Chapter 9: Kat

Kat stumble over the dry, cracked earth of the Flats. The nearest outpost that wasn't a PeaceKeeper stronghold was Jasper City, at least eighty miles north of here. That was three days away. Kat was both glad and dismayed that there were no trees in sight. On the one hand, she would be able to see any Reavers long before they would be able to smell her, but on the other.....

Wait. Kat paused, listening.

There it was again. That noise, coming from somewhere..... Behind her! Kat whirled around, cursing herself for not watching her six. Five Reavers, twenty feet from where she was standing, and coming quickly. The Reavers' skin was dark gray and wrinkled in a strange way, as though in some places there was only barely enough skin to cover their bones, and in others, there were long folds hanging almost to the ground. Their hands resembled claws, the nails as long and sharp as their teeth. Reavers were amazingly fast, and they reached her almost before she was able to draw her knife.

The one on her far left reached for her, it's pointed claws trying to pierce her skin. Kat ducked and slashed her knife towards it, praying she would hit it. She did, a painfully shrill scream erupting from its throat as half of its arm fell to the ground. It ran off, and Kat focused her attention on the other four. Two had gotten in some good scratches while she had been busy with their companion, and she could feel the burning pain somewhere on her body, but there was no time to locate the wounds right now. If these four weren't dealt with soon, she'd be dead anyway. Two came at her from opposite sides, wary of the hand holding the knife, and the other two ran around her, trying to draw her attention long enough for the first pair to get close enough to kill her. Kat registered this in the space of a split second, adrenaline stimulating her senses. Of course, it made her wounds hurt more, but she ignored the pain and focused on reading their body language and calculating their next moves, as well as what she needed to do to bring them down.

There. The one on the right was leaning a touch more forward than it had been a second ago, pooling its weight on the balls of its feet.

It was about to spring towards her.

She waited for two-tenths of a second, and ducked low, stretching out her knife just in time to nick an artery in its leg, spilling its midnight blue blood onto the ground. The other one screamed as its dead compatriot fell onto it, pinning it to the ground. The final two stopped suddenly, and began to move towards her, their scarlet eyes glowing. Kat gulped.

Yeah, they were definitely mad.

She turned and ran, the two Reavers chasing after her. Kat knew full well that they could catch her easily if they wanted to, but they weren't. Oh, dear Heaven, they were playing with their food. A thought flitted through her head. Maybe I can use that. After all, they didn't know about her throwing knives.

One the Reavers sped up and dug his claws into her back. Kat screamed, the pain ripping through her senses. She stabbed backwards, desperate to stop the agony, her knife lodging in the Reaver's chest. It fell and didn't get up again. The last remaining Reaver swiped at her side, creating five gashes, each half an inch long. She blindly grabbed one of the throwing knives from her belt, threw it, and ran, not even looking to see if it had found its mark.

Kat ran for what felt like hours, blood dripping from her wounds, until finally collapsing face-first onto the ground. She blacked out before she could see the oncoming transport truck.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sooooo, my first fight scene! Did I do it right? Yes? No? Maybe? Koala?

My birthday happened recently. Funny, I don't feel any older than I did four years ago.

My cat is just as angry and murderous as always. Yesterday, when we finally came home from a trip, she greeted us with screaming to FEED ME!!! We had an automatic feeder set up, and she had a full bowl already!

When I went to bed, she curled up next to me and promptly destroyed my hand.

I think she claimed my bed while we were gone.

I'm thinking about revising Airwalkers a little. If you haven't read it, please do! And share any criticisms you have. I could use the honest opinions.
