Chapter Three
A wave of students flocked the school grounds. The school building which was huge and made from red brick was divided into two different schools; elementary and high school. I walked Rudy to her classroom. She'd already made a friend (which proved my point) and was now giggling and chatting away. Camrin was going to come with me, but while we were walking, one of his friends caught his attention causing him to go into full convo mode in less than three seconds.
Now that I had dropped Rudy off, I quickly went off to find my first class. I'm sorry did I say find? I meant begin the journey of lossness. Three times so far I entered the wrong classroom and received deadly stares from teachers and students alike. One time I entered a store room. I was at the brink of giving up when something large and dark caught my eye. At first, I thought it was a dog that had somehow managed to sneak inside, but the loud grunting and scratching sound made me think twice. Before I had time to decide what to do, the grunting stopped and I was suddenly face to face with... something.
It looked like a man, a big, brawny one with a heap of dark, unruly hair growing from its head. His face was misshapen like he'd been dropped down twenty flights of steps. I could see the veins pulsing under his skin as they ran across his body like wires. He was hunched like if a heavy weight had been placed on his back for a decade and his eyes were small and dark like a rat's which hungrily took in their surrounds in one large sweep. That's when he saw me and gave a loud grunt. He walked forward slowly and I retreated at the same pace. Soon, I was backed into a wall with no way to turn. He thrust his hand forward and a large, wooden club appeared like it had been formed from the air around him. He was less than two feet in front of me and I'd like to tell you he looked better up close but that would be a blunt lie. As he lifted his arms, a scent like fifty dead cows hit me square in the nose. He'd definitely never heard of deodorant. He smiled at me, a gruesome one with his over sized yellow stained teeth and.. wait was that pieces of meat stuck between them?!
I'd like to tell you I was brave and looked him dead in the eye all mucho and stuff, but that would also be a lie. I was petrified to the spot as his huge figure loomed over me (the smell was unbearable). I watched as his club started coming down towards me. I knew that I would either be dead, knocked unconscious or flattened like a pancake if I received the slightest hit. In a meager attempt to protect myself, I lifted my arms over my head. A second later he struck. The impact made my knees buckle, but I was still standing. Perhaps I exaggerated the dying part...? I was sure that the weight of the club would end me. I opened my eyes and peaked out from behind my arms. Some type of shield was wedged between me and ugly's human squasher. It was golden and my mouth fell open as I realized where it came from. The creature seemed just as shocked as me. Quickly I stood up, knocking him back a bit. I slide between his legs and blasted down the corridor. The shield dissipated and I was left defenseless. The red gem on the bracelet was still blinking only quicker now.
"Come on, come on. There's got to be some type of weapon in this thing. You gave me a shield, now give me some type offense" I begged, tapping on each gem.
"She at least could of shown me how to use it.. just leaving me like that.." I grumbled under my breath.
Suddenly, I was engulfed in pink light. When it faded, my clothes were gone. In it's place was a white sweater with a white, textured vest underneath which was tucked into a matching, over the knee balloon skirt. A mask covered my eyes and upper face. In my hand was a large, red and black sledgehammer. It's handle was designed with intricate lines and writing that I of course had no time to read.
I was once again backed into a corner.
"Well I did ask for offense" I muttered.
I turned around and faced ugly who had been right on my tail. He swung his club at me which I dodged somehow. For some reason, I felt wide awake like I just drank two mugs of espresso. I could see the areas where the monster's body tensed with premeditated attacks. His moves seemed to slow down before me. I side stepped and moved into his next move narrowly escaping his club. Now close to his stomach, I whirled the hammer around and slammed him in the abdomen. His club fell from his hand and skidded across the floor. He gave me another loud grunt. Now he was mad. Quick like lightening he swiped at me - a move I wasn't expecting. I headed straight into the wall. The blow dazed me and I dropped my hammer.
"Wow that hurt" I mumbled to myself. Looking up, I had just enough time to dive out of the way. The monster's club crashed into the wall which I'm sure would definitely alert someone. Reaching for my hammer, I blocked his next hit and rolled behind him. Before he had time to react, I slammed him in the head - hard. His body stiffened and his club clattered out of his hand. For a second nothing happened and I was about to hit him again when his body began disintegrating into a blue dust that littered the floor. Soon he was no more and the blue dust melted away.
I dropped to my knees exhausted as the adrenaline wore off.
"What.. just.. happened?" I questioned myself. My brain was trying to find a logical answer. I know, it seemed to say, you imagined this. But then my eyes landed on the hole in the wall where the monster's club had intersected with it. There's no way I made this up.
I looked down at myself and realized I was wearing my old clothes again. My hammer was also gone. Gingerly I rose to my feet.
The sound of footsteps raised alarm bells in my brain. Hide! it shouted. I dashed into the nearest room which thankfully was a storage closet.
"What the heck?!" The voice commented. "Destructive little hooligans. If I ever find that little rascal..." it mumbled. The sound of footsteps started again and soon faded. I rushed out of the closet and back traced to my backpack which I dropped earlier. I looked at the time. 8:36am. My first class started at 8 and I still had no idea where it was.
After a few more wrong tries, I stumbled into Mr. Rowle's physics class. Everyone stared at me like I was crazy.
"Ah, so you came for the amen* I see" Mr. Rowle grumbled. The class giggled.
"Sorry sir. I uh.. got lost a few times. I'm new here" I apologized.
"Ahh what's your name?"
"Niya Mason sir"
He checked his roster for my name.
"Well your name's here. Unfortunately, I can't ask you to sit since we're already out of time."
"Class dismissed," he called to the rest of the class. He nodded at me and stood up from his desk.
"I hope your lateness doesn't become a habit young lady,"
"No sir it won't," I replied before turning to walk away.
"And young lady," Mr. Rowle called, "jewelry is not allowed in my classroom so I'd advise I never see it again... or else,"
"Yes sir,"
He walked passed me along with the rest of the class who were still giggling. The last person to leave was a blonde haired girl.
"I totally needed a laugh all morning," she said. "You're definitely on his 'It list'.
"What's that?" I asked
"Mr. Rowle likes to make a list at the beginning of the school year of all those he believes will either make trouble or fail his class. You're definitely going under fail," she chuckled again. I tried not to feel embarrassed.
"I'm Kaylie," she held out her hand for me to shake, "I already know your name of course," she giggled again. I couldn't help, but smile. Her laugh was pretty cute.
"Tell me that your next class is Spanish,"
I nodded a yes.
"Sweet. Hope you're good at it cause I suck." She grabbled her backpack and lead the way.

**P.S: The use of the slang "You come for amen" is quite popular in the Caribbean especially in Grenada. It simply means that you arrived when something is about to end. Thus 'you come for amen' which is usually the last thing you say in a prayer (the end) : ) **
