Chapter Seven

I could fly.

The bracelet lead me across town. Without warning I had transformed into the white outfit, however, mechanical wings were strapped to my back. They were white and although I couldn't touch them, they looked velvety soft like they'd been made from fine feathers. As my feet touched the ground, I felt the weight lift off my shoulder as the wings disappeared. The whole street looked deserted, but the bracelet was going haywire when I turned in the direction of a small café. I shrugged and entered a little nervously.

I must look like a fool.

Inside was empty. The whole place looked deserted which was really creepy.

.................................................................

The old man was crouching behind the counter armed with a rolling pin, and as I leaned over to touch him, I almost got whacked in the head.

"Sir, you need to leave right now. "

"What, is this a halloween party? Kid get out of here can't you see I'm being attacked by ghosts."

Ghosts? I almost laughed, but then humans can't see what I can.

"I'm here to help you, please just-"

"Listen up girly, this isn't a place for you to be. Now run along back to- ahhhhhhh!!!!" he screamed pointing.

I looked up in time to see a table heading straight for us. Quickly I held up my wrist and whispered, "shield." For a scary moment, I thought nothing would happen and then at the last minute, a shield sprouted from the bracelet taking the blow from the table which clattered to the floor. I turned back to the man.

"Now will you leave?"

"Y-y-yes m-mam," he stammered. He looked so shaken up that I thought he would wet himself. He staggered outside while I turned towards the creatures who had surrounded me, and were moving in slowly with their clubs swinging. I slid my fingers over the green gem, and the holographic images of weapons came up. I didn't have time to browse, and picked the first thing my eyes landed on. As it materialized in my hands, I realized that it was a whip. The tip of it was glowing red while the handle was covered in smooth precious stones. Seeing it, the monsters stopped advancing, and looked at each other wearily, like if they were waiting for one of them to make the first move. I wouldn't blame them. The whip itself looked pretty intimidating. I flipped it in an effort to scare them off, and accidentally managed to hit two of them. Their faces were covered in shock and their cries of anguish filled the room as they became dust. The other four tried to come at me together, and I did a sort of pirouette knocking them back with the whip.

"Well at least those ballet classes mom made me take actually paid off," I mumbled.

I drop out at age twelve (even though I was really good, and loved it) without giving my mother an explanation. Some things are better left unknown.

I swiped at the bracelet again, and decided to get the hammer to finish these goons off. As it materialized, I saw one of them reach of his club. He came at me swinging, and a only managed to step back fast enough to avoid being hit. In one quick motion, I lifted up the hammer and our weapons intersected. He was pushing down on me and I could feel my knees shaking as my muscles strained under his weight. I kicked at his knee and he fumbled long enough for me to slip behind, and end him. That's when I felt the weight of a car drop on me and everything went dark. One of them had landed on top of me and I almost past out from the smell.

He'll crush me I panicked. I could feel myself hyperventilating as I realized that I couldn't move him off of me. I could hear the others laughing in that high pitched cackle probably celebrating my defeat. I can't believe this is how I'll go out. I always thought that I would die of natural causes not because I was made a bed for someone or something else. In the darkness I could see the blue gem pulsing quickly as it glowed brighter and brighter until it was the only thing I could see. The light had temporary distracted me from my present problem. Suddenly, the creature wasn't on top of me anymore, and the laughing of the others was cut short. I looked around me. The whole room was blue like if a bucket of paint had exploded. Luckily it wasn't paint just the light from the gem which was fading.

As I turned to leave I could see that a small crowd had formed. The owner was outside waving his arms in the air wildly, and pointing at me. I nodded at him and took off. The wind lightly stung my cheeks, and eyes and my hair was glued down to my scalp. I loved it. Flying was exactly what I imagined it to be and more. The cold air rushed across my skin, and into my lungs as I inhaled it like perfume.

I landed near the back of the school and changed back. School was due to end in five minutes so I decided to wait under the tree for Camrin. I had missed my last two classes for the day, and although I wasn't too fazed by that fact, a small part of me was a little worried about what my mother would say if she found out. She has a tendency to... overreact. Once when I was seven I fell off my bike and bruised my knee. I didn't even cry, and wanted to continue riding, but my mother freaked like if my whole knee had fallen off. She called my father and of course exaggerated the whole thing, who in turn flew in that weekend to see me. He wasn't too happy to see what the big fuss was about especially since it was all for nothing. The only good thing that came from it was that I got a large teddy bear (that I still own) from my dad who brought it because he thought that it would cheer me up. If she found out that I was missing classes... I don't even what to think about it.

It was now two thirty two and Camrin wasn't here yet. I kind of have a thing with time which is ironic since I'm usually always late, plus I was anxious to meet Camrin again. What was he about to say earlier today? I questioned myself continuously. Then I saw him. He was talking and laughing with a few guys, his hands moving as he spoke. The other guys motioned a good bye to him, and he scanned the lawn looking for someone. When he saw me, he burst into his to-die-for smile and jogged over. My stomach was doing somersaults, and my heart was racing like a horse.

"Hey," he said when he reached me, panting lightly.

"Hey," I replied, switching the weight of my backpack to the other shoulder.

"Ready to go?"

"Yeah sure." We walked side by side down the lawn, and unto the sidewalk where we started heading down the street.

" How was class?" he asked. I was gazing at Kaylie who had spotted us walking together, and was grinning like an idiot as she got ready to board the bus home. I was trying really hard to hold a straight face as I replied, but he saw me and started smiling too.

"What's so funny?"

I didn't want him to see Kaylie so I turned to look at him which was a big mistake. I dived into his blue eyes and he gazed back.

"Nothing. Class was uh great." I replied. Liar ! my brain screamed. We walked a bit in silence after that.

"I'm sorry about Mackenzie. She can be a real pain sometimes. She's an even bigger pain now that we're over," he stated, "I don't get how people can be so unfair. They want to do whatever and expect everyone to just flow with it."

"Selfishness isn't always known by the person expressing it. I guess to her you're still hers despite the fact that she-" I trailed off.

"Cheated." he finished, "It wasn't the first time though."

"Wasn't the first time she cheated?" I asked, "And you took her back?" He nodded. "You must think I'm stupid huh? But it's something I don't expect you to understand Niya. You've never been in love."

"I'm sorry," he apologized, "I shouldn't have said that." He stopped to look at me, but I wouldn't meet his eyes which hurt me a little.

"I wasn't going to scold you for taking her back Camrin and I don't think you're stupid for doing it either. I can't tell you if I would have done the same thing since, as you said I've never been in a relationship. I've been in love it was just never reciprocated." I hated that I'd said that to him.

"I know that love makes you do things you would never do otherwise like forgive despite the pain," came my reply very softly.

He didn't respond, and we continued walking in silence. This is not what I anticipated this walk home would be I thought. We approached a bakery, and he stopped to buy something. I waited outside taking mental notes of all the vehicles I saw which I know is weird, but I loved cars especially Audi's which were my favorite. The whole of this street was lined with shops and business places. The door chimed and I turned around to find a cupcake in my face. It was topped with pink frosting and sprinkles. I looked up at Camrin.

"So you're trying to buy my forgiveness?" I asked with a slight smile.

"I'm really sorry for what I said back there. It was really mean and I wasn't thinking."
I took the cake and we began walking again as he took out another and began eating. I followed his lead and soon the cakes were all gone. He turned to ask me something and I spotted a bit of frosting on his cheek. I didn't hesitate to reach up and wipe it off. He froze.

"You're an animal," I laughed. He reached up and touched my fingers. I froze. His hands were warm and soft and part of me begged for us to stay like that, longing for him to take my hand. My heart was pounding so loud in my chest and my stomach was going haywire. For once my brain had nothing to say. I felt like we were staring at each other for hours, but then he dropped his hands.
We started walking again. As we neared the cross walk, guess who drove by in her Porsche? I could feel her glaring eyes from behind the rolled up window. I turned to Camrin and we both burst out laughing.

"You'll get me in trouble with Mackenzie Camrin," I commented still giggling.

"I don't care Niya. She isn't important to me anymore," he replied seriously.

We walked along talking about everything. We had so much in common and laughing with him just felt natural. We were now near a large oak tree and I could see my house from where we stood.

"That's my house," I said pointing.

"I live up that there" he said pointing to a small hill."Guess this is where we part ways," he said. My stomach dropped. I didn't want him to leave.

"If you want I can meet you at your house in the morning-"

"Yes I would like that very much," I blurted out. Way to go Niya now he'll think you're desperate.

He smiled at my enthusiasm and said, "alright then I'll see tomorrow at 7:45a.m."

He waved at me and started his walk home. I turned and made my way down the street. My mind and heart still buzzing.
