Part 3: The Usual Suspects
Chapter 6
Day 3—After an early brunch at the Clocktower Cafe, 11:40 a.m. saw a testy Noll stalking ahead of the group, while a pissed-off Mai kept at his heels, saying in heated Japanese, "Naru, why do you have to be so rude all the time? It was just a misunder—Naru, wait up! Geez!" Then, just before Noll reached the landing, Mai sprinted the last few yards and grabbed at his coat sleeve, making the kid turn. "Why are you so angry? It was just a misunderstanding!"
"It's not always about you, Mai. Right now, I have no patience for anything else. So if you'll excuse me," and Noll walked up the steps as though on a mission from God to bring on the Apocalypse, then stopped once more. "And wait here for the others, and tell them I'm at the top floor."
Mai just stood there and sighed, watching him disappear up the steps, thinking, What's gotten into you, Naru? You never used to be this... impulsive.
Fifteen minutes later, a distraught Martin and Luella, and a perplexed Jacob and Bert came through the double doors and spotted Mai loitering at the base of the stairs, waving to catch her attention. At this, Mai turned and waved back. "Ovah here!"
When they reached the base of the stairs, Luella said, half-frantic, half-angry, "What happened to him? Is he all right? Where did he go?"
"He went upstairs, and I don't know what's going on with him. He just stood up and stormed out of the cafe. I thought—" Then she stopped, just realizing she had been speaking in Japanese. Damn, I forgot! Keep it together, Mai!
"Uh... Sorry, my Japanese is a little rusty," Luella said, smiling at her innocuous use of language at such an awkward time. "Can you repeat that in English?"
"I'm sorrhy," she said. "Naru went away, ahnd I tried to cahtch up to him. I thought it was something I said, but he said it wahs not like thaht. He went to the tohp floh befoh I hahd a chance to ahsk him why."
"All right, then," Luella said, looking back at the reception desk. "At least, Noll didn't confront Somina—wait! Where is she? She's not there!"
Martin and Mai, along with Jacob and Bert, turned their heads towards an empty reception desk where Somina usually stayed to handle book returns. In place of her presence stood a few concerned patrons still discussing the latest event that had occurred today.
At this, Martin and Luella went up to the loitering patrons. Martin said, "Excuse me, sirs. I was wondering where Ms. Somina Gavvers went to; my wife and I need to talk to her about something."
"Um..." The man seemed a bit indecisive, but eventually said, "A tall man and another woman came from upstairs and talked to her."
"The woman talked to Ms. Gavvers, actually," the other man said. "I don't exactly know what they talked about, but I think it's serious. Ms. Gavvers broke down and cried. Hope she's doing okay."
"I see," Martin said, thinking of his next words so as not to divulge the true purpose of his meeting with her. "Did she call in an assistant to take up her duties for the day?"
"Yes, she did. But we're still waiting for that person to arrive. We have books to return."
"Don't worry yourselves over it. You can always put your books on that side cart over there beside the shelves," and he pointed to a cart near a one of the closer shelves, marked 'BOOK RETURNS' in big bold letters.
And before one of the patrons asked, Luella added, "Just place your books there, and they'll be handled shortly. I know the librarian, so I can explain the situation to the replacement when she comes here."
"Oh, well, thank you, sir, ma'am," and both young men walked away, neither of them aware of anything amiss within the walls of this library.
As soon as the two were out of earshot, Luella said, "I don't like the sound of this, Martin. Somina's such a cheerful old girl; she wouldn't do that unless it was something truly serious. God, if Noll has anything to do with it, I'll—"
"You can't look after Noll all the time. He's his own man now."
"Yes, I know that already, but he's still our child." The words, 'our child', sent shivers through Luella's spine, as the memory of Gene's flashed across her eyes. "He's the only child we have left. I'll be damned if I have to lose him, too."
"Don't think like that, Luella. It'll only make things worse."
"But I can't help it. I have a really bad feeling about all this. I think it—" She stopped herself from saying what was on her mind, for the sake of keeping up appearances; but in the back of her mind lurked the shadow of the past—of those late-night phone calls and endless arguments. Of things left long dead rising from the depths.
The silence continued on the top floor. One minute... Two minutes... Three and counting...
Then the room resounded with a click of the door latch, all five members around the table turn around, and in walked a harried Martin and Luella, a pissed-off Mai, and a weary Jacob and Bert. All five of them glared at Noll for some reason.
"Noll," Martin said. "Why did you storm out of the cafe like that? It's not polite causing that kind of scene in public. Luella and I got holed up for nearly fifteen minutes trying to apologize for your actions to the manager of that place."
"I needed to clear things up with Ms. Gavvers."
"God, Noll!" Luella said. "Please don't tell you still suspect her!"
"Please, stop jumping to conclusions," Martin said. "That's not the way to handle things, Noll."
"Don't worry about it," Somina said, raising her hand up in a show of good faith. "He and I cleared everything up. Well, not exactly everything, but he doesn't suspect me anymore."
This relieved Martin and Luella, somewhat. At least they didn't have to deal with any more internal tensions and actually focus their energies on the case. Martin sighed and said, "Well, at least we're getting somewhere." He then spied the screen of Madoka's laptop and said, "What's that? Did something come up?"
Madoka traded a nervous look at Lin, as if asking if she should go on, and Lin nodded his head. So she took a deep breath and braced herself, saying, "Luella... Martin... You two need need to listen to this, because none of us have any idea what's going on with this," and she rewound the CD a few frames back and then hit play.
Just like before, the footage showed the man setting down the envelope on the countertop, taking out a wallet with his credentials on it and showing it to Somina Gavvers; as the camera zoomed in for a closer look at his credentials, he said, "My name is Stephen Giovanni of the Special Provision for Kira, acting under orders to give this envelope to the recipients Martin and Luella Davis."
Audible gasps issued from Martin's and Luella's mouth. At this, Martin, Luella, Jacob, Bert and Mai crept closer to the table to listen to the laptop's audio speakers. With everyone's eyes were on the computer screen, Madoka turned up the volume for everyone to hear the next part of the scene.
"Wait, what are you—?" Somina said. "If this is a joke, Mr. Giovanni, it's not funny. I could have you reported for impersonating law enforcement."
"Trust me, it's anything but a joke," he said, closing his wallet and putting it in his pocket. "We have you under our surveillance, and we could apprehend you at any moment if you do not cooperate. Your movements this morning have you under enough reasonable suspicion to warrant your arrest, if we so choose."
This left the woman speechless for several seconds on the screen.
At this, Madoka looked over at her friend and saw her biting down on her lower lip, sitting by the table's edge with her hand gripping hard over her knees to keep them from shaking. So she reached over and placed a hand on her shoulder, trying to calm down her friend, receiving a look of sympathy in return. Then Madoka looked over at Noll and noted the rigid set of his face, staring hard at the screen as of he was getting ready to thrash the man in the video. And last, but certainly not least, she looked over at Luella and Martin, both nervous as hell by the looks of it, both seemingly wanting to be anywhere except in this very room.
The footage continued.
"B-but why?" Somina continued. "I mean... What did I do?"
The man named Giovanni then leaned over the countertop, as though he were going to whisper something in her ear, and said in a lower voice so only she could hear, "You are under suspicion of conspiracy to murder one Eugene A. J. Davis."
Another louder gasp issued from everyone around the table. Everyone was shocked. Somina herself kept her eyes off the screen, focussing her gaze on the countertop and trying everyone she could to still the pounding of her heart.
The footage continued.
"What? B-but that's crazy! I didn't even do anything!"
Again, the man learned even closer, getting into her personal space to intimidate her into messing up. "We bugged your house, Ms. Gavvers, and we have all the evidence we need to convict you in our audio files if you don't cooperate."
"What are you talking about?"
"We recorded you talking in your sleep, and the words you said are as plain as day. We realize now that you may have been mind-controlled and that you weren't aware of your actions during the murder, but the fact still remains we have evidence to back up our claims, while you only have your own testimony."
"But... but... What the hell! You broke into my house without a warrant! I could have the cops arrest your for that!"
The man stood straight and glared at Somina, then said, "We're the S.P.K., Ms. Gavvers. We don't need warrants, and we are authorized to detain you indefinitely if—"
"Get out," Somina said, taking a stand against her accuser. "Get out before I call the cops. You're disrupting the library, and you're harassing me. Get out!"
"This is your last warning—"
"I don't care. Just get out! NOW!"
A hush came over the speakers, as all the patrons in the screenshot stood in the background and stared at the confrontation between the two.
At this last bit of defiance, the man remained calm and measured as if he had practiced his tactics many times on many suspects and said, "I"m sorry, Ms. Gavvers, for interrupting your day. I wish you good luck. You'll need it, I'm sure." And off the man went, turning on his heel and heading for the double doors.
The shot then switched camera angles and followed the man walking, confident and ever, down the lobby amid several groups of patrons staring at the man in utter shock and past the threshold to the outside. The shot switched again to another camera angle overlooking Katherine Street and the library's front facade where the man turned right and headed down the sidewalk to a black unmarked car parked by the curb. The man got inside, closed the door and... stayed exactly where he was.
"Why isn't he moving?" Lin said.
"He's waiting," Noll said.
"For what?"
"Beats me."
Somina said, breaking her silence, nearly breaking into tears in the process, "D-do you think he's waiting for me?"
Noll faced her and saw the fear in her eyes and the quivering of her lower lip, and when he looked down at her hands, he saw her gripping her knees so tightly her knuckles went white. He said, "Maybe, but I don't think that is the main purpose of his visit."
"Wait, are you kidding me? He all but slapped cuffs on me! Do you have any idea how it feels to be grilled like that? Do you have any idea how terrified I was? God knows what he would've done to me if I actually confessed!"
"Confessed to what? What is there to confess to if you can't even remember what you said?"
"Yeah, try asking him that."
"It's not about what what he believes, Ms. Gavvars. It's about what he knows, and I suspect that he knows some aspects of this case we don't, and vice versa. Whatever these people know, it's not enough to connect all the dots, and the lack of insight into the nuances of this case is forcing them to take routes they wouldn't take under normal circumstances."
"These aren't normal circumstances," Martin said. "That's why we all need to work together in this case. If we can somehow make contact with them and share our information—"
"That's not how it works," Jacob said for the first time; everyone looked at him. "This is the C.I.A. and F.B.I., two organizations infamous for keeping hold on their secrets. I've dealt with them before, and I can tell you from experience that they're cagey as hell. They barely trust enough to share information between each other, let alone with a foreign investigative body. And on top of that, this is the Special Provision of Kira, the provision that took down 'Kira' in Japan."
"But why keep secrets?" Luella said. "We can't afford secrets right now!"
"There's a reason why separate investigations into a complex series of crimes must stay separate. One investigation must act as a check on the other, so that neither investigation gets swayed into ignoring minor details of the case that could change its purview. It's the reason why DNA samples are tested in separate labs, and why any investigative body is divided up into devisions to explore specific aspects of a crime."
"But if we don't share our information, how will we know what's going on?"
"The truth is, you can't. You can only concentrate on what you know as you find them out. To obtain more information beyond that scope before you need it will only invite more variables into an equation before you can solve it. When we know as much as we can, we'll share our finding with them—but not until then."
"But there are two aspect we're all missing, both us and the S.P.K.," Noll said. "We still don't know how or why Reynard killed Gene. I suspect it has something to do with the whereabouts of the death ledger, but that's just speculation at this point. That's why we need a control of an impartial witness for the experiment."
"Wait, Noll, what 'experiment' are you talking about?" Martin asked.
"And who's the 'impartial witness'?" Luella added.
But instead of answering their questions, Noll turned to Jacob and said, "Mr. Meiler, do you know how to hypnotize people?"
His question took the old man for a loop. He just stared at the kid, wide-eyed and almost open-mouthed for the space of several seconds before responding. "Well, yes, I still know that, but why—?"
"Noll!" Lin said, standing up from his chair like a rocket off the launchpad. "What are you planning? If it's another one of your crazy stunts, I refuse to—"
"I didn't ask you, because I already know what you're gonna say."
"Lin has a point, Noll," Jacob said. "There's a reason why almost every police force around the world erased the use of hypnosis from their training manuals. It doesn't always work, and when it does, it sometimes has adverse affects on the one being hypnotized."
"So you won't do it?"
"Now I didn't say that; if I have to use hypnosis, I will. But I need to know why. What's your reason, Noll?"
At this, Noll shifted his gaze from Jacob to Lin, then to Luella and Martin, then to Somina sitting next to him, before returning to Jacob. He said, "Somina and I witnessed Gene's death, but only from limited perspectives. I don't know what happened after Gene died, and Somina has no idea how she even fits into this whole thing when she only remembers an incomplete perspective from a dream. In order to find out what truly happened between Gene and Reynard, I need you to recreate the conditions Somina and I were in when we experienced Gene's death in our sleep."
Jacob rolled Noll's words through his head for some moments, then said, "So you want me to hypnotize you and Somina to re-observe what happened when Gene died?"
"Yes."
"But, Noll," Martin said, "hypnosis is just the power of suggestion. It's just a heightened state of focus that depends on the influence of an outside source."
"That's exactly what I'm getting at," Noll said; when everyone looked at him completely stumped, he continued, "The power of suggestion depends on an outside source, and Reynard Malders has been that outside source all along. When I listened to Terry Haller's explanation of torture for mind controlling a subject, I noted the use of torture as the outside source that forces someone to switch personalities to become a killer. But this precludes the fact that Reynard must know beforehand who to pick; it has to be someone particularly open to the power of suggestion. During last night's briefing, when I shared my thoughts on those messages, they all shared the same connection of Reynard Malders as the outside source."
"I know where you're getting at, Noll," Lin said, "and it would make perfect sense if all the messages fit, but they don't all fit. Reynard intended each message for Father Carmyne, Jacob Meiler, Lean Gordon and even you, with the exception of Evan Moore. Evan Moore wrote that message himself to combat Reynard's... influence... over him." At this moment, Lin saw exactly where Noll was getting at. He just sat down on his chair and stared at the kid, thinking, Damn it! How could I be so stupid?
With Lin's words connecting the dots for all to see, he, Martin, Luella, Madoka, Jacob, Bert, Carmyne, Somina and even Mai were now on the same page as Noll.
As revelation filled their faces with shock and awe, Noll smirked and said, "That's right. Reynard used the power of suggestion (hypnosis) to find out who could be influenced the most. Father Carmyne, you were the first in Reynard's attempt at influence with the murder of your wife Maple Carmyne, and later with the deaths of your daughter Alice Carmyne and your assistant Timothy Ambrose. Next was Evan Moore, leading to his death of exhaustion and acute depression from writing all those messages. Mr. Meiler, you had multiple encounters with Reynard throughout your life, starting with your first encounter with your original partner Thomas Matheson, then the deaths of your second partner Tony Levine and you wife Callie Meiler. Then Lean Gordon, with the unwitting help of Somina Gavvers, succumbed to Reynard's influence next. Then Penelope Fowler from the Allenshire House for the Insane, who proves to be the most susceptible to Reynard's influence, resulting in complete mind control in her case. Reynard even tried to influence me with the death of my brother Gene and my subsequent encounter with him at the same insane asylum. In all these cases since the loss of his death ledger, Reynard uses a variety of methods to influence his victims. In that same vein, Reynard used similar methods to invade Ms. Gavvars dreams last night."
At this, Madoka said, adding her links to the chain, "If we go on that reasoning, then Arnold Coltraine's case fits what you're saying to the letter, but it's taken much further. His medical report showed many variances in his mental health, so he must have been mind-controlled or influenced when he escaped from the Psychiatric Institute of Washington in 1974. And on top of that, in 1949 Arnold Coltraine's distant uncle, Robert Coltraine, showed similar symptoms of Reynard's influence during much of his possession case."
"And years after the Robert Coltraine case," Lin continued, adding yet another link in the chain, "the Archbishop Joseph Ritter showed signs of a mental breakdown and severe depression in his medical examination in 1965, just two years before he died in 1967, which corresponds to the time when he gave the death ledger to Evan Moore during his internship in St. Louis, Missouri. Ritter's autopsy report showed he had overdosed on medications to combat the symptoms of acute depression."
"And," Father Carmyne added, completing the chain, "Father William S. Bowdern's account of Robert Coltraine's possession case matched exactly what I witnessed during my own attempts with Penelope Fowler's case. On top of that, Father Bowdern died under similar circumstances soon after I interviewed him in 1983, along with Father Raymond Bishop in 1978, Father Edward Hughes in 1980, Father Luther Schulze in 1995 and Father Walter Halloran in 2005; all of them died under Reynard's influence, it seems. And if we are to accept that Reynard used his current methods of influence during Robert Coltraine's exorcism, then we must also accept that he lost his first method of influence (his death ledger) during or soon after the exorcism. Father Bowdern himself said he obtained the death ledger after the exorcism and gave it to Joseph Ritter."
Noll then said, "So if we take up all the names of the victims in chronological order, both the living and the dead, then we have a viable path Reynard Malders must have taken to obtain the death ledger after he lost it in 1949. The deaths include Archbishop Ritter in 1964, Arnold Coltraine in 1974, Maple Carmyne during the 1977 Spitalfields case, Father Bishop in 1978, Tony Levine, Evan Moore and Callie Meiler during the 1979 William Street case, Father Hughes in 1980, Father Bowdern in 1983, Father Schulze in 1995, Father Halloran in 2005, Lean Gordon in 2007, Father Ambrose and Gene Davis in 2009 and Alice Carmyne in 2010 during this case.
"The living victims under Reynard's direct influence include Robert Coltraine (still living under an assumed identity), Jacob Meiler, Father Carmyne, Arnold Coltraine (who is still at large), Penelope Fowler, Somina Gavvers... And myself. And given that we're all intimately connected to this case, all of us are under Reynard's influence to some degree, as we have seen or experienced or were affected by his actions. As such, none of us can provide a reliable control for the experiment... With one exception." Noll turned to look at the only foreigner in the the room, the only person yet to provide a link to the hideous chain.
Mai just stood there, barely able to compute the thoughts running through her head, thoughts of being singled out, thoughts of becoming a possible target for this incomprehensible entity named Reynard Malders. "N-n-naru, what are you saying?" she said in Japanese.
"You're a part of this investigation," Noll said, getting up and walking toward her, "so I expect you to pull your own weight. As such, we need you to witness Gene's death from a different perspective. I have some idea of how Reynard did it, but I won't know for sure until you prove or disprove my thoughts."
At this, Mai opened her mouth to speak but couldn't; the sheer enormity of the request, as well as the dangers on getting directly involved, had just hit with like a ton of bricks. Her hands trembled at the prospect of meeting the infamous Reynard Malders, and tears bedewed her cheeks at the number of lives this evil man had touched.
"Noll, you're crazy!" Madoka said, getting up from her chair to comfort her young colleague.
Instinctively, Leulla walked over to comfort Mai, rubbing her back, while Martin confronted Noll on the spot. He said, a little too gruffly, "That's out of the question! After everything that's happened, after reviewing all the case files and resulting deaths this monster has laid waste over the years, do you honestly think I'd let you do that?"
The kid didn't say anything for several moments, going over the umpteenth time in his head if there was any other way to tackle this case. When he came up blank, he sighed and said, "Do you think I would resort to that if I had any other options? So far, we've connected and accounted for every link in the chain of evidence within our purview and can't go any further, unless we contact this S.P.K. investigation with out findings, or apprehend Arnold Coltraine, or have Mai go through with this experiment."
"So we're at a crossroads?" Lin said.
"Yes."
"There's one more link we haven't cleared up, Noll," Madoka said, carrying the package that the mysterious Giovanni handed to Somina, then looked at Luella and Martin. "This package was addressed to both of you, and its sender is named 'R. Ruvie'. I've heard of that name from somewhere, but I don't know where. Do either of you know who he is?"
Luella and Martin paled at the mention of R. Ruvie (*), a name from the past come back from the dead to haunt their weary minds once again. Both fell silent for a spell, both wavering on the cusp of telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth (so help them, God), or keeping that part of the past buried forever where the ghost of it couldn't reach them anymore. It didn't need to reach them. It had reached out through ten long years and touched Gene in 2009, and now threatened to touch Noll a year later, as well.
The words from the Gospel of Luke filtered through their minds, and Martin quoted the passage, "'For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad (**).'" He turned to his wife for guidance, at a loss for without her presence.
His wife looked at her husband and left Mai's side, saying, "It can't be helped. They need to know."
"Are you sure?" he said, still wavering, still not able to come to grips with this latest foible. "Do they really need to know all of it?"
Luella said nothing, just nodded her head as she wiped tears from her eyes and sat down on the chair next the the table. "Noll deserves the truth, Martin. All of it."
Martin looked at his wife, then looked at everyone in succession (Jake and Bert, Carmyne and Somina Gavvers, and Mai) except for Noll, keeping his eyes averted. It took him some minutes for him to look Noll in the face and got a hard stare at his stepson; eventually, he said, "It's hard for me to say this, Noll. "
(To be continued...)
A/N 1 (February 2016): Crap, I shouldn't have pressed PUBLISH... I'm about halfway through this chapter, and I seem to be halfway through this arc... Anyway, I'll add more to this when I have time... It's just that life is REALLY getting in the way of my writing, but I'll continue this story...
A/N 2 (July 2018): It's been over two years, and I've been writing original stuff for while now. But I guess it's time to return to crazy fanfic that got me writing in the first place: this one. I have a fair idea of most of this book, except the most recent chapters, so I'll need to read them before continuing this.

[NOTES]
Plot: After Noll sees the footage on the computer screen, he asks who the 'Giovanni' guy works for. They say, the 'Kira' case, which affects Noll greatly. When Noll confronts Luella and Martin about the 'Special Provision for Kira' soon after they come in with the rest in tow, Luella and Martin are distraught. Luella and Martin are forced to explain the circumstances of the late-night phone calls and arguments they had with each other, that they fought for the custody of Noll and Gene against Quillsh Wammy and Roger Ruvie of Wammy's House. This distresses Jacob Meiler, who is also forced to explain his own role in the affair, that he co-founded Wammy's House with Quillsh Wammy after WWII when they were young men and sided with the Davises for the custody of Noll and Gene. Jacob admits that he and Quillsh Wammy (along with Roger Ruvie) changed objective of the orphanage after the failed investigations of the Spitalfields (1977) and William Street (1979) cases, which lead to the grooming of L Lawliet into a world-famous master detective. He says that the original goal of Wammy's House was to find/produce a detective to investigate the still unknown murders of Reynard Malders, and that L's first case was to investigate those murders (it was L's only failed investigation). After L's and Quillsh Wammy's deaths in Japan, he then admits that he knew Roger Ruvie wanted both boys (Noll and Gene) to go to Japan to investigate the very case that killed L as an independent tangent investigation to the SPK and the original Kira investigation, thinking the killer ("Kira") was the same as the one that committed Raynard Malder's crimes; but he says that Gene asked Roger Ruvie not to allow Noll to take the case and that he (Gene) should take it in secret without Noll knowing, so that any consequences will not reach Noll. This explains why Gene went to Japan alone on a so-called exorcism, when he was really investigating a L's murderer. Everyone is shocked at this, and Martin nearly comes to blows with Jacob. Lin restrains Martin. Jacob explains that he had no idea what Roger Ruvie had planned for the boys, until Ruvie heard about Noll's and Lin's sudden departure to find Gene who had gone "missing" in Japan in the papers. Roger tells Jacob the whole thing, and that it was up to Jacob to tell them or not. Jacob has since been in a dilemma whether he should tell Martin and Luella about it or not during the Whitechapel Case, explaining why Jacob has been so haggard lately. Feeling betrayed, Luella and Martin asks Jacob to leave the investigation. But before he leaves, Noll realizes Reynard's intentions and tries to catch up with Jacob (forcing Lin to go after him, too). When Noll and Lin catch up, Noll says that Reynard Malders said it was Noll's fate to die in Japan, not Gene's. Noll says that if he and Gene went to Japan together, Gene would come back alive but not Noll, because Noll had befriended Lean Gordon. He says that Reynard made a mistake and is actively LOOKING for a reason to correct it by splitting up the investigation and conquering it. With that in mind, Noll, Lin and Jacob head back to the library but are confronted by Stephen Giovanni with a note from the 3rd L (Near) informing them that he (Near) had already interviewed Benny Fashanu and that Alexander Gargery and Kent Morrison were found dead in their homes.
Summary: Madoka shares her findings about Robert Coltraine's younger cousin, Arnold Coltraine, which still has her puzzled since it was brought to her anonymously by an unknown person (Stephen Gevanni from Death Note), as well as her doubts/feelings about Noll's implication of Somina Gavvers.
Charactes: Mai Taniyama, Noll Davis, Luella Davis, Martin Davis, Bert Grendel, Jacob Meiler / Koujo Lin, Madoka Mori, Father Carmyne, Somina Gavvers.
Quillsh Wammy (Watari/W) died at 70
Somina was stalked by Gevanni. Somina didn't even find out she was stalked until a few of the library patrons told her about it. Somina didn't even know what this Gevanni looked like, till he personally gave her the envelope with the tape in it, addressed to Martin and Luella. Now she's kinda scared. Gevanni was also the one who followed Luella Davis to her car for a short distance, and thus Luella mistook him for the stalker murdering all these women.
The SPK know about Somina Gavvers, because one of the members of Jacob Meiler's team is giving information to the SPK—Terry Haller. Through Haller, the SPK knew about Benny Fashanu, Alexander Gargery, and Kent Morrison and already interviewed them; they couldn't interview Penelope Fowler because of her condition, and they didn't interview Somina Gavvers yet until Noll's time to interview her in the night.
As Madoka talk to Lin going down to the lobby, she shows him an envelope to be opened 'For the recipient, Koujo Lin or Oliver Davis'. She tells him that Somina Gavvers gave it to her on her way to the 5th floor of the library; she says that Gavvers told her that an anonymous someone gave it to Gavvers, so that the letter gets to its recipient. When Lin and Madoka talk to Gavvers about this, Lin questions her on what that letter carrier looks like. When Lin opens the letter the reads the contents, he gets worried. Letter says that Lin and Noll are requested for an interview, signed by the letter "L".
Connects with Martin and Luella's adoption of Gene and Noll Davis, in which the Wammy House contested their adoption. Since then, the Wammy House, SPK, and Near have kept tabs on them.
