I had an idea forming in my head but I wasn't entirely sure it would work. I walked Martha to the door and knocked. The man came to the door and opened it and my heart started beating out of my chest. Just by looking at him you could tell he was a very dangerous man.
"What is it?" he demanded.
"I've lost my way and I wondered if you would let me come in and rest for a while."
He grunted. "I suppose. But only for a short while." He glared at Martha but said nothing when she came in.
His tone was harsh, but I pretended not to notice. "Thank you!"
I sat down in the living room and the toxic stench of cigarettes and alcohol burned my nostrils.
"I have something to do, but I'll be right back to give you directions to wherever you're going. then you can be on your way." I was sure he went to tell Linda not to make any noise. I didn't waste any time; I got up and ran to his bedroom and found the key to the back door and slipped it in my pocket. I ran back to the mouldy-looking, three-person couch and sat down in the same spot where I had been when he left. He came back and crossed his arms. "Where are you going?"
"Pardon me?" I stopped breathing. Did he see me??
"You said you were lost! Where are you going?"
"Oh," I could breathe again. "I was looking for the... Mc...Gregors..." I really hadn't thought this through enough.
"Never heard of them. Ask someone else. On your way!"
"Okay, thanks for trying!" I hastily led Martha out the door, made sure he wasn't watching, and rushed back to the window.
"Did you get it?" She asked. She was awake again.
"I did. I can try to sneak you out tonight" She closed her eyes.
"Please..." She whispered, "Oh please don't let this be a dream..."
