Chapter 25: Shadow Armies & The Prophecy of the Eleven Prides

Mae's POV

If you've never seen a battle field before, consider yourself lucky. I considered myself to have seen some pretty gruesome wars in my time with the Order, but nothing close to this. Dozens of werecats had lined up, their eyes black as coals. Their shadows seemed to be different from the actual cat figures.

Then there was June. Her raven fur was sleek and almost shiny in the moon light. Although her eyes were red, a color I'd only know in Dex. I glanced away nervously. I never wanted to look into red eyes ever again. Even if it meant never looking at my brother.

June's posture was strait and similar to the dictators of the past. Hitler, Napoleon, Ceaser. Bad guys they were but June looked just like them. I really wished Red was here to fight June. She was the only one who matched her strength.

The Shadow Wolf was here too. His form was almost transparent though. Like a ghost. I think Dillan mentioned something about him not being able to hurt us. Not a problem then.

We had less than 10 werecats, including me and Dex. Xander stood there a knife help in his shaky hand. Willow growled at her enemies, while Eliva tried to match her confidence. Eva was perched on the roof her snowy feathers like a star in the night. The members of the Order surveyed the werecats. It was most of Dex's Pride. This was definitely the final battle.

A clock struck midnight from inside and the world seemed to slow down. I was vaguely aware of the burning fear in my chest. But also the desire to make my Pride proud. I squeezed my eyes shut, willing it all to be a dream and then I heard Lana whisper in my ear.

You want a chance to prove yourself? Go on then. Just let me come in when you need it.

I snapped my eyes open and noticed the Shadow Cats had charged. Dex and June locked in battle, the two powerful cats circling each other. I saw my friends fighting not just for their lives but the lives of the entire world. This was our last chance to stop the Shadow Army.

Suddenly I was filled with a burning rage.

I let Lana take partial control and found myself claw to claw with another werecat. The cat nipped at my leg, wanting to make sure I gave in. Only it healed itself almost instantly. Angered by this, the cat pounced.

A fatal move. I let the cat carry my weight as it stumbled to it's paws I scratched it's hind leg. How long in pain the cat still continued it's attacks. I dodged each one and let the cat tire itself out. Finally I gave a hiss and chased the cat off into the trees.

It went on like this for a long while. Although even I had my limits. I was exhausted. I tried to use as little energy as possible but it still seemed so much. The Shadow Army was so big. We were fighting a pointless battle. And now even I, the most stubborn if people, knew it.

Dex's POV

Our jaws met. Our claws clashed. Hissing and spitting was exchanged between the two of us. Neither of us could get the advantage. My muscles strained at blocking blow after blow, and then returning a few of my own. That's when the blows stopped and the words came.

"You tire Dex." June said, in her insanely soft voice.

"You wish." I said, trying not to pant, like a filthy mutt. Suddenly the battle stopped around us. I didn't dare look to see the injuries. June's sources where regrouping.

"Why waist your life fighting an endless fight? You where chosen by the moon for something big, something special. The prophecy said it had to be you." With those muttered words, my blood ran cold.

"What prophecy do you speak of?" I hissed.

"Why don't you ask your master of visions. After all I squeezed it out of him." June said a smirk on her lips.

"Xander!" I hissed. The werecat boy understood cats when we spoke, but only on the full moon. I glared at him, "Tell me about what she says."

"I-I didn't mean to tell her Dex, but she forced me." He said, voice shaking.

"Just spit it out."

Then Xander stopped shaking. His voice changed. The same way it did back in the cell. His mouth didn't move but words still came from him. His eyes were squeezed tightly shut and a lone tear streaked down his face.

"I am the speaker of visions, loyal to only the moon and it's greatness. What do you wish me to tell you?"

"Tell me of the prophesy that June speaks of." I said, a bit angry. Why were things so complicated?

"When the snake swallows the sun

And the last hope has fallen;

A werecat of royal blood

And a werecat who has forgotten;

On the longest day of the sixteenth year

Of both werecat souls;

The sun and moon will be at his command

And the seasons for her taking;

The royal bloodline will be restored

Or crumble within their paws.

This is the Prophecy of the Eleven Prides, and it will continue to be until the end of time."

Xander's eyes snapped open again and the whole world seemed to be holding in a deep breath. There was a prophecy, about me. Or so June though. She must think I was the werecat who'd forgotten. Maybe it was how to live or something.

"You must join me Dex. Your Order friends will die more quickly and your sister and werecat friends can stay alive. You can stop all of this death by just joining me."

I looked at her, my rebellious gleam forever stuck in my eyes and said, "No."

June just raised her head slightly and smiled a mad smile. "Very well. But I'll keep you alive until you change your mind. Although," --This was when I noticed she was talking more to herself and less me-- "I can't hurt you. So maybe I'll have to hurt someone else!"

Before I could process the words, June slammed the closest person to me down. That just so happened to be Xander. I tried to jump on her, but two of the Shadow Army members tossed me aside, I landed with a thud, near Mae.

None of us could do anything except watch June tear Xander to shreds. She gave him wound after wound. Finally she threw him to the ground only a few feet from me. From the fury in June's eyes and the smirk on Xander's bloodied face, he had said something sarcastic.

Mae touched her nose to Xander's and I saw the love in my sister's eyes. She had fallen in love with him. I heard Xander whisper something I couldn't quite hear, then his body went limp and his eyes dulled to a lifeless state. Xander was dead.

My heart twisted with grief and a single, silent tear fell off my cheek. Mae was sobbing though. Only her son's suddenly quieted. In her eyes was nothing other than pure anger. Mae was about to attack June but I pounced on her, making sure she didn't get up. I wasn't going to lose her too.

That's when a white pelt did what Mae wanted to. Another tabby one came rushing to my side. Red and Dillan were finally here.
