⠀⠀⠀𝒊𝒊𝒊. body in the woods
❛ I cannot sleep, I cannot dream tonight. I need somebody and always. ❜
SEASON 1, EPISODE 2
second chance at first line
IT SEEMED LIKE part of the Gallagher sister's school routine to sit at the lacrosse practices. Yet, Willow continued to feel a sense of deja vu when she sat in the bleachers. When Willow and Stiles were dating, she used to go to every practice, every game in support. Now, all she felt was annoyance that she had to be out in the sun and watch them waste two hours out of her day.
⠀⠀⠀"My-My grandmother can move faster than that," Coach screamed at Scott from across the field. "And she's dead! You think you can move faster than the lifeless corpse of my dead grandmother?"
⠀⠀⠀Scott responded, but no one in the stands could hear him. Although, the way Coach responded to the reply showed that he wasn't exactly pleased.
⠀⠀⠀"I can't hear you!"
⠀⠀⠀"Yes, Coach!" Scott yelled back.
⠀⠀⠀"Then do it again," Coach told him.
⠀⠀⠀Scott stood straight and started to jog back to the front of the line. Coach trailed behind him and chanted, "McCall's gonna do it again! McCall's gonna do it again!"
⠀⠀⠀Scott stood across from Jackson as the two glared at each other. Then, Scott ran forward like Coach had told him to and slammed his full weight against him. He threw Jackson into the air and forced him down hard onto his shoulder. The crowd could hear the sickening crack as Jackson started to flail on the field. The players all ran forward to check on Jackson while one went to Scott.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles and Scott started to run off the field while the rest of the team was distracted, and the sisters watched as they did. Then, finally, Bridgette and Laurel turned to Willow, and she sighed.
⠀⠀⠀"I guess it's my turn to check on him?" Willow asked.
⠀⠀⠀Her sisters nodded.
⠀⠀⠀Willow stood to her feet and followed after the two boys. She entered the boy's locker room and sprinted inside when she heard Scott screaming: "GET AWAY FROM ME!"
⠀⠀⠀Willow skidded across laminate floors and into the room. She watched as Scott breathed heavily as his canines started to sharpen and his eyes turned gold. She made her way to Stiles, grabbed the back of his shirt, and wrapped her arms around him.
⠀⠀⠀Her head laid between his shoulder blades, closed her eyes, and exclaimed, "Caelus, tuus virtus cum celamus et ab advorsari defendemus qui velo ad nocemus!"
⠀⠀⠀A blue light flickered around them as a shield formed around them. Willow took a step away from Stiles so that she wasn't hugging him from behind any longer. However, she kept her hand on his arm just in case the shield decided to abandon him when she let go.
⠀⠀⠀They watched as Scott jumped onto the top of the lockers and glared down at them. He didn't look like himself as he growled at them before jumping down and hitting the shield with a loud smack.
⠀⠀⠀"Is it safe?!" Stiles asked, looking from Scott to Willow then Scott again. "Are we safe?!"
⠀⠀⠀"I can't hold this for long," Willow admitted, already sounding strained. "I have to put too much energy into this."
⠀⠀⠀"Then what do we do?!" Stiles exclaimed.
⠀⠀⠀"We need to calm him down or, at least, knock him out!"
⠀⠀⠀Stiles nodded as he watched Scott stand again and jump at the force field. Willow grunted like she had been physically struck. Stiles looked around the room frantically for something, anything to save them.
⠀⠀⠀"Follow me," he told her.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles took her hand from his shoulder and dragged her toward the door of the locker room. Willow and the shield followed him as he beelined to the fire extinguisher. He reached out, but his hand was blocked by the shield as it rippled where his finger pressed against it.
⠀⠀⠀"I can't grab it!" he exclaimed.
⠀⠀⠀"I have to put it down," Willow explained, panting. "Once I do, you have to grab it!"
⠀⠀⠀Stiles nodded, "Okay! I can, I can do it! I'm ready!"
⠀⠀⠀Willow lowered her hand beside her, and the shield opened from the top. They were fully vulnerable to an attack. Stiles took the extinguisher as soon as he could, fumbling with it before he got a grip on it. He held it between his arms and pulled the pin out, angling the nozzle toward Scott and spraying him down.
⠀⠀⠀When Stiles ran out of spray, he didn't take a second to chance Scott trying to attack them again. Instead, he took Willow's hand and pulled her around the door to see what would happen next.
⠀⠀⠀"Stiles?" Scott called, his voice distraught and soft.
⠀⠀⠀The two teenagers peered around the corner to see him sitting on one of the benches, his head in his hands.
⠀⠀⠀"What happened?"
⠀⠀⠀Stiles tried to walk into the locker room but was held back by his hand still in Willow's. Their eyes darted to look at their hands, still attached. They both snapped them back at their sides and ignored the muscle memory stance.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles turned back to Scott and made his way inside, frowning at Scott.
⠀⠀⠀"You tried to kill us," he told Scott bluntly, taking a seat on the floor in front of Scott. "It's like I told you before. It's the anger. It's your pulse rising. It's a trigger."
⠀⠀⠀"But that's lacrosse," Scott protested, his face falling. "It's a pretty violent game if you hadn't noticed."
⠀⠀⠀"Well, it's gonna be a lot more violent if you end up killing someone on the field," Stiles concluded. "You can't play Saturday. You're gonna have to get out of the game."
⠀⠀⠀"I'm first line," Scott protested.
⠀⠀⠀"Not anymore."
"ARE YOU GOING to keep dragging us around now that Scott's a werewolf?" Willow asked.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles was driving towards Scott's house like a madman after he had picked her and Laurel up due to an 'emergency.'
⠀⠀⠀Stiles had asked all three of the sisters to join, but Bridgette had a date that night. Bridgette had even begged them to let her skip out on babysitting 'just this once.' Her sisters knew it wouldn't be just once. However, there wasn't really a need for all three of them all the time. Willow would have even told Laurel she could stay home if she thought she could handle Stiles alone.
⠀⠀⠀"Well, yeah, I need some kind of protection when Scott's not around," Stiles shrugged. He paused, looking thoughtful. "And when he is around, I guess. But, listen, what happens if a werewolf jumps out and tries to eat me? I have nothing to defend myself with!"
⠀⠀⠀"It would eat you," Laurel replied. She looked out of the back window, bored.
⠀⠀⠀"Rude!" Stiles exclaimed, trying to catch Laurel's eye through the rearview mirror, but she kept her eyes away from him. "Also, your powers are so cool, so any chance to see you guys in action is a plus."
⠀⠀⠀"You didn't believe me when we were dating," Willow frowned.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles being ecstatic, curious, and supportive of their magic made Willow sick to her stomach. He had never been disrespectful or outright mean when she said she was a witch. Instead, he either brushed her off or talked to her about it like he didn't believe her.
⠀⠀⠀Knowing that Stiles didn't once believe her until proven was like poison in her veins.
⠀⠀⠀"Not the—" Stiles said after a moment, taking one of his hands off the wheel and throwing it out in front of him to mimic her. "Powers! But I did believe in what you believed in."
⠀⠀⠀Willow's mouth turned metallic as she bit down on her tongue too hard. She sucked in a deep breath and rolled her eyes.
⠀⠀⠀"'You think you're a witch, right?'" she mimicked him, lowering her voice in an attempt to sound like him.
⠀⠀⠀"Willow, I didn't mean it like that," he deflated. "I was worried about Scott and needed help."
⠀⠀⠀"It's fine, Stiles," Willow muttered, brushing him off as she turned to look out of the window like her sister.
⠀⠀⠀"Is that why we broke up?" Stiles asked after a pause. "Because you thought I didn't believe that you were a witch?"
⠀⠀⠀"No."
⠀⠀⠀Stiles waited for her to continue but got nothing. Not even Laurel made a sound from the back seat to indicate if his assumption was close to the truth or not.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles sighed, running his hand over his face, then turned down Scott's street and parked in his driveway. He threw himself from the driver's seat and into Scott's house without knocking. Willow stepped out and pulled her seat forward for Laurel to get out after him.
⠀⠀⠀She and Laurel walked through the front door Stiles had darted through and left wide open. Willow leaned forward and knocked on the door frame. Scott's mom was standing by the door, staring at where Stiles had barged in.
⠀⠀⠀"Hello," Willow greeted. "Sorry for Stiles, he's—"
⠀⠀⠀"I know," Scott's mom assured them, stepping over to the door and holding her arm out for them to enter. "Come on in. I don't think we've met. I'm Melissa McCall, Scott's mom."
⠀⠀⠀"I'm Willow, and this is Laurel."
⠀⠀⠀"Oh, you two have such pretty names," Ms. McCall cooed. "And for two beautiful young women, I think it's fitting."
⠀⠀⠀Willow laughed to herself, her cheeks warming as she noticed Laurel's gaze burning a hole into the side of her head.
⠀⠀⠀"Thank you," Willow said, her tone turning giddy. "Um, you're very pretty yourself."
⠀⠀⠀"Thank you, sweetheart," Ms. McCall smiled. She took in a deep breath as she accepted the compliment with a broad smile and pointed at the stairs. "Scott's room is just up there. Follow the stench of teenage boy, and you'll find it."
⠀⠀⠀Laurel snorted, knowing the sentiment all too well from being in Stiles' car far more than she would like to.
⠀⠀⠀"Thank you," Willow smiled.
⠀⠀⠀The sisters headed up the stairs, Willow light on her feet as she hopped on her toes on the way to Scott's room. She skidded to a stop in the doorframe and smiled widely at Scott as he turned to look at her.
⠀⠀⠀"Scott, did you know your mom's hot?" Willow asked him, her smile turning into a shit-eating grin as he groaned.
⠀⠀⠀"What? Willow!" Scott exclaimed, slapping his hands over his ears in disgust.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles laughed out loud, cupping his hands over his mouth as he leaned over at the waist before perking back up.
⠀⠀⠀"Oh, buddy," Stiles said with false remorse as he patted Scott's shoulder. "Brutal, but true."
⠀⠀⠀Scott glared at the two while they high-fived. It was the nearest they had been on agreeing that wasn't life or death lately. While Willow hated that fact, she took into account Stiles was the only one backing her up on the statement.
⠀⠀⠀"Your mom might also think Willow's into her. She was a stuttering, red-faced mess down there," Laurel commented.
⠀⠀⠀Willow looked at her sister then gasped loudly. She put her hands over her mouth and turned back to Scott, who shook his head in despair.
⠀⠀⠀"Scott! What if I became your step-mom?!"
⠀⠀⠀"Stop! Please!" Scott shouted at her. He stood to his feet and dragged her into his room to sit down on his bed and hopefully calm her down. He leaned down, setting his hands tightly onto her shoulders, and looked into her eyes to keep her focus. "Listen to me, I went to Derek Hale's house earlier. There's someone buried there, so it has to be him who killed the girl in the woods. I need you, Laurel, and Stiles' help getting him caught."
⠀⠀⠀"Derek Hale?" Willow asked, furrowing her brows.
⠀⠀⠀"Yes," Scott said.
⠀⠀⠀"He murdered the girl in the woods?" Laurel asked.
⠀⠀⠀Scott turned to look at her and nodded.
⠀⠀⠀"Alright," Laurel said, jutting her head towards the hall behind her. "Let's go."
⠀⠀⠀Willow stood, brushing off her jeans, and tightened her ponytail with a slight grin on her face at the idea of seeing Ms. McCall again. She caught the look Scott gave to Stiles but didn't have time to react. Stiles wrapped his arm around her neck and led her out of the house without a second to stop.
⠀⠀⠀"Goodbye, Ms. McCall!" Willow exclaimed, waving her hand behind Stiles' back as she tried to give her a look. "You're so hot," she whisper-shouted for only her and Stiles to hear.
⠀⠀⠀"Come on," Stiles chuckled, tugging her towards his Jeep.
THE FOUR ARRIVED at Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital not long after they left Scott's house. Laurel and Scott went into the morgue to find the body while Willow and Stiles waited out in the hall for them.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles headed for the waiting room to sit. He turned the corner and stopped dead in his tracks the second he looked into the room. Willow followed behind him, looking for what he was staring at with visible panic.
⠀⠀⠀She only found Lydia.
⠀⠀⠀Lydia looked around the room, dazed and confused, as she twirled one strand of strawberry blonde hair through her finger.
⠀⠀⠀Willow's eye twitched in annoyance. She watched Stiles fall forward like he had lost all sense of himself and caught onto the reception desk. He rubbed his hand over his face out of nervousness and glanced at Lydia. After a minute, Stiles finally gathered the courage to walk over to her. He leaned against the wall above the vacant chair beside her with a grin.
⠀⠀⠀"Hey, Lydia," Stiles greeted. Willow could only see his frantic movements with his back toward her while Lydia kept her sights anywhere but him. "You probably don't remember me. Um, I sit behind you in Econ. Uh, anyway, I always thought that we just had this kind of connection. Unspoken, of course. Maybe it'd be cool to get to know each other a little better."
⠀⠀⠀Lydia smiled, and Willow felt her heart drop, thinking that Stiles had been right.
⠀⠀⠀"Hold on, give me a second," Lydia laughed under her breath. She ducked her head and pulled the Bluetooth from her ear and behind her hair.
⠀⠀⠀Willow had to force herself from laughing out loud. Stiles' shoulders dropped in disappointment, and all hope he had for a moment disappeared. Lydia glanced up at Stiles, batting her thick eyelashes at him.
⠀⠀⠀"Yeah," she sighed, pointing her finger and twirling it at him with a frown. "I didn't get any of what you just said. Is it worth repeating?"
⠀⠀⠀"No, sorry," Stiles said quickly, falling back. "I'll just sit—You don't care," he muttered.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles flopped down in the chair around the corner from her. He slammed his head back into the wall, his eyes closed for a second before they fluttered open. He stared at Willow, turning red from keeping her laughter in.
⠀⠀⠀"Shut up," Stiles groaned, waving his hand at her.
⠀⠀⠀"Sorry," Willow told him, holding her hand over her mouth in an attempt to keep her laughter contained. She moved to sit in the chair beside him and started chuckling. "But not. That was hilarious. 'Is it worth repeating?'"
⠀⠀⠀Stiles groaned, pulling the sachet out of his pocket and flipping it between his fingers.
⠀⠀⠀"I thought your sister said this stupid thing would work," he commented, glaring at the sachet like that was the problem. Not the fact that Lydia Martin would never notice anyone outside of her own mirror. "What's in it, anyway?" he breathed out.
⠀⠀⠀He began to untie the string, but Willow pressed her hand over his before he could undo it all the way.
⠀⠀⠀"If you open it, the energy releases, and the spell breaks," Willow explained. She released his hand and rested hers back to her side.
⠀⠀⠀"Are you sure she even did it right?" Stiles asked her but tied the sachet back anyways. He shoved it into his pocket and turned to her raising his eyebrows for the answer.
⠀⠀⠀"I'm sure," Willow assured him with a tight smile. "Maybe the universe just doesn't think you two are meant together."
⠀⠀⠀"Most likely," Stiles sighed, sinking into his chair and picking up a pamphlet from beside him to drop his head into. "I'm hopeless."
⠀⠀⠀In the main waiting room area, Lydia greeted her boyfriend, Jackson. He had been there since none other than Scott McCall had dislocated his shoulder. Lydia approached Jackson with a sweet smile. Her voice lingered in the air long enough for the two envious teens to turn and look at them.
⠀⠀⠀"Did he do it?" Lydia asked him.
⠀⠀⠀"He said not to make a habit of it," Jackson explained, his jaw set as he stared down his nose at her. "But one cortisone shot won't kill me."
⠀⠀⠀"You should get one right before the game, too," Lydia commented, plucking a hair off his shirt. "The pros do it all the time. You wanna be a little high school amateur, or do you want to go pro?"
⠀⠀⠀Lydia dragged herself to Jackson, pulling him into a kiss. Stiles ended up watching a little too intently. Willow watched for a moment then turned to look at Stiles. She furrowed her brows into confusion, wondering why he was torturing himself over her.
⠀⠀⠀Then, wondered why she did the same.
⠀⠀⠀Willow and Stiles didn't notice the other pair approach them until Scott had ripped the pamphlet Stiles still had covering his face away. Then, they jumped, acting as if they had been watching a porno in public together and not just a couple kissing.
⠀⠀⠀"The scent was the same," Scott told them, ignoring their jumpy behavior.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles and Willow stood at the confirmation.
⠀⠀⠀"You sure?" Stiles asked.
⠀⠀⠀"Yes."
⠀⠀⠀"So, he did bury the other half of the body on his property," Stiles added.
⠀⠀⠀"Which means we have proof he killed the girl," Scott agreed.
⠀⠀⠀"I say we use it."
⠀⠀⠀"How?"
⠀⠀⠀Stiles started walking out of the hospital with the other three trailing behind him. Then he stopped and turned to look at Scott.
⠀⠀⠀"Tell me something first," he told his best friend. "Are you doing this because you want to stop Derek or because you want to play in the game, and he said you couldn't?"
⠀⠀⠀"There are bite marks on the leg, Stiles," Scott told him. "Bite marks."
⠀⠀⠀"Okay," Stiles nodded, turning to look at Willow and Laurel. "Do you guys know any dirt-digging spells?"
⠀⠀⠀"We're not going into the woods," Laurel said.
⠀⠀⠀"What? Why not?" Stiles asked, put off by her quick response.
⠀⠀⠀"We'll be fine, Laurel," Willow tried to reassure her sister, but Laurel only grew tense and turned to glare at her.
⠀⠀⠀"Mom said not until she gets us some protection spells," Laurel argued.
⠀⠀⠀"I can shield us if I need to," Willow said.
⠀⠀⠀Laurel ground her teeth.
⠀⠀⠀"I'm not going," Laurel told her without hesitation. "If you want to go get yourself killed, that's fine with me. Just don't drag me into it."
⠀⠀⠀Willow sighed and watched as Laurel stormed out of the front door to wait by the Jeep for them.
⠀⠀⠀"Uh, you never answered my question," Stiles commented, raising his hand and smiling sheepishly at her.
⠀⠀⠀"No," Willow said. "But I do know how to reanimate a body," she explained. A wide grin spread over her face as she rolled back and forth on her heels as she watched Stiles grimace in disgust.
⠀⠀⠀"No, no, no," he exclaimed, turning towards the door and heading for the exit. "Shovels! We're getting shovels!"
