The Whisperer

"Wylie! Run back to the house *hic* you pathetic boy! Ive run out if money and we still need to get *hic* more!"  Wylie's father yelled. Wylie lived at the farm house with his sister Adeline and his father. When he was a young boy everything was perfect! His father farmed and took care of the land, and he and his sister would play and joke and tell stories. But some how, now that he was older, Wylie's life had changed. The town had been attacked by monsters, and they did a good job destroying it before they retreated into the woods, where most of the monsters lived. His father started drinking at the town pub and the lang around their house had become dry and grassy. His little sister had seemed to be the only thing that remained the same. "But-" Wylie began. "No buts you idiot boy! Now get your lazy a** up to the house!" his father shouted. Not wanting to anger his father, Wylie tuned and made his way to the house.

He arrived at the farm house that he called home. He pushed open the oak wood doors and stepped inside, shutting the doors behind him. The air in the house smelled sour and the interior was dusty and unkempt. Wylie sighed and walked to the kitchen where his father kept most of his money. He grabbed some, along with some bread and cheese for him and his sister. Before he left he ducked out the side door and made his way over to the run down old gardening shed. Its not like Wylie had a particular interest in going to the musty old shed but a few days ago he had discovered a creature in there! It was unlike any animal that he had ever seen, even if he had only seen its large white glowing eyes and the tips of his big ears peaking out of the shadows. Wylie tried his usual coaxing softy calling the creature out of its hiding place. "Hello, little one. Im not going to hurt you." The creature growled and hissed at him, as usual. "How come you don't trust me?" Wylie questioned. "Well, its not that I don't trust you, per say but I don't exactly appreciate you invading my new home!" responded the creature in a squeaky but irritated voice. Wylie jumped back in surprise. "You- you can talk!?" "Of course I can talk! Gee, you humans really do have brains the size of walnuts." retorted the creature. It had come out of the shadows now, and Wylie could see that it was completely black minus his large white eyes. It had large pointed ears and two stubby front legs with four clawed fingers. But the strangest thing about the creature was that it didn't seem to have any back legs, only wispy black smoke. "Your- your a smoke monster!" stuttered Wylie. "A smoke thiserus. Im no monster." explained the creature in annoyance.

Suddenly the creatures mood change and his eyes darted around. "Wylie, if you value your life I suggest you run." it said, nervously. "You know my name? And whats this about the value of my life?" asked Wylie, but the creature had already disappeared into the fog. Fog! The word cut into Wylie's brain bringing along with it the sudden realization. Sudden fog could only mean one thing. He began to run. it was the only thing he could do. He sped away from the shed as quickly as he could. He turned his head around only to see it. The thing that made grown men tremble in their boots. A name that a fox would be afraid to utter in the dark of midnight. Just thinking about it made Wylie run faster. He willed his legs to go faster and faster and faster. But then he heard a whoosh and he knew it was all over. The Whisperer was upon him. It grabbed his body in its misty tentacles and looked him right in the eyes with the cold piercing gaze that tore through Wylie's soul. But just at the cruel monster was about to strike, Wylie saw out of the corner of his eye a black swirl of smoke. The Whisperer, startled dropped Wylie. He hit the ground and it all went black.
