Chapter Five
I slipped into a seat in the fifth row. My teacher, Ms. Browne wasn't here yet and I sighed with relief. The class was rowdy and loud like a kindergarten, and I was sure that a teacher would walk in on us any minute now to scold. The door opened and a hush fell over the room as everyone shifted into an attitude of pretense. Those who'd been talking non-stop were now quiet as lambs, and the football that had been soaring back, and forth across the room had now magically disappeared. All eyes were glued to the front of the classroom where everyone expected to find a teacher, but instead standing there was Camrin with his earphones in his ears. He scanned the room and nodded as his blue eyes landed on me. Making his way over, he slid into a seat behind me.
"How's your day going so far?" I heard his voice near my ear. I turned to face him.
"Well, I managed to piss Mr. Rowle off on the first day so that's a good start," I joked.
"Wait, how'd you do that? You look like you should be a wiz in physics." Although he was smiling, his expression was guarded like he was annoyed at something.
"I may of walked in a minute before class ended," I replied meekly.
His eyes widened. "New girl is a rebel I see. Did you get so lost that you couldn't find the classroom or did you just want to skip class?"
"I got really lost," I lied, " I took so many wrong turns."
He laughed.
"Oh man, you're lucky it's the first day. What did Rowle say?"
"You should of seen him. The guy was acting like I set fire to his car or something. He was like, You come for the amen Miss Mason? " I said mimicking Mr. Rowle.
" I don't even know what that means. I even told him that I was new, and he still acted like I stole his beloved pet cat, shaved its fur and tattooed it. "
Wow Niya really? Tattooed his cat? Real clever , I scolded myself.
Camrin gave me a weird look, and laughed. I could see his dimples. Kaylie was right, they were deep and made him look really, really cute. He caught me staring and waved his hand in my face.
"Earth to Niya,"
"Oh sorry." I blushed and looked away quickly. He smiled again, but then the door opened and his face dropped back into it's reserved mode.
"Oh brother," he mumbled closing his eyes.
"What?" I asked alarmed. Then I heard it. A high pitched voice from the front of the room.
"Mackenzie," he grumbled before easing back in his seat and pushing his earphones back in his ears.
"Hey Cami,"
I turned to the speaker and gasped. Mackenzie.. was.. stunning and that was still an understatement. Her red hair fell in loose ringlets past her shoulders, and was topped with a black fedora that matched her outfit: tight, bleached, blue knee-cut jeans, white sleeveless blouse tucked into them with a dark designer jacket hanging around her shoulders (which I didn't see the purpose of since it was scorching hot outside, but Mackenzie still made it look good). On her feet she wore black slip-ons and an anklet with a butterfly on it. Her face was round with high cheek bones, full lips that were covered in matte red lipstick and dark eyes that stood out against her lightly tanned skin. She smiled, revealing her pearly whites. Suddenly I could see how she and Camrin had made a good couple. They were both stunning. Their looks belonged together.
She crossed the room to where Camrin sat followed by her entourage of friends, or more accurately followers. They all had curled hair and perfectly made up faces with fedoras. She turned to me, eyeing me like a pimple, and then flashed me a big smile. It was fake though. I could tell.
"Hi, can you please move so I can sit by my Cami," she cooed. I blinked at her like I couldn't believe what she was saying. Was she talking to me? my brain asked.
"Excuse me?" I heard myself say.
"I said I would like to sit here so can you find another seat?" she was still smiling, but her face was tense.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not moving. There are other seats." I replied. Her face wasn't smiling anymore. A mummer ran through her group of followers and they looked at me with pleading eyes as if to warn me. I didn't care though. I've dealt with girls like Mackenzie before. She's the type that believes that the world revolves around her very being.
She held up her palm to them, and the murmuring stopped. She flipped her hair, and regained her composure.
"Look.. what's your name?" she asked.
"Niya,"
"Look Niya, I don't recognize your face which means you're new which means that you don't know how things run around here. I'll give you a second chance since you look like a smart girl, and I'm very forgiving," she spat eyeing me with even more disgust, "Do the sensible thing and give me your seat. I need to talk to Camrin."
"And I said no. There are other seats next to Camrin sit there. Why do you want to sit here so badly? Look Mackenzie I'm not moving and that's that." I declared crossing my arms and staring her in the eyes. I hadn't noticed how loud I had spoken until I realized that the whole classroom was quiet, and staring at us. My face got red, and I looked away. Someone let out a loud "Oooh," and some people began snickering.
When I looked at Mackenzie again she was glowering, and her face didn't look as pretty as before.
"Fine then," she replied coldly, and in one swift movement grabbed my backpack, and threw it across the room.
"Girl you're black. Who are you to talk to me like that?! My ancestors owned your kind," she said coming up closer to my face. I could feel the anger climbing to my head as I recalled the many fights I'd gotten into with people who thought that I was below them because of my race. I was sick of it. I rose from my seat and the classroom became heated with excitement. I stared her in the eyes again. They were so dark I could see my reflection.
"I don't care who you think you are Mackenzie none of that matters to me. You're just a spoilt brat who can't take a hint," I nodded in Camrin's direction who had removed his earphones, and was staring at us.
"I've only been here some hours, and I already know that you can't keep your eyes or lips on one guy. You can't even take a clue when you get one. He's just not into you, get it?" I was taken back by my own words. The classroom erupted in cheers and sniggers. I turned to collect my backpack off the floor.
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!!!!" Mackenzie screamed like she was about to go off the edge. She pushed a guy who was holding a camera in her face out of the way. The crowd quieted down. She turned to me, fists clenched.
"You'll regret this Niya. You better apologize to me right now before -"
"Before what Mackenzie?" Camrin called from behind her. He stood up with his backpack and walked towards her, "before what huh? Why do you always have to make people's lives a living hell?"
"Cami babe-"
"Don't," he cut in." I've told you hundreds of times before WE ARE DONE. I don't know what ideas you have in your head, but you and I are never going to be a thing again, capeesh?" He didn't wait for an answer. He walked towards me, took my bag and pulled me out of the classroom which went wild. Talk about massive sting.
