Chapter 9 - You Smell Good

Lan Zhan's problems did not magically disappear like he hoped for, Instead when morning reached, before the sun rose, Lan Zhan home was rocked awake by the piercing vibration of Wei Ying's screams. The outcries sent trimmers echoing through the walls of the ancient house.

Ear pounding, blood boiling, Lan Zhan rushed upstairs. The werewolf only prayed Jiang Cheng hadn't heard Wei Ying's deafening screams all the way over from next door.

Goddammit, Wei Ying drives him crazy. "Wei Ying!?" Lan Zhan shouted, flinging the bedroom doorway open, "what happened?"

Apparently, Wei Ying had been awake for quite some time. It's a miracle Lan Zhan did not notice. With a look of despair on his face, and eyes bulging out, Wei Ying stumbled over to Lan Zhan. Tripping against the shattered clothes on the floor, "What the hell are these?" Wei Ying pointed to the painstakingly visible canines peeping their way out.

The look of panic and terror fueled Wei Ying's eyes, but Lan Zhan only exhaled in relief. The fever had passed, thank goodness, Wei Ying wasn't going to die. Lan Xichen was right all along. "What are you smiling about?" Wei Ying barked in full fury, snapping Lan Zhan out of his dream state trance.

Wei Ying could not believe it, he was losing his Goddamn mind, and Lan Zhan had the audacity to look smug, there was even a tiny glint of smile Wei Ying was sure coated across Lan Zhan's porcelain face. This was not a bright moment, why the hell was Lan Zhan happy?

When Wei Ying had awoken earlier, shock would be an understatement of what he had exhibited. A part of Wei Ying wanted to smack Lan Zhan across the head. The fangs were not the only thing Wei Ying had observed when waking up. The damn werewolf bond Lan Zhan kept bickering about seemed to have intensified even more. It struck at Wei Ying like a bolt of lightning beyond the chest. Now Wei Ying felt drawn toward Lan Zhan in more ways than one.

"Lan Zhaaan," Wei Ying whined, dragging Lan Zhan's name a little longer than needed, "they hurt." Wei Ying opened his mouth, showcasing the two baby canines. "Lan Zhan, make it stop."

Lan Zhan sighed.

Lan Xichen had told him newly turned werewolves would sometimes act like pups. Lan Zhan didn't expect to get a literal man-baby. Oh well, Lan Zhan would have to suck it up and grant whatever Wei Ying requested. Lan Zhan did not mind.

"Let me see," Lan Zhan ushered with his hand for Wei Ying to open his mouth. Wei Ying complied. Wei Ying being so close, Lan Zhan gulped, suddenly the room turned hot - stuffy. It's like Lan Zhan didn't have the will to fight as he dragged a finger over the barely sharp canines, making its way over Wei Ying's tongue, and sliding over Wei Ying's plumpy pink lips.

Wei Ying gasped and pulled away. "What are you doing?" Wei Ying whispered, his breath hot, fanning against Lan Zhan's face. Wei Ying still stood close to Lan Zhan - grounded, not wanting to move.

“You smell good,” Lan Zhan unknowingly blurted. “Like, really good.” Lan Zhan took a sniff at the air. Was beta supposed to smell this good around their alphas? Lan Zhan needed to ask his brother about that, so he tucked that piece of information away for later.

“What?” Wei Ying gave a nervous chuckle, averting his eyes elsewhere, and assumed the little flutter of his heartbeat didn't occur. “Lan Zhan, are you sure I’m the one going through changes, or you? You seem a bit off.”

"I" Lan Zhan cleared his throat, realizing what he just said. "I didn't mean to say that - sorry. I was checking if there is any infection forming inside your mouth," Lan Zhan lied, turning his back on Wei Ying but being unable to hide the redness of his ears and the throbbing ache in his underpants. "There's nothing wrong. It'll hurt for a few hours, don't worry, the pain will subdue in due time. How are you feeling?"

Wei Ying shrugged, contemplating how exactly he felt. "Fine, I guess," Wei Ying said, "better than yesterday. A lot better."

"Good," Lan Zhan sighed in relief, "In the meantime, come down for breakfast. And Wei Ying," Lan Zhan swung back around, glaring into Wei Ying's sterling eyes, "I'm glad you're going to be okay."

Wei Ying was left speechless, Lan Zhan sounded like he genuinely cared. And why the hell did Wei Ying mind if Lan Zhan cared?

Wei Ying watched on as Lan Zhan slightly staggered out of his room and down the stairs in absolute nervousness. Then a rolling crash came.

Wei Ying rushed out, and that's when he saw Lan Zhan at the very bottom of the stairs. Lan Zhan had tumbled down. Before Wei Ying could register on what to do, Lan Zhan was already up, dusting himself off. "Are you all right?" Wei Ying called from the top of the stairs, a glimmer of laughter hiding its way behind Wei Ying's lips.

Lan Zhan cleared his throat, "I'm fine," Lan Zhan said, "clean yourself up and come down when you're finished." And with that, Lan Zhan walked away as if nothing had happened.

"Well, that was awkward," Wei Ying shrugged at his shoulders, "maybe Lan Zhan has rabies."

----------

When evening emerged, Wei Ying surprisingly showed no signs of pain or discomfort. By then, they were certain Wei Ying would not die or face any long-lasting complications. The only thing that left an impact on Lan Zhan's mind is the forthcoming werewolf transformation Wei Ying would soon have to endure within the upcoming days. It could happen any time, anywhere, any day.

When Jiang Cheng heard of the news that Wei Ying was becoming a creature of the night and would have to face an unpleasant transformation, things didn't play out nicely. Jiang Cheng went home, packed a suitcase with his clothes, and demanded that he stay at Lan Zhan home until Wei Ying overcame all future obstacles.

Lan Zhan did not like the idea of sharing his house with Wei Ying's brother, but he had no say in it whatsoever.

So now here they were, dining together like one big happy family. Lan Zhan ate in peace, a habit of his, while the two brothers bicker on about Wei Ying's baby canines that Lan Zhan was positive would get big in due time.

" - tell him, Lan Zhan." Wei Ying spoke, snapping Lan Zhan out of his thoughts.

"Huh?" Lan Zhan was left confused. Tell him what? Tell who what?

Wei Ying tsked, "Tell Jiang Cheng my wolf fangs are cute."

Lan Zhan choked, and Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes.

The tip of Lan Zhan's nose became red. "Boring," Lan Zhan replied, taking a sip at the porcelain cup filled with milk.

"Hmph," Wei Ying screwed up his face. "Mean. Don't forget Lan Zhan, you're the one who gave them to me. You should at least compliment them." Lan Zhan's ears burned a right red. "By the way, how old are you? I've been so caught up with my own drama, I forgot to ask." Wei Ying asked, filling his mouth with grape juice.

"Two hundred and sixty-five," Lan Zhan replied blankly.

Wei Ying wheezed the contents of grape juice out of his mouth, spilling the lewd mixture all over the table and managing to splash some on Lan Zhan's white cotton turtle neck sweater. A choke soon followed.

"Told you he's an old man," Jiang Cheng said, patting Wei Ying on the back.

Lan Zhan wiped at his face, removing any and every droplet of grape juice, "I'm not that old Jiang Cheng."

"Enough," Wei Ying interrupted, "Lan Zhan, there's another thing I've been meaning to ask you. Before all this happened, I used to see you through your window, "Wei Ying chuckled. "Dressed in Hanfu clothing. Why Lan Zhan? Are you some time traveling werewolf also? Not that you don't look good, you look better than good. HAndsome even."

A look of excitement filtered Wei Ying's face, and Jiang Cheng only huffed in response.

Lan Zhan was hesitant. He did not want to say why he frequently wore Hanfu clothing, afraid that the two brothers would mock him. In the end, Lan Zhan gave in, for he could not lie to Wei Ying even if Jiang Cheng might be around. "I take part in cosplay conventions," Lan Zhan whispered out. Secretly hoping that both brothers didn't hear.

"You what?" Wei Ying blurted.

Lan Zhan groaned, ignoring the stifled laugh from Jiang Cheng. "I take part in cosplay conventions," Lan Zhan gritted out.

And then the room erupted into a fit of laughter, turning Lan Zhan into a red tomato.

----------

When midnight reached, Lan Xichen had not returned. Lan Zhan got worried. Wanting to put his troubled mind at ease, Lan Zhan crept into Wei Ying's room where he spent the next half an hour gawking at Wei Ying's beauty. Lan Zhan did not know, but he realized he liked watching Wei Ying sleep. There's a sort of tranquillity around Wei Ying. A calmness, Lan Zhan wanted to suffocate himself in.

A knock on the front door was what snapped Lan Zhan out of his staring contest at the sleeping Wei Ying.

Turning his senses elsewhere, the sour scent of blood mixed with agony filled the air - Lan Xichen. Lan Zhan rushed to the door and quickly tugged it open. What Lan Zhan saw next made his heart burned.
