She slowly brought a hand to the side of her forehead and wiggled her fingers, the other doing the same on her waist, and kicked one foot out, then the other.
Elphobus continued to stare at her.
(Y/n) brought her hands down and looked over at her judging friends. She looked back at the boy and put her hands up, jumping to the left, then to the right. She twirled around and almost ran into Pfannee and ShenShen.
"What are you doing?" Pfannee muttered. "Stop," ShenShen growled.
(Y/n) narrowed her eyes at her friends and put her arms down. "No..."
She turned back to Elphobus and the two held eye contact, as if they were communicating with just a look.
Elphobus slowly placed his hands over his stomach and the girl copied him. She took a step and they brought their hands together, the backs touching. He brought his hands up and she mirrored him.
They quietly danced in sync, moving their hands around and bringing one up to their forehead, wiggling their fingers and kicking their feet up. They bowed and waved their arms around.
Elphobus held his right arm out and (Y/n) did the same, slowly bringing it around each other and looking away. Elphobus held his other hand up to his face to look at his green hand, tears now running down his face.
(Y/n) looked back at him and moved her arm up to wipe his cheek.
"It's okay." She whispered.
Fiyero and Galinda watched the two dance with wide eyes.
Elphobus and (Y/n) continued to dance and put their hands on their shoulders, waving their elbows around. Through his tears, Elphobus smiled at the girl, and she smiled in return. They spun around each other as they moved, not breaking eye contact.
Other students started to join in and copy Elphobus' moves.
The two waved their arms around like a windmill until (Y/n) jumped at him and pulled him into a hug. The boy didn't hesitate to hug her back and let another tear fall.
They pulled away and noticed all the other students were dancing too, directing it to the boy and girl.
"Dancing through life here at the Ozdust!"
Elphobus and (Y/n) smiled at each other and laughed.
"If only because dust is what we come to!"
Fiyero and Galinda were dancing too.
(Y/n) took Elphobus' hand and ran with him to the exit of the ballroom, gesturing for Galinda to follow, and she didn't hesitate to run after the two.
"And here's the strange thing, your life could end up changing, while you're dancing through!"
